Don't most players go home for the by week then come back and prep like a normal game?

If its mid semester break they give them some time off, practice Monday-Weds then go home. If the scholl break isn't in the same week as the bye no such luck.

Was not able to see game, but great to wake up to find Irish in the Win column.
Kudos to JD for the winning kick.
Surprised to see no Pyne, but end result W is what matters.
Was Tyree injured?
Will Mayer be back for SC?
Great time for a bye.
Irish have good chance to win out.

Tyree has a turf toe injury.
Mayer was pretty close to being able to go tonight. Should be ready with two more weeks of rest.

My thoughts:
Positives
1. The Team- That was one of the more bizarre games I have ever watched. I’m impressed they found a way to win.
2. Kyren- I think he’ll go down as my favorite Irish player. For the past two season he’s given maximum effort on every single play. He plays with passion. He wants to win. I’ll be sad to see him leave after this year.
3. Logan Diggs- Throw into the fire in the second half and he did well. We’ve got talent in the RB room.
4. O-line- Looked functional in the second half. We may have found something with Alt and Kristofic.
5. Second Quarter Buchner- came in and gave us the spark we needed. He looked really calm, poised and collected.
6. 4th Quarter Coan- That was some guts to come in and lead us to two scoring drives after getting benched.
7. D-line- This unit continues to be the strength of the team. Without them this would be an atrocious season.
8. Drew White- Best game of the season. Played with purpose, confidence, and intensity.

Negatives-
1. The refs- Worst performance I’ve seen from an officiating crew. They were looking to give us penalties any chance they could while completely ignoring holding and personal foul calls. That was awful.
2. The coaching staff- They have royally screwed this season. We have no identity. We haven’t been able to block. We play half the game as robots. Timing on our pass plays have been off all season because we can’t pick a QB and stay with them. BK was adamant we’d play one QB this game and yet here we are having played two QB’s in another game. We have deficiencies in our blocking yet we never seem to run plays that would off set those deficiencies (like quick screens, slants, etc.). The past two games Freeman has been out-coached. Theyve found holes in his system but he hasn’t adjusted. We run all out blitzes without press coverage so the QB can throw quick 5-10 yard out or curl routes. He continues to drop Foskey into coverage when he’s out best pass rusher. This is the worst coaching performance since 2016. It shows the talent we have on the team to still be 5-1. This is a talented team. They haven’t been coached properly.
3. 1st Quarter Coan/3rd Quarter Buchner- Just bad football all around.
4. CB’s/Buck/Rover- Just too many mistakes. Too many missed tackles. They look tired.

1. Alt + Kristofic the rest of the year.
2. Need to go up tempo with Coan or not play him at all.
3. Buchner should play if healthy in order to build for the future.
4. I love the way the team supports each other and keeps battling even though this is by far the worst team we’ve had in a very long time.

A rebuilding team with a ton of warts is 5-1. I know I’m supposed to want to watch Buchner develop but there were some painful moments out there. This team has the ability to run the table for a NY 6 bowl game. I just don’t see how you sacrifice that cash to play in a lower bowl with the QB round table. Says a lot about the talent on the field that they’re winning games.

Ona more positive note, this comeback should put Jack Coan from lawn guyland back in Heisman contention.

Buchner showed a lot of poise coming in that 2nd quarter to lead the offense to the lead. The kid is still raw. I knew interceptions were inevitable the way he struggled w/ short passes or inaccuracy over the middle. They came in the 3rd and worse it was a pick six but that’s to be expected of a rookie w/ minimal QB experience. Let’s hope two weeks of substantial reps gets him a package where he can make down field passes & high percentage short passes to offset his running.

This team isn’t worse than 2016. That’s only five years ago.

If anything I’d say this shows the strides we’ve made as a program that we’re as bad as we are and are still 5-1.

I'll keep saying this but fans really, really underestimate how resilient this team is. The camaraderie in the locker room is a strength of this team.

I treat years as a ND fan as similar to those of dogs. Instead of it being 7 dog years to 1 it’s more like 20 years to 1. Lol

1. Buchner rushes his short throws and needs to read before he throws. Lack of practice reps is obvious, but he’s going to be dangerous once he gets experience.

2. imagine if Austin was consistent.

3. I have no idea what Freeman is thinking and I’m not sure he does either. Great calls one series and mind numbing the next. Are they spending too much time on schemes and not enough on basics like tackling?

4. O-line played much better. Lots of room for improvement, but this was much better in run and pass pro.

5. The attitude of the team is great. Regardless of the refs, they keep banging away until the clock reads 0:00.

6. I imagine Coan will continue to start and TB will get Pyne’s reps.

A lot of promising things from Tyler, but some clear freshman mistakes. Honestly, I'll take them because he should only get better with time. Coan really does just create drive killing plays for us with his bad pocket awareness. The play where he stepped up into a sack when he had a perfectly clean pocket is what I'm talking about. And his inability to ever really pull it on the reads does not help our run game. I prefer either Pyne or Tyler; we just need to pick one and prepare them to be the starter.

