NBC pursuing B1G football… what do we think?

As long as they do as little as possible to promote it and consistently hire announcers who are tacitly antagonistic to the Big Ten. Otherwise known as the "ND Plan".

I'm over NBC's coverage. It's boring and looks like we're playing in the late 90's compared to Fox/ESPN/CBS. I think ND should consider another network.
Yeah, I can't stand ESPN at all, but making sure their bobble heads talk nice about ND would be something. Although, they'd probably put us on ESPN Albania just for spite.

It’s good if ND is not making sacrifices as a result. It’s not good if we are. I think that’s short and sweet.

If the number is as rumored and actually happens, they’ve given ND leverage in our deal because the ratings will speak for themselves on a OSU/PSU/Michigan game versus ND versus others. I’d expect B1G ends up back at Fox in the end.

I now he's an either love him or hate him dynamic and the hate him crowd will gnash their teeth all over this,... but whichever option gets Gus Johnson doing ND games is the one I want.

A ten figure bid from NBC would have made a lot more sense when NBC Sports was a going concern.

Tell me you don't watch CFB on other networks without actually telling me that.
I probably watch more CFB than 95% of ND fans. I don't watch NFL at all because I dedicate so much time on Saturdays to CFB. I genuinely enjoy watching other schools and rivalry games.

Probably why some think I have a negative view of ND/personel. I watch a lot of great teams and programs every week.

NBC is OK. Little dick energy, more of a golf setting than football so I'd be very intrigued by other options in the future.

Like Dale said if NBC pays the B1G that much, it'll help ND. Our games will rate higher than any of theirs not involving OSU or Michigan (and even many that do). We'll have leverage in the next TV contract go-round.

Also if it leads to more home-and-homes with B1G teams because NBC sees inventory synergies, I'd be for that.

Beyond that I'm not sure it makes much difference for us?

Amazon covering ND is intriguing to me. Could be a huge boost for everyone and Amazon would be able to have exclusive content for the program. Thoughts?

I think if we moved on from NBC the storyline would be this: "Ridiculous" > Gave up our exclusivity > ND is continuing to slip > Fine I'll watch > Hey this is kind of nice > These announcers are pretty intriguing > Ok, we waited too long with NBC, this is awesome.

I am a general CFB junkie as well, I watch as much football on Saturday as I can.

I personally prefer NBC's coverage over our away games being covered on the ESPN channels. I like that Tirico and Brees cover us week in and week out and have intimate knowledge of our program and its players.

I don't get the notion that NBC is anti-ND; I think years of Flutie personally being anti-ND gave a lot of our fans that interpretation. I do think Tirico does a nice job of staying unbiased in his calls, but that doesn't bother me. That's how it should be, there are still two fan bases tuning in, afterall.

I don’t think they are anti ND at all,… just that they’re overly ‘can’t show ND bias’ so they hire guys who openly root against ND. Hated Haden also personally. NBC is fine and I like it better than CBS or ESPN. I like Fox more however,… and it’s not just my Gus Johnson crush

I don't really follow... almost half of ND's games have various announcers through the season, and it's usually one of the big crews, including seeing Gus Johnson when they're playing Stanford or a B1G team, and getting Herbie and Fowler at least once and then a couple of random 'B' squad ESPN booths outside of that. Unless you mean getting intriguing home booth announcers on a different network, in which case you can't really compare to NBC until you know who they would be. It could be much better, or could be a total disaster (like hiring Flutie was). Right now I feel like it would be hard to find a booth that could beat Tirico and Brees, unless it includes Brady Quinn.

In terms of their presentation, they may be a step back from ESPN, but I think that's mainly because NBC has no reason to pump so many tie-in storylines right now. That would change if they added the B1G, and had a legit reason to do a gameday production, rather than jamming ND content into a half-hour pregame and then whatever post-game stuff is on Peacock.

Fox's game coverage is the definition of 'little dick energy,' imo. Their pregame show is alright for alternative viewing to Gameday, but the game presentations themselves always seem so low-energy. Their crowd noise sucks, their graphics could be leftovers from an NFL Thanksgiving game from 1996, and their efforts to keep pushing noon games, while valiant and provide a good option for people that watch all day, screams "we know we can't compete with ESPN, CBS or an ND night game!" Their 8pm-and-later offerings on Fox and FS1 were mostly garbage this year, outside of Baylor and Oklahoma State.

NBC is clean and high-class, which DOES fit your 'golf' analogy, but that doesn't mean it's the little guy on the block... it means its the stuffy rich guy that has a great wardrobe (the presentation and visuals are nice) but needs to modernize (upgrade the CFB-at-large tie-ins, sack up and hire Brady Quinn for the booth, etc.). NBC will never be ESPN, but it won't take much to get them in line ahead of Fox if they're willing to spend the money, and promise not to dick ND over in the process.

Tirico/ Dungy and Tirico/Brees provided excellent analysis and coverage. Aside from Herbstreit and Fowler (and even that's arguable), who's better than what NBC is offering us? I end up having to mute the TV for a lot of ESPN games because the talking heads are so bad.

The presentation and camera work are as professional as you'll find anywhere. Did you watch a single PAC-12 game last year? They look like they're being recorded on a potato.

1. My biggest gripe with NBC is their use of field/crowd mics. When you watch on some other networks it gives the feeling of being in the stadium. Otherwise I think NBC is fine. However:

2. Fox blows everyone else out of the water for CFB coverage.

I must be watching the wrong games on Fox, or else the Fox Sports app is doing something to kill the audio quality for non-booth sounds, because Fox games just seem to have zero atmosphere to me. Even with Gus on the call, it's like him and Joel are the only energy in the stadium. When Gus starts to yell during a big play, the crowd noise almost never seems to elevate at the same time like it does on other networks.

I agree... I read that I immediately went ... wut? Fox CFB is the worst of all of them. I cant watch a Fox CFB broadcast. It is so dry...

For me,… studio, pre game, personalities, and game broadcasts,… all of it…

1.) Fox
2.) NBC
3.) CBS
4.) Local Network PBS junior college broadcasts
5.) ESPN

Just my take

I think CBS in game crowds get a boost being it’s a religion to those people,… but it also gets knocked down for me for the very reason that hyping that conference is a religion to the on air commentators. Even if they’re not covering a SEC game they just can’t not spew it,… if I’m honest I wouldn’t mind seeing ND on CBS without the SEC slurpfest

The CBS jingle alone puts it up there for me. I do enjoy Gus Johnson, so no argument there on your previous posts.

Yeah that jingle is great. I watch old ND games pre NBC and get warm and fuzzy when that hits

I think a lot of people complaining about NBC would seriously miss the positives were that to change. I have had complaints in the past. (Stupid Peacock game.)

I think that the only way I want ND off of NBC (at the moment where we are the focus of the channel) is if ND just made its own network and it was affordable. I could be down for that.

To add, yeah, if a change were to happen it would be to something like a move to ESPN and with someone like a retired Pete Carroll and Shannon Sharpe doing our games every week

Hard pass. The Longhorn Network didn't quite work out how texas thought it would. Plus, I already refuse to pay for the BS peacock programming, as I'm not going to spend already more money than what we already spend a month on cable/internet/streaming services for what should already be considered, essentially, "free programming."
One of the added benefits of having games on nbc is that viewers on nbc, in general, are made aware of ND football. The esoteric "ND Football Cast" streaming buy won't attract new, indifferent, or neutral fans, as well as having the negative effect of losing current customers.
