Brey told 247 sports yesterday he is looking for a "defensive" coach. Bout time Mike.

Step in the right direction tho. Scott martin apparently goes back to Video Guy or whatever he was before they had to can Ayers;.

Was that from the article Prister had yesterday? I have that saved to read but haven't gotten to it yet.

Looks like Anthony Solomon is coming back to ND as an associate head coach. He was a huge huge part in the back to back elite eight runs. This is a massive pickup by brey

He was at Dayton as an associate HC correct? Very good to have him back in the fold.

Is this going to be Brey heir apparent? I was thinking about this the other day. It seems like it's a forgone conclusion this is Brey's last year. He wants to coach these Seniors through the program and probably thinks he's got a really good squad. But, they should probably have someone in mind or in place for continuity sake. Could this be that?

Eh, depending on how next year goes I'm not sure continuity is what will be needed. Solomon was huge in the success 5 years ago and if he can help right the ship next season then sure he'd be a candidate worth looking in to. If 2021-22 follows the recent trend it might be time for a complete change of regime.

Wouldn't it be a fairly surprising move if he was making this change to come back if it was only for 1 season? Seems like there must be a conversation that was had, that would assure he wasn't looking for another job after this coming season, right?

Better news than I expected to walk in to as I entered this thread with great trepidation.

Shot at an ACC head coaching gig if you bring this back to remotely respectable? Seems like a one year gamble worth taking for a mid-major assistant to the head coach. Shows an entirely predictable lack of inspiration on Brey's part to run back to the last thing that worked.

Pretty freaking awesome but this might make getting him to replace Brey a little difficult. [TWEET]https://twitter.com/markskoljr_WNDU/status/1394692203298099203?s=19[/TWEET]

As anticipated. Coach in waiting, IMO.

That’s kind of what I was thinking as well. I figured it’d be kind of weird for him to come back just for the staff to be turned over and him hopefully stay on or have to leave.

We should aim higher, look at his record as a head coach. But if this is what it takes to get Brey to exit I'm all for it.

On recruiting there's a free story on 247 today with Donovan Clingan going over his top eight. I don't getting any warm fuzzies reading this. Sounds mor enthusiastic about Georgetown, Michigan and Syracuse who have some cred in recruiting big men. UConn is the "home" team so they are in it too

Brey’s last Hurrah

Should be Brey’s deepest team ever.

They’ll still need to convince us that they are capable of competing in the ACC

I'm not sure I'm sold on that; after getting pantsed by UNC in the ACC tourney, only to see them get destroyed in the national tourney, was really off-putting to me. This upcoming senior class, supposedly his best recruiting class ever, just hasn't gotten the ball rolling.

And it's hard to say this squad is deeper than those back to back Elite 8 squads in '15 and '16.

I've been a fan of Brey's for a long, long time but I'm ready for a change of scenery. I thought last year was full-on "prove it" mode and was sorely disappointed.

I don't know if that's the best measure of potential future success. That UNC team was Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde themselves. They had some games last year where they looked like a legitimate ACC contender and then they had games where they just crapped the bed. Hence, Roy retiring. They were hot in the ACC tourney. Also beat VT and probably should've beat FSU. And then they fell flat on their face against Wisconsin.

That's fair, Lucci. I think we all had really high hopes for his 2018 recruiting haul, I know I did. And this isn't a knock on any of the kids, individually they all have some remarkable talents on the court. It just hasn't clicked as a core unit. And TBF, poor Carmody can't stay healthy and we all know he has the potential to be a difference maker if he was.

Maybe he proves me wrong and we make a run, we certainly have plenty of experience across the board.

This senior class that came in highly rated is very underrated. Hubb, Laz, and Goodwin are like a light switch- on/off, off/on. Can we count on Carmody with his health? I hope Solomon lights a fire under all of these seniors.

Does Wyche know that Brey doesn't believe in defense? Is this another case where the ND HC took a hard look at his program and realized he better make some changes?

What does that mean? More than 10 scholarships? Playing 7 people 5 minutes or more? Or is it a nice way of saying we have no go-to talent.

And what happens if Solomon brings us back to respectable play and Brey decides to ride out his contract? I don't see that as a one year heir apparent move - why would Brey duck out? He didn't the last four years so why would he now?

Looking at the roster I would like to see Hubb/Wertz/Goodwin/Laz/Atkinson with a healthy dose of Carmody and Konieczny as the standard Brey 6 deep plus one more b/c the 6 deep isn't good enough to play 40 minutes each. Maybe we get three of them to develop in to studs over the course of the season and make a run, could see Laz blossom with a better, mobile low post friend like Atkinson on boards. Atkinson could be real deal. Wertz could blossom and make Hubb better by taking a more PG by committee approach. Just sad that 2 of my 3 top picks to step up are Wertz and Atkinson when that senior class was supposed to be so stacked.

Reality is, Ryan will hog minutes and suck thus preventing JR or Robby to find their legs, Zona will have to play meaningful minutes down low b/c there is nobody else and Laz/Atkinson can't do it alone in the ACC, JR will not be allowed that much opportunity to grow b/c he is a freshman and they won't have Wertz take the ball out of Hubb's hands at all. Brey will live or die at the hands of Hubb/Laz/Goodwin and for some ungodly reason Ryan.

All that said - I think they have the chops to make the NCAAs as one of the last ACC teams in.

Its already clear that we're not buying him out and he's not quitting. Things might change and the buy out probably goes down each year but I'm pretty pessimistic about ditching Brey before the contracts over (in 2024?).

The revised coaching staff should help a little. Its still going to be Brey Ball tho, so Louisville will get 20 offensive rebounds and beat us while shooting 25%