Defense played well, but they were a bit sloppy. I do not think we expected to see the back up quarterback run package. To my knowledge, that's the first that kid has played all year so they were definitely bringing some new wrinkles for this game. Defense played well enough to win. Playing a lot of man makes you look silly when the quarterback gets out of the pocket because your team is scattered all over the field and no one is in a position to tackle the scramble.

I will say Jack seems to play better late in the game and I cannot explain it other than maybe he comes into games with jitters and has to settle down over the course of the game. We could definitely see a role like Tommy had with Everett in 2012.

OL looked better this game. (Funny what having a run game can do for you.) Odd to think that we are sitting at 5-1 and have a chance to look like a much better team by the end of the season if we let these young guys continue to play and improve.

They have a strong brotherhood. When TB over threw KW on the screen pass and was hit pretty good KW was right there to him and you could see them talking as they went off the field.

I can’t wait to see the game slow down for Buchner. His running threat(animal out there) will cause havoc and open opportunities downfield. Hopefully spastic to composes happens sooner than later. The team chemistry is strong, though, and guys pull for one another. I bash Kelly a lot, however, he has guys believing in one another and having each other’s backs.

4 OL starters besides LG took all 73 snap. Correll took 11 before Kristofic 62. The 4 OL starters besides LG all had GOOD run blocking grades, led by JP. Alt, Madden, and Kristofic middle of the pack pass block grades, Lugg and Patterson good. 1 sack allowed by Alt, 1 pressure allowed each by Patterson and Kristofic.

I think I posted this earlier about Coan. When the offense is in uptempo/2 minute drill offense he is so good and so sharp. Lead the team down the field for the TD and game winning FG with ease.

Tyler shows promise but is still raw. He keeps throwing his body around he won’t last long. Coan has Rees Syndrome. Just like Tommy he thinks too much. He needs to be more instinctual. In the hurry up, he becomes more instinctual and is a better version of himself. Austin is beginning to show his potential. Will be great when he and the baby gronk are on the field. Kyren makes those around him better. He is so much more than a tailback. VT special teams > our special teams.

OL gave up 2 sacks early, 1 coan walked into, and then played great the rest of the game.

Coan is Rees, he's a statue but when it comes down to the wire he makes the right decisions to win the game.

Kyren was amazing.
What happened to Tyree?
Austin came in clutch

Defense was a little shakey, but I think VT was just making great plays

Bracy made them pay for picking on him all game.

This was the game everyone said we would lose at the beginning of the season. I don't care how they did it, they got the W in a hostile, roller-coaster, emotional game. I'm proud of them.

The officials missed blatant face masks on both the Austin conversion and the Kyren targeting play. Idk if the league office will come down on them since it was just Notre Dame but they had an awful day

Wonder if the officiating being worse is in response to Hamilton’s quote on the podcast. Overall, ever since the ACC officiating crew has been running the show it’s been all bad. Last year officiating wasn’t as bad. Was that coincidence ND was a member of the ACC. Probably not. Hard not to be biased when the conference is signing your checks I would suppose.

Postgame Thoughts:
1) Austin had the play of the game, bad throw by Coan, and Austin makes a heck of a catch.
2) The QB rollercoaster ride will be all year, I think the rest of the way we play with 2 QB's every game.
3) I am still not sold on Buchner yet- he is getting the experience, he has other skills that Coan doesn't have, his ceiling is high, but I am still searching for that IT factor with him.
4) Coan to the rescue...I'll say it again COAN TO THE RESCUE. I don't think ND scores if Buchner is playing in that last possession. Give me experience (Coan) vs. trial & error (Buchner) in that situation. Play up tempo with Coan and don't let your F'ing foot off the gas pedal. It gives our o-line enough time to block and Coan makes accurate throws.
5) If Tyree cannot go against USC I like the 1-2 punch of Williams and Diggs.
6) Why no Pyne? Seems like the board is in favor of Pyne over Buchner, if you saw the posts or was at last week's game the crowd cheered when Pyne came in and booed when Buchner came in. Right now I am in favor of Pyne over Buchner.
7) Besides Hamilton on defense, overall our defense is getting there. I am pleased with Freeman, my biggest takeaway is being the DC for Notre Dame vs. Cincinnati. ND is a different overall animal of a job than Cincy.

We are winning, this team could've lost this game, we could be 3-3 right now. We are 5-1. A well deserved bye week next week is needed.

Go Irish!

One thing I'd like to see more of if we continue to start coan is to defer at the coin toss. we are slow starters and all it does is kill us in field position and basically losing a possession to start the game.. Start deferring and allowing the offense to settle in and the put more pressure on the defense to get some stops early which is more likely than letting the offense get out to a fast start.

Was surprised to see how good the defenses we've faced thus far are rated. Surely made our inevitable growing pains seem much worse than they are. The offense should really come together over the second half of the season against much weaker defenses after some badly needed rest.
