I guess that's possible but refusing to commit to someone as an interim coach is simply bizarre, especially since he said he saw it coming or something along those lines. If you don't see a clear interim coach on your staff, even though you see the potential of your coach bolting, it suggests you do not see a permanent coach either.That, or you're completely incompetent.

I think we all agree that we’re about to take the next step. Whether that’s a step forward or a step off a cliff, into a pit of vipers, etc remains to be seen…

I don't have a problem with him not announcing a Interim Head Coach. He doesn't know who is staying. What if he announced Tommy at interim Head coach and at 2pm Tommy announces he's going with Kelly to LSU? I mean, He'd look like a complete moron.

Let the dust settle. No decision needs to be made right now. We've got a few days.

No press conference would have been much better than this conference. Maybe behind the scenes he is negotiating with Freeman or even has an offer out to Fickell, but you wouldn’t know that base don’t what he said. He definitely shouldn’t have said anything about players not picking the coach. While true, it doesn’t give players or recruits any confidence that Jack has their back. ESD is right around the corner and these kids need some reassurance. Like I said maybe he’s on top of it behind the scenes but you’d never know that from the PC.

that's exactly what i said. Jack's not dumb. He's got this, we might not like what he says but I'm confident it will be done 'right'

he'll narrow down 2-3 candidates today.

That's fine. I think the issue here is how clueless he looked giving his answer. I'm paraphrasing here but "our staff (half of which is being poached by my former coach) is so good I dont need a head coach. We'll figure it out if we make the playoffs" has to be the most ridiculous answer I've heard to any question in a while.

Simply say we have not made a decision yet. This happened late last night and we will meet today to discuss. That's all.

Exactly. It was some Ted Lasso Episode 1 shit. He looked completely out of his depth while trying to say everything will be just dandy.

Not a great press conference but I think the sentiment is right overall, what I would want to portray first is gratitude and demonstrate that the University was loyal to the previous coach (cough reboot cough). Second I would want to make clear that Greedo shot first, but now we are open for business so we won't be playing footsies, interested parties for any positions that might be open or opening shortly better get a cover letter and resume in to the office ASAP. Third, be noncommittal to give yourself outs, this press conference is to engage the media, give the players some props, and post a job opening. It was never going to be fan service. I bet we have another press conference by next Tuesday with actual fireworks instead of teeth gnashing and what not.

Maybe I'm being overly critical but he was so unaware and the whole presentation struck me as low rent. Really surprised by it b/c my impression of JS was the complete opposite of unaware and low rent.

Did Brian Kelly really begin recruiting Freeman to LSU before breaking the news to Swarbrick? Is this really how cutthroat college football is? Sounds like Kelly no longer gives a f*ck about consistency in his message.

I didn't think I'd start disliking him this quickly.

As this continues to play out, I'm of the opinion that it makes sense to accept this for what it is (a complete re-boot) and hire a guy like Rhule who will come with his own rolodex of assistants. The biggest mistake USC made was to try and recycle old Pete Carroll assistants and trying to rekindle the magic.

Time to find the next coach that will last for the next 12 years and hopefully break Kelly's record for all time wins.
