Singer said Rees has talked to him in depth about working out of the slot a la Keenan Allen (looks like about 50% of the time from quick Google)

Empty backfield with Buchner. TE attached. Colzie & Styles split wide. Williams & Mayer in the slot.

Is there any chance that once we get CJ that ND will be able to form an inside pipeline in Mater Dei?

I'm skeptical of California, but if there's a school that'd be nice to poach from...

The expectation is that is a Top 4 or so not commitment from recent stuff

This might be an unpopular opinion but I generally assume that California skill position players are significantly worse than their rankings. This is largely rooted in the number of busts that end up at USC, and how ND historically has not had a high hit rate in that state.

It’s hard to know what to think of Williams because he was not the “go to” WR as a sophomore and then as a junior they played a truncated season where they didn’t throw the ball that much. He plays against as high of a level of competition as you can, but most of his lofty projection seems to be based on 1) physical traits 2) polish. He doesn’t have jaw dropping highlights where he is breaking ankles and making circus grabs or putting the team in his back because he simply hasn’t been asked to do that Herculean shit.

No matter which school he picks, to me he’s going to be one of the most interesting player to watch as a senior.

I'm not so sure I agree with that.

USC often racks up on California talent, and often times, that talent can be overrated. However, I don't think that's the case at receiver.

For example, USC in 2019 had a receiving corp of Michael Pittman, Tyler Vaughns and Amon Ra St. Brown. All highly rated receivers, all out of California.

All of them were studs. Hell, Drake London looks to be another stud in the making for them, also from California.

Go back even further, with guys like Deontay Burnett, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Adoree Jackson.

I'm generally okay with taking skill players from places like Mater Dei. They're all really well coached and play extremely tough competition against other fast, athletic defensive backs.

Man, talk about a massive buzzkill.

We REALLY need some good news on the receiver front. I'm firmly confident we land him eventually, but it'd be nice to have him officially in the fold to make everyone feel better about the position.

It’s in line with the recent reporting on Williams including his own comments so not sure about buzzkill

If you think of the buzz being from Vernon's commitment this week then all these little offensive paper cuts could be thought of that way.

Biggins said he’ll likely toss in a ND CB soon

Biggins has been quietly bullish on our chances with Merriweather and Williams from the beginning, even before some of the ND guys were.

Also he announced the the Top 5 everyone was expecting

Biggins intel being driven by Huffman on this one. Huffman's been ND vs Stanford forever and I think the Tree love was more based on TM's RKG-ness than any real threat Stanford poses.

They're two peas in a pod when it comes to prospects during camp/7v7 season cuz they are together 3 weekends a month looking at the same players

I really like Rees’s vision of him in the slot and comparison to Keenan Allen. Allen wasn’t a burner either with a 4.7 40 out of college. Elite route runner with dynamite hands. That’s a great model for CJ.

Would be a phenomenal WR haul if we land him and Merriweather. Probably pretty easy to sell PT to guys in this cycle with our mess of a depth chart rn.

Getting an elite slot receiver in the fold will lead to some hard decisions with our TE depth and Kelly's penchant for 12 personnel.

Things appear to be headed in ND's direction to land Williams, I thought I saw a new crystal ball for Merriweather on 247 yesterday as well. Landing these 2 would be huge for ND.

Yea, captured that in his thread. Washington 247 guy put it in for ND. That doesn't stink.

Do we have a more defined date other than end of summer? I'm assuming before his season starts. There first game is 8/27

Rees knows his speed is fine for slot where it's more about your ability to get separation with your cuts and avoiding traffic.

Isn't it implied that our penchant for 12 personnel is based on the lack of skill at the WR position? With last year's haul and POTENTIALLY this year's haul, stands to reason it would behoove the staff to put more skill on the field rather than less, no?

Id like to have the abilities to take advantage of what defenses are showing us rather than have them decide how to match up. Listening to Saban talk about how he handled NDS jumbo package basically came off like … we put in guys that could match up and those aren’t always the guys to play every down or in every game. Basically if the game is calling for a vertical open air attack you need the guys on your roster to do so and if it’s a ground and pound in a hurricane you need those guys too
