It’s poaching season now. Axe Del after ESP and then work on flipping or going after some unsigned kids ahead of NSD later this winter. Even with the portal we need to sign three guys in this class. Maybe not elite WRs but athletes in the mold of Wilkins or Avery Davis that can develop under the tutelage of a new WR coach.

That’s been stated on various podcast. I think the shamrock and the ISD one.

I believe the caveat was the program they were transferring from. There are some academic institutions where it would not be a barrier. USC, for one. Miami. Vandy. Northwestern. Duke. Probably some others. Obviously there are very few fits, but I believe it isn’t a non-starter.

Says who?

Says Notre Dame. They don't feel that other schools' classes count, unless they've already graduated. Just another way they handcuff themselves.

Hey, maybe that's one of the reasons why Brian Kelly has been dancing lately

You’re literally just wrong. Where on earth did you read that? ND has taken undergrad transfers (see Alohi Gilman, and many others I can point to in non-football sports where such transfers are more common because scholarships are different).

The truth is this — it is very easy to transfer into ND as an undergrad who will academically be a sophomore. Just comes down to have a good enough transcript that they think you will be able to graduate.

As an academic junior, it’s harder but possible. You need to have credits that apply to a major that ND offers and puts you on track to graduate.

The only type of transfer that they will flat out not take is someone who has academically completed more than 2 years at another institution (e.g. a senior transfer) but has not earned a degree from that university.

And then grad transfers are gucci.

Amir Carlisle, and Alohi Gilman are a couple undergrad transfers I can think of off the top of my head. There has to be at least a few more in recent years

The problem is where is an undergrad transfer coming from and why would they come here?

I would assume some of them will want to leave because they want more PT, but if ND gets guys like Austin and Lenzy back, ND becomes less desirable for them, because then they're not as likely to see the field. They'd have to beat them out, as well as competing with Styles and Colzie.

So the portal doesn't seem like a viable solution to our problem. We need guys in the pipeline, who are willing to stick it out and be content with maybe a reserve role for a year and then increasing their role in year 2, but for a transfer, why wouldn't they just go somewhere where they can start day 1?

Seems like any transfer we get is probably not going to be anything more than a depth piece or a solid player who won't develop past that.

This might guarantee that Avery is back for a 6th year, just from a numbers perspective.

As far as kids who sign during ESP... they can just "transfer" as soon as they're on campus so you can flip anyone, anytime nowadays

Ughhh…hate it…but you’re right. All these rule changes turning this into nfl minor leagues risks making this sport as popular as the Railcats.

It is oddly quiet from NDs perspective right? There's no way everyone and their mom is visiting 1/4 of our commits and we're not visiting anyone else locked up elsewhere.
Shoot, at this point most of the pay sites are drumming up fake under the radar flips just to drum up clicks. How has their not been a single stealth campus visit, rumored flip candidate, or hint at a "big name making contact behind the scenes"?

The coaching transition probably delayed this due to getting people hired and then shoring up current commits

Del Alexander has single handily set this team back 2 years. The one position group Notre Dame needs to improve at to win a playoff game, they almost completely struck out at.

Del needs to get the fuck out now.

Should the staff give California recruiting the same treatment that they've given Florida? Not completely quit recruiting the state, but start using those sources elsewhere? Similar to what they've been doing in the Atlanta area and their private schools.

I think I'd rather recruit the private/Catholic schools on the East Coast than continue to get pantsed by Mater Dei.

Even if we did sign all 3 of Williams, Merriweather, & Walker - I really thought this class lacked a game breaking speed guy. The best offenses in the country, Bama & OSU, have put a focus on acquiring speed on the edges, not an army of 6'3"+ WRs that can win jump balls.

I had this realization myself watching the SEC title game. So important to have speed at WR. A single slip-up in coverage can completely change the course of a game.

Still an excellent class, reloading at the positions that have been winning us games these past 5 years (OL, TE, front 7) but missing on those positions that will push us that extra step forward (WR, elite DBs). Could be so much worse.

I am at least extremely high on Merriweather's future. He's got speed and outstanding feet for a guy his size. It looks like he hasn't yet learned how to use his size to bully defenders or expand his catch radius but that's something you can actually teach.

meh i'd rather the staff didn't reach for a dude, just go and focus on the 2023 class now (fire Del tho) and then keep an eye out for grad transfer WR's

I think he'll ultimately be the best of the 3. Lot of upside there.

QB
RS SO 4* Drew Pyne
SO 4* Tyler Buchner
RS FR 3* Ronnie Powlus III
FR 4* Steve Angeli

Think the 2022 class was solid with Angeli coming in. Leaves a ton of pressure to get a really good dude in the 2023 class but Angeli is a safe, solid choice for ND. I think unless there's a QB that blows them away in the portal they'll ride with Buchner and have Pyne there in case he struggles. Not a huge fan of the QB situation because so much of it hinges on Buchner making a huge jump and I think that'll be tough for the game in Columbus, Ohio

FR 4* Jadarian Price

Love the Price pickup. Would've loved a 2nd back in this class cause if anything happens to the group it gets real thin real fast, but I love the talent of the 4 dudes. I really hope 2023 is a 2 back class and I think Irvin is a nice start at RB!
