I was told before the game that we were likely to throw it 40+ times against Cal. Rationale was mainly the OL not being able to run the ball on Marshall and thinking that getting the ball out of Pyne's hands quickly was the best way to manufacture offense.

They came out and did:
-3 straight pass plays, punt
-2 pass, 1 run, punt
-2 pass, 1 run, punt
-2 pass, 1 run, punt
-2 pass, fumble from pyne

So a 79% pass rate and 5 drives that resulted in zero first downs.

I give Tommy credit for adjusting and committing to the run and calling a good game from that point onward. But he's obviously very uncomfortable without a QB that can chuck it all over the yard. He wants to call a game like the 1H of the Fiesta Bowl but that doesn't fit the personnel because he's fucked up QB recruiting/development.
We didn’t get any first downs not due to the playcalling but rather multiple easy passes thrown poorly, procedure penalties and dropped balls. The calls would have worked fine if simple things were executed. I mean very simple things hence Tommy appropriately losing his shit. Liked Tommy’s fire in that moment. That little POS Pyne could cost him his job.

Guess depends on when it happened. We came out throwing the ball and did nothing on our first 5 possessions. It wasn’t until we started running that we had success.
We didn’t do Jack shit on our first several drives largely due to bitch nerves by Pyne followed by no help from penalties and a drop by Styles. If Pyne makes easy throws and Styles makes an easy catch we get some momentum and probably get a score on one of those. Angeli should get ready because if we get down a couple of scores and Pyne starts throwing his telegraphed ints he is done. Would be happy if Pyne turns out to be the little engine that could but I fear he will be the little white belly who can’t. Still can’t get over the fact he was the only player to wear a crop top at the BG game and didn’t even tan his shaved little white jelly belly. Kid must be delusional. He does have some swagger tho, just not sure why.

Yea that Tyree Touchdown play was one of Rees's best designed plays of the year. More creativity and using all the personnel and open the passing up will get us more than 30 points a game but it all needs to be done.

I think Rees is gun shy and Freeman certainly isn't helping. I think everyone is worried about getting BLOWN OUT so that pervades the offensive side of the ball.

At the point Freeman should just tell Tommy to become a Gunslinger OC in terms of pass plays. Go for it.

Curious to see his offense against Clemson this weekend.
Clemson did a really nice job last season of containing that offense. It'll be interesting this week with all that Clemson has had going on with their defense to see how it goes this season.

Clemson absolutely crushed Sam Hartman in that game. Made his life a living hell. Sacked him 7 times. I would like to think that at ND the OL would hold up better running that scheme. Also, an underrated aspect......ND would probably be able to get a couple WR transfers in from Wake if they make that move.

I don’t know enough personally about Wake’s but it’d caution getting any hopes up on certain RPO offensive coordinators who’s systems are not friendly to TEs and/or OL development. ND Is not going to proactively turn away from their building block and one big selling point of NFL development

I posted a link somewhere breaking down his offense. It truly is beautiful
I watched it and I can't put my finger on it but it seems to be a little gimmicky. Looks like he waits to see if the LB's come up or not, which determines run or pass. If you have a good D-line, I think you could probably shut it down as you could keep your LB's back until the QB commits.

It's not Gimmicky so much as it is a true read option, slowing it down and showing the hand of the D. Does it work EVERYTIME? No of course not and it isn't meant to be an EVERY DOWN thing. If you watch that breakdown, they go over the pros/cons and how Ruggerio mixes in traditionally drop backs/hand offs ect. If Wake Forest had the talent we have, It could be really explosive.

Problem is, you need someone to teach it and teach it correctly. Tommy, may be a decent play caller, but he has yet to show he can teach / adapt. FSU runs a similar slow mesh and it was really effective at times vs LSU.

They don't have to. Like I said, it's a wrinkle that can be used and used effectively. If anything I think it would showcase the OL, being as they need to stay on their blocks longer as the play develops

But for real I would love to hear a HS coach or equivalent take the gloves off on this offense. I would trust their opinion more than coach speak.
Agree. I’m legitimately interested. I know nothing about his offense but one guy wants to give him $3 million, another thinks he’s a bum. May have to read up on it.

When do we reach the week where Blake kicks off his rust shackles? I think it’s coming just behind schedule

I expected a lot out of him early. When he came back for the Fiesta he was the highest graded lineman. Need him locked in again.

I am optimistic that the offensive line woes are communication problems. Basically, that there have been changes to how assignments are doled out which has resulted in confusion. That's the best case scenario for seeing improvement, IMO.

My opinion is that it takes extreme advantage of the 3 yard LOS rule for RPOs. Didn't say It wasn't efficient. I just hate it haha. Big difference

I think that the play calling by Tommy has been very difficult to judge based on lack of execution. Granted, execution of the play is certainly reflective of coaching but at some point, it’s squarely on the players’ shoulders. If the execution continues to trend positive then the offensive production will do the same.

I head Jamie on ISD say he thought Fisher is “thinking too much” which makes him appear slow. After all the promise from early play last year and the hype going into this year, it makes sense. Is he having trouble transitioning from Quinn to Hiestand?

Was listening to Inside ND Sports pod today and Tyler mentioned that Tommy interviewed at Miami in Jan or Feb. Is that correct? I may have misheard but I thought that Miami was interested but that Jack persuaded him to stay at ND before they announced MF as HC.

I’d be surprised if production doesn’t increase. We’re currently 115th in points scored. Pretty hard to get worse from there.
