Its already clear that we're not buying him out and he's not quitting. Things might change and the buy out probably goes down each year but I'm pretty pessimistic about ditching Brey before the contracts over (in 2024?).

The revised coaching staff should help a little. Its still going to be Brey Ball tho, so Louisville will get 20 offensive rebounds and beat us while shooting 25%

This is my expectation which is 100% based in reality. ND won't be committed to fixing the problem until the price goes down. My fear is Brey cobbles together a good year or two and gets an extension.

And LOL to the Whiskey flyby.

Good stuff in there. Whether he was told to make some changes or did it on his own, it seems like Brey is reenergized.

"Reenergized?"

What year was he hired?

What has he done?..

The idea that he deserves kudos because he suddenly "discovered" Defense, well, that is a celebration to which, to quote Samuel Goldwyn "Include me out."

Since Brey got in the following schools have been to the Final Four

Indiana
Butler TWICE
VCU
Wichita State
Loyola.
But I believe I have found the rat. It is Mike Coffey at another website.

He was writing a book about ND basketball and needed to suck up to Brey to get access, and threw Brian Kelly under the bus.

When Brey's last contract was up they should have flogged him rather than extending his term..

I’m not sure Brey is the right coach (he has shown a slide without certain recent rehires). However, considering the more recent reinvention of a certain head football coach, I’d say he has a little time to figure it out. Was he told to make a change, probably so. Basketball isn’t too much different than football when trying to bring in elite talent at ND, and it’s probably more difficult given the size of classes. Brian Kelly finally deciding to place more emphasis on recruiting after ten years was highly frustrating (this being years after a major beating in the 2012 Championship game). Can Brey do it within a likely predetermined time frame? Time will tell. I’m gonna quote many people and posters, Is there anyone ND could get that could do better? At this point the sky is the limit, they really have nothing to lose.

Nice. Maybe Maui Brey is exactly what this team needs to get back on track.

In the few clips I've seen on social media from summer ball, I get the sense Atkinson is going to be an absolute force for us this year.

Hopefully he can be a double-double machine like John Mooney was. Looking forward to watching him.

I think they'll finish 8th in the ACC and do enough to go dancing.

Few days late on this, but I'm actually excited for the basketball team this year. I think they're going to surprise a lot of teams.

How does our roster and remaining eligibility break down? I feel like we have the pieces to do something but I haven't seen anyone showing enough onions to push whole to be better than the sum of the parts (at this point would settle for the parts to sum up).

For some really stupid reason I'm feeling optimistic about this squad that woefully underachieved a year ago given our depth and experience.

I think this veteran group should be top 5 in the ACC. Which means by March my hopes will be crushed and we'll be an 11 seed in the ACC tourney haha.

I'm not feeling it with Brey still there.

It will be Solomon, Hump and Wyche in that order that determine if this team can pull it's head out of its ass. My hope is that Solomon is being groomed/evaluated to replace Brey while Brey lets him be the man behind the curtain as he runs out his contract.

Think the year really comes down to how big of an impact Atkinson makes. The guards should be better due to experience and continuity plus Wesley or Konieczny may make an impact. Nate was great last year at forward, but that other forward spot was a hugely depressing spot for us. ND ranked 117 in defensive rebounding and 321st in offensive rebounding. ND will never be a dominant rebounding team, but if they can move into the top 100 for defensive and top 150 for offensive, their fortunes should change significantly.

This 1000 times. I keep reading things about if Brey will extend the bench, but the glaring hole has been the 3/4, and it's been that way since VJ left. If you just went down the roster and said "What is this players best position" how many 3's would we have? How many 4's? I think it's why Taylor is playing more than Zona in the exhibitions right now, as he better fits that mold.

How much has he played? I watched the first 12 or so minutes and he hadn't gotten in yet.

I watched the final ten minutes of the first half and he had 12 points. Last possession of the half, ND went iso for him. Play resulted in a turnover, but says a lot about what they think of him

I don't know about superstar, but he's going to be one heck of a college player. He's a bit jerky yet (just doesn't look smooth on offense the entire time, and I'm not sure, but his base looks awkward on his set shot, like it's really wide), but he has moments where he just explodes.

Other than him, I'm a bit worried we're nearly the same team as last year. Large swaths of time where we just chuck 3's and don't make anything. We just ignore the Atkinson in the post during these times. We look like there is much more effort on the ball defensively, but any longer possessions we give up a good shot. Goodwin still doesn't drive enough (I've come around on him backing players down and hitting that turn around 12 footer. We need him to do that more). I don't think I've seen Hubb drive yet. Laz hasn't been good.

And as I say all this, we finally look like a competent team on offense, with Atkinson slipping a pick and diving like Auguste used to.

Not sure so far. I know it's the first 2 games, but man, looks real familiar.

Is Paul Atkinson hurt or is this what it’s supposed to look like from him? He seems very slow, undersized and soft.

He's basically what you'd expect from a transfer from Yale. Decent size, smart player, technician. Not much of an athelete.

And FYI - we're 3/18 from 3. It's like a bad movie on repeat.
