I saw that Brady Quinn said he heard it had a little bit to do with not getting the things he asked for. So either Jack isn't telling the truth or this is an excuse for Kelly.

As the details come out on the contract, this wasn't about money. ND actually does pay its coaches competitively. But they also make their job way more difficult than it needs to be. Kelly left because he wanted:
1. psych/mental performance staff expansion
2. a power 5 level athletic complex with the appropriate space, staffing, and amenities, and
3. private transportation for coaches visiting recruits.
The admin called his bluff and he said seeya. Any legit coach is going to demand these same things. So ND has to give in, or get a not legit coach.
Wouldn't be the first time you've made a bad jump. Still got your Manziel jersey?![]()
This is probably a crazy thought to have, but is there any chance that their was a small amount of selfless “take one for the team” mentality with Kelly calling their bluff? I can’t shake the thought that he knows the things we need to change in order to make it over the hump and him drawing a line in the sand and leaving when they won’t commit to those changes is his way of saying wake up and enter the 21st century folks…
I honestly think Kelly thought they would do it if he held their feet to the fire. Does a 60 year old from Boston who has ND on auto pilot really want to go to Baton Rouge, rebuild a culture and program, and play Saban every year? Oh and the fanbase is already doubting you. I think he wanted to win a title at ND and he believed he could not do it without these upgrades (which would allow him to get better players, and also develop them better).
The real question is what to do change your name to now????

For 4 straight 10 win seasons prior to 2021, Kelly should have been handed anything he wanted. It's like the Administration forgets what a shit show 1996-2016 was.

A lot of them haven't "forgotten" insomuch as they just actively don't like the football program and don't pay attention even when we're doing well.
You guys surely remember my rants about how we hire professors that actively hate the Church and end up undermining the school's mission from within. This is similar in that, if you don't understand the role that NDFB has played in putting the University on the map, then you clearly don't understand ND and probably don't belong in administration.
I'm totally prepared to lose Freeman now,... it brings clarity to the presser this morning. Swarbrick prob knew enough to feel he could not retain Freeman. If you view the presser from that angle it makes much more sense. This will be a complete coaching overhaul and it will take time. sucks it had to happen this year with this class but yeah,.. that's totally my expectation as of the time of this post.
It just wouldn't make sense...taking a coordinator job ANYWHERE (including the NFL) is not as good as the Notre Dame head coaching job.
Unless ND only wants him as a coordinator?
It’s being reported now that he initially turned down LSU 5 days ago, then they lost out on Lincoln Riley because Riley didn’t want to coach in the SEC, and then they came back to Kelly with more money and a bigger contract.
Seems like there is a window there where Swarbrick likely misplayed this badly and we may never get confirmation on what exactly transpired between him and Kelly. But it is also less surprising to me — if that’s the case — that Kelly is trying to burn it all down on his way out of the door.

FWIW I know Brady Quinn and some other media peeps said facility upgrades were a sticking point for Kelly leaving, but among recent and current players that seems to be a non-factor for many. Most realize there are programs with a few more amenities, but at the end of the day they asked, "What more do we really need? What needs to be done?" There were some small things they would have liked to have, but they're not living in the Dark Ages.
I think Eli said something similar when it came to current recruits. If you're coming to ND it's likely for the culture, the academics, etc. Facilities are least of your concerns. He said most of them were committed to the school, not the coach, which was good to hear.
If it wasn’t about the money how much else is under Swarbrick’s purview? Gug upgrades? Mental health staff? A private jet?
If I understood what I heard correctly, Kelly himself paid for the mental performance coach because ND would not.
