The Xbox basically runs Windows 10.

Be that as it may, it's still probably a cheaper and more convenient endeavor for Nintendo to produce and sell a physical copy of their own property, rather than dealing with DRM and software issues with Microsoft and Sony.

Hopefully this impacts the market for the og games and make them somewhat cheaper and easier to find/obtain.

The answer to that depends entirely on how many units they ship. The development costs of going the DRM route may have been somewhat higher, but they have a whole mess of manufacturing and inventory costs when they go the hardware route.

That's true. They're not going to sell nearly as many $60 units as they would sell individual games if they were on PSN/Live for $10 each, but they also aren't negotiating/sharing their profit this way.

I guess I just figure that if they were in-line to make more money by swallowing their pride and working with Sony and/or Microsoft, they would have done so.

Will seriously depend on how the controllers feel and how accurate the output is. Anyone can emulate any of these for free.

Looks like you can plug an original NES controller in.

I'm curious if the games are all just in the system, or separate cartridges old school style... I assume it's far too small to play the og games...

I would assume so... though it would be awesome if they found some way of making og games playable on this thing, I still have a dozen or so... some not included in the console. My hope was the deck was more than just for show and you could actually use it... but I think this thing is about the size of one of the old game cartridges.

Yeah, I thought about buying one just for the possibility of having an updated/improved system to play my collection from (I'm assuming even my top loading NES will die some day). The fact you can't actually insert old games would be a deal breaker for me, no reason to purchase. I imagine most people interested in this don't have their carts anymore anyway, which is probably why Nintendo opted not to include loading carts.

I don't really understand the need for them to release this as a physical device. The marginal cost of selling software is zero, while this thing costs them money to manufacture. Seems to me like it would have been more profitable to release the software through Steam, Xbox Live, and PSN. They could have sold it much cheaper because they'd have no cost of goods sold.

ACamp touched on it, but Nintendo is cashing in on nostalgia. There's something about playing an old system with the same controllers, same graphics, there's a nostalgia factor. Right now our generation that grew up on the NES is approaching middle age and has the buying power. I have a buddy that makes $100,000+ a year just selling vintage toys/collectibles at conventions and on Ebay, that's his job. He deals mostly in GI Joes, Transformers, Star Wars, prototypes, etc. I assume if and when that market dries up he's going to move onto stuff like Power Rangers, Pokemon, and other items for the next generation of collectors that want stuff from their youth.

Shit's already ridiculously priced if you look online.

I had every Power Rangers Megazord they made from 1995-2000. I was young, so I played with them and beat them up a little bit, but they were in good enough shape that I put them in storage bins and tucked them away to keep just in case they were worth anything, just like my older cousin told me to do. At the very least, I could get them out in the future and my kids could play with them, like my dad did with his Transformers, if they weren't worth anything.

At some point while I was in high-school or college, without my knowledge, my mom cleared out all of my old storage bins and either sold it at garage sales or donated it.

I looked to get it out a few years ago, only for her to tell me that she gave all of it away. I lost my vintage Power Rangers stuff, my original Sega Genesis and a box of games, my Gameboy Color and most of my games (thankfully not Pokemon Blue Version), and a bunch of money in Pokemon cards.

I've never been so upset with my mother. She got rid of my childrens' college funds for nothing.

I probably won't buy an NES Classic, since I'm working on pulling something like this together for my boys:

Whiskey, if you created an "Idiot's Guide" on how to make that happen as you work through it, I would pay you the monies.

the size of the software in those original NES games has got to be from 8kb, to maybe a MB or 2 at most (I can't imagine any of them over 1mb). Even if the new device has a 250mb drive with it, I would think you could easily fit 400 games on it, possible even 500 (the majority of those NES games are probably under 500kb each, with ALOT of them significantly under 100kb).

They are playing on the emotional attachment and nostalgia of the generation ahead of you (mine)... as was noted earlier, all of these games can be had for free on emulators somewhere...

