Was looking at 247's Class Rankings for '22:

ND is #3 w/ 18 commits.

Clemson is all the way down at #28 w/ only 8 commits. What's up with that??

Can't say I've followed it all that closely but I do know that they don't recruit the same numbers the other football factories do so maybe this will be a down year numbers wise. That might be impacting early decisions on who to take. But they only took 19 last year so we'll see. Just spitballing there.

I know that they are in on a couple DB's that are inside the top 50 in Lukus and Everette. Lukus seems highly likely and they already have Toriano Pride. They're in on 6 or 7 top 100 DL. I would assume they get 1 or 2 of those guys. But, yea just by looking at their offers out and who is undecided, it does look like it's either a very small class or they'll have to hit on a high percentage of outstanding offers.

Here's a brief update from Anna Hickey on some names to track.

Musings: Everette decision forthcoming, DE recruiting (247sports.com)

Didn't they just come up second to bama on a DL?

They did. Jeremiah Alexander. But they already have Jihaad Campbell and are still recruiting Cyrus Moss, Kenyatta Jackson, and our old friend DJ Wesolak. Though Jackson seems unlikely at this point.

Clemson and Bama get a lot of All Star Game commits so their numbers roll in late.

Hickey has them taking approx 20 guys this cycle. That's a pretty small class compared with traditional top 5 classes. In fact, since the 2015 class it's only happend 4 times that a team with 20 or fewer made the top 5 in team rankings. Just incredibly difficult to do and if I had to bet, Clemson doesn't get that done this year. Especially considering 1 will be a Kicker. Or is expected to be a kicker.

Their APR will be Top 5, and we know that's what matters.

Yea, I wasn't trying to imply that Clemson was slipping or anything of the like. Just that Clemson isn't a lock to make the top 5 recruiting rankings because they don't annually hit the same numbers the other football factories do.

Anybody else notice that Indiana has the 24th ranked class, basically tied with USC and Clemson?

Good for them.

McCullough being Top 50 committed cause his Pops helps lol.

These rankings aren’t really for comparison standpoint at this point due to most being simply about volume differential.

Missouri and Rutgers have the two most impressive classes to date as far as outkick your coverage IMO.

Doesn't really matter how they got him, or his brother for that matter. Still counts towards the class.

They are at a level they haven't been for a while, maybe ever, and may have the second best coach in the big ten. Just landed an o lineman from Austin and a top level WR. It's impressive.

Still need to stop by the ATM before hitting the recruit trail?

They just landed 4 star OG DJ moore. Their class is up to 21st now

The formal On3 Top 32 recruit list for 2021 was released (which are essentially “5 Star” players) and Alabama and OSU account for 14 of them…….ND did have 2 (tied with USC and OU, UGA had 3) which is decent but it just further hammers home the recruiting discrepancies across CFB. I know this isn’t anything we didn’t already know but thought it was worth pointing out.

UNC just landed Travis Shaw, the #4 overall player and #2 DL in the 2022 class.

UNC could be a problem if they nail whoever follows Mack Brown, will be interesting to see how that job is viewed when it comes. Mack has now landed a 5 star DEFENSIVE prospect the last 3 years for UNC

A rare non definitive announcement. 5 star East STL WR Luther Burden, former OU commit, announcing later today. Fong has a low confidence to Georgia and Trieu has a medium confidence to Mizzou but both are older, nothing fresh right before announcement (yet)

It was indeed Mizzou for Burden in a stunner. 5 star WR one time OU commit and Georgia hard after chooses Mizzou who could not be having a worse year lol. Drinwitz has the personality but would love to know the size of the $ bag he has to somehow have Burden (#6 overall), Horn (QB, #102 overall) and the other top 250 guys they’ve got committed. Only Bama, Georgia, LSU and A&M have better classes in the SEC at the moment.

There's an incredible article in The Athletic right now called "Recruiting Confidential." Everything there is paywalled, and don't know how to link it from my app, but I encourage anyone who is a subscriber to read it. It's anonymous opinions from 8 ACC, 6 Pac-12, 5 Big Ten, and 5 SEC coaches and some people from smaller conferences too.

A few things that are ND specific and stood out -

Jaylen Sneed and CJ Williams mentioned by coaches as some of the "best" players in the country.

Jayden Bellamy mentioned by coaches as one of the "most underrated" players in the country.

An ACC coach mentioning that he doesn't know who at Notre Dame is a "great recruiter" or how they recruit but that they're impressed by the job that they do and are tough to beat.

Non-ND specific -

A Big Ten coach going on a rant about SEC schools and cheating. Also said some ACC schools cheat too "and we all know who they are" (*cough* Clemson, UNC *cough*).

Multiple coaches basically saying that the SEC is playing a completely different sport right now with regard to cheating as well as their overall ability to attract talent, and how annoying it is for crap programs in the SEC to puff out their chests about being in the SEC even though they suck. It is very clear from reading the article that everyone in the country hates the SEC but also thinks they're on their way to basically having a monopoly on college football.

No mention of Ohio St. cheating along the lines of the SEC and Clemson?

If the SEC gets that monopoly on the best talent on CFB because they are playing by a different set of rules and are basically the NFL's minor league, couldn't all the non-SEC programs form their own league and still be sustainable and attractive for viewers? If this were to happen, the SEC would be a league of 20 or less programs that play each other over and over. I don't think I would find that nearly as entertaining compared to what have now and probably wouldn't watch it if ND wasn't involved.

From that article. I love this coach whomever he is.

Pac-12 coach: Pushing the conference more than the school. That bothers the shit out of me, too. “We’re beating our chest, yeah, we’re Mississippi State.” Yeah, you’re average as fuck. You’re gonna beat the SEC chest.

A couple of points on this I find comical.....

Obviously, he has some animosity/jealousy toward that former Pac 12 coach who jumped ship to the SEC. Guessing the coach would do the same if he has the chance.

Secondly, what he accuses the SEC of doing the Pac 12 and Power 5 conferences do the same while recruiting against the Mountain West or MAC. Come play in the Pac 12 rather than play at Boise and in that conference. A kid who goes to Boise has a better chance of making the playoffs or a New Year's bowl than if he chooses Washington State. As far as NFL aspirations, if you are good enough you will make it to the league regardless of the school.

So looking at the 2023 player ranking - Oklahoma already has commits from SIX Top 50 players and is the favorite for 2 other 5 stars, including the #1 player in the country. 5 of their commits are from CA and Florida.

Am I crazy or is this an Ole Miss getting Nkemdiche, Treadwell, Conner, and Tunsil level of obvious paying players???

Eh…not sure it’s that cut and dry. Depending on who the players are there is an easy product to sell. Place just produces on offense and has the Heisman winners to prove it. If I was a player who wanted to put up numbers I would definitely give them the time of day. Ole Miss went from being the ugly chic to the Prom Queen in a day.

Oklahoma getting several elite recruits is not really surprising to me. They're a blueblood program who has been in the playoffs or on the cusp most years, and they've produced a couple of Heisman winners recently. Seeing multiple 5-stars go there doesn't raise eyebrows. Ole Miss, OTOH, had no elite program history, was certainly no pipeline to the NFL, wasn't known as a destination spot for talent, and yet was completely locking down the state's talent, even with recruiting juggernauts LSU and Bama on either side of them. Everything about them getting Nkemdiche, Tunsil, and the rest screamed cheating.
