My thing is it's not CJ's fault that Tommy (so far) has whiffed at QB in the 2023 class and foolishly put all of his eggs in the basket of someone who strung the program along for months and he shouldn't feel pressure to reclassify.
I was as critical of the staff as anybody back in March for going all in on Moore, but it's not entirely their fault they really whiffed. They were told they had their guy, thought they had it locked up, and then the goal posts kept on moving on a verbal commit. Lesson learned for Rees and Freeman I'm sure, but they still landed Carr which was a huge get and it only proved that Moore wasn't a silent commit after all.
I agree that Carr shouldn't feel pressure to reclassify, but it's honestly the best move for both himself and ND. We picked up a number of talented freshmen in the 2021 class as we saw last year. Buchner may or may not be one of those, we'll see. We've got a lot more talent coming in still. The sooner Carr can get reps, learn the offense, and establish himself as the man they think he is, the better chance Freeman has success and solidifies himself as the future of this program. If he struggles out of the gate he may not get a lot of time to right the ship given the fact he came in with no HC experience and BK left him a pretty good team to work with. For Carr he's better off coming in and getting experience with the young talent, even if Buchner ends up being the starter for a few years. If Carr doesn't come till 2024 and another QB ends up flipping and winning the job before he makes it to campus it might delay Carr's career and his Draft perspective.