They can better recreate that true NES experience with their hardware/controllers, and make the device, in essence plug and play (ease of use). Emulators can be cool, but may require some setup/config, you might be using a controller that functions the same as an NES controller (but isnt the same). For me, emulators have always had some kind of limitation that is annoying, it might be a small limitation, but annoying nonetheless.

I know Nintendo will not allow this, but if the new device allowed adding other ROM's from external sources (usb, internet, etc.) it would probably render most, if not all other NES software emulators useless. (btw, they will never allow non-certified ROM's to be played, its just a pie-in-the-sky wish from me)

Considering this is going to sell for $60, and I'm a lifelong gamer that was in the 7th grade when NES came out, I can't see a scenario that I won't drop the 60bucks to get it. Plus after looking at the game list, pretty much everything I wanted to see was on that list, so it seems like a no-brainer for me.

I was planning on chronicling the process with photos and sharing it here anyway, so no monies necessary.

My brother and I are also planning on either: (1) building an arcade cabinet from scratch; or (2) buying a shitty old one off Craigslist and reskinning it with ND colors/ graphics. That's what I'm really excited about-- Turtles in Time, the Simpsons, Golden Axe, Street Fighter II, etc.

Yeah, illegally, and the experience blows. I've been playing Pokemon Fire Red on my phone but 1) it sucks on a touch screen, 2) it was a pain in the ass to figure out how to install, 3) I can't trade with or battle friends through any legitimate means. The existence of a bootleg version of something does not mean people won't pay for the real thing, especially if the user experience is superior. I think they would have sold a lot more digital passes of these games at half the price than they will the console at $60.

I think we are making the same point on emulators, I may have just worded mine poorly...

Agreed, I only brought emulators up to show that even though you can get most of this for free the nostalgia draw will be more than enough... without even getting into the other stuff.

On the size of the system I meant the actual size, not processing and such... IE can an old NES cart fit into the system, my assumption was it could not...

if they really wanted to break my bank they should have included some way of playing the older carts on it... game genie and everything.

I tried to track and look into some of the processes he mentioned in that Imgr post, but I have no idea about the console he was using or how to optimize the emulation or anything like that.

What a brilliant and cool idea for a compact, easy-to-transport game system though. I would've killed for something like that to take to my grandparents' when I was little.

Golden Axe was the absolute best quarter arcade game ever... I remember the lines for it at my local pizza stop... Mortal Combat was like that too when it came out...

Dusty ass table, and the TV still has the stickers on it! Also, the STB and DVD player are not the same height so the digital clock isn't level. Not to mention the plastic-ass Christmas tree. Also the table has wheels.

This guy's den is the worst.

I will definitely get that NES. 30 games is about 28 more than I have time for anyway.

Really what I want is just a controller that plugs into the TV and plays Mario Cart.

I still have each of these minus Contra... breaks my heart...

Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Select, Start.

WAA LAA.

But he built a portable Zelda-themed emulator with every classic video game ever created on it for his son. Do you think the kid cares about any of that other stuff?

I wouldn't be surprised if values are high now, but they'll probably continue to go up once the Power Ranger/Pokemon generation gets to their 30s. I started collecting NES games in my 20s, and many games you could get for $2-4 at old rental stores and flea markets. Today even some of the more common games go for decent cash, and the rarer stuff has jumped to stupid prices. Games I spent $5 on go for $20-30 ten years later. Stuff I spent $100 goes for $300, and stuff I spent $300 on can go for thousands. I know a guy that had a complete NES collection back in 2002 and sold most of it off for $6k. He'd probably have at least 3-4 times that value if he sold it today, he's always trying to get me to sell my collection to him.

By the way, for reference, here was my collector buddy's setup at the GI Joe Con a few weeks ago. He typically does $80-100k that weekend. It's insane.

If you decide to build one, look at lighter materials and make sure the wheels are sturdy and functional! I bought a PlayChoice 10 several years ago and it's heavy as fuck. A lot of those stand up arcade machines are the same way. Even with wheels it's a bitch to move, although the wheels don't really move much anymore and I'm not sure they ever did. Sadly it sits in my garage for now because the wifey won't let me put it in the current house.
