What's the Overwatch community like on PS4? I'm sick of damn idiots on Xbox who 1) don't talk, 2) don't play the objective, and 3) lock on to a single character for an entire match. Nobody ever wants to play tank or support so every team is some combination of Hanzo, Soldier, Widow, Torbjorn, Tracer, Bastion, Reaper Junkrat, Mei, and McCree. I end up with Lucio almost every time simply by default.

Not a lot of talking on PS4 but I haven't had much problem with people not playing the objective. I don't have any issues with class selection but I almost always play tank when it's available and when it's not I usually play either defense or support. So I might be eliminating that problem by myself.

Lately I've been favoring D.Va when on offense and Roadhog when on defense. Trying to get decent as Widowmaker to start payload matches because Roadhog takes way too long to get to the point in the early game. I'm terrible at sniping though which is weird because I've always been pretty good in other games. I don't really like to play as Winston. He's too fast and makes me want to chase people instead of playing tank efficiently.

Roadhog is probably my favorite character. My favorite ultimate, that alt shot that is always longer range than Tracer thinks and kills most squishy offensive characters in one hit, the totally satisfying hookpull and the incredible 200 heal every 8 seconds. From the character art alone I didn't think I would be a fan of his but man do I enjoy him. When you are feeling it with Roadhog you really do feel like a "one man apocalypse."

I'm thinking of switching my controls on Roadhog to put the mid-range shot on the right trigger and the short-range shotgun on the left trigger. That would put him more in line with Torbjorn and Lucio. Thoughts?

That doesn't sound like a bad idea to me. I probably use the fire and alt fire the same amount total per match anyway, so I guess it really comes down to how you play him. Roadhog is kind of interesting in that way. You either want to be ten steps away from the opponent or one step away from the opponent but never five steps away. Either ten or one and you are going to deal a ton of damage. But five steps away you are a dead man. The alt shot doesn't have the time to burst and it's too far away for the short-range blast.

Seems like Winston hard counters snipers and most support heroes, while Roadhog hard counters most offensive heroes.

Eh. Solder 76 can stay far enough a way from Roadhog that he can dodge the hook or the long-range projectile while it's in the air.

Ok one issue I have with RH that maybe you can explain. A ton of times that I pull a squishy towards me with the hook they end up getting pulled behind me. I'm like 95% sure it's not them running behind me because they are in the stun animation and they whizz right past my head. I've been screwed trying to kill Genji a couple of times that way.

Some characters have a way to break the hook stun. I don't know Genji very well, but I know Lucio can use his secondary attack to bump off.

So, does every character in Overwatch have a redeeming quality that makes them all necessary to play with at some point?

Or are there characters that no one ever picks because they're just not worth it?

There are a few heroes that are probably underpowered; for instance, I've never seen a Bastion on either team during a competitive stream, and Torbjorn is a pretty rare pick as well (though Zenyatta seems to be much more popular post Widow and McCree nerfs).

The rock-paper-scissors nature of the game, and it's focus on team composition, seems to provide almost every hero a viable niche.

The game is remarkably well-balanced, and Blizzard has proven in a short period of time that they're going to take care of the community with regular updates to address any issues. I can't think of any characters that are objectively better than others, since most of them depend on the map, phase of battle, and whether you're on offense or defense. You don't have to play every character yourself, but every character gets played by somebody.

There are certainly some characters that are more beginner-friendly than others, but those characters are definitely viable in high-end play as well.

I'm not sure I buy that list, since a recent stat from Blizzard had Torbjorn as one of the highest win percentages of all characters.

ETA: As you alluded to, that list seems to be based on high-end competitive play. Assuming none of us are that caliber, there are plenty of viable uses for Torb and Bastion in casual play. If you want to crush noobs, play six Torbjorns on a defense map.

I've got a $100 visa gift card ready to burn a hole in my pocket and a birthday coming up...

I'm gonna be re-joining team Sony and grabbing Overwatch, soon.

Yes, though you repeat yourself; any concept of a "tier list" is usually only applicable to high-end competitive play. It seems pretty accurate based on the streamers I've watched. Most teams are dominated by the heroes in Tiers 1 and 2. Tier 3 heroes are more niche/ comp-dependent, but still seen somewhat regularly. Tier 4 are all pretty rare.

I didn't want to make a new thread. Figured someone on here could help me.

I have an old external hard drive w/ firewire 400 connection. I have a new Mac desktop with thunderbolt ports. I know there was an upgrade to firewire 800 at one point. So I have a multi-part question.

1) Where is the best place to buy a new ext. hard drive with thunderbolt connections and minimum 1T storage? Right now, I'm seeing some pretty expensive options, so I wasn't sure if there are cheaper places to shop.

2) Do I need to bother with the 400-800-thunderbolt connections with adapters in order to do a file transfer? I know this works, but it's cumbersome and will require me to purchase two cords and two adapters.

3) Or, is there a place like Best Buy/Fry's/Apple Store where I can purchase a new external hard drive and have them transfer the files for me?

I feel like I'm the only person not playing Overwatch, yet has a PS4. I'm just over here playing the NBA 2K16 free PS Plus game for this month. Other than one year of college basketball on PS2, I haven't touched a basketball game since NBA Hangtime. I'm so lost with all this Iso stuff and I don't know how to run any plays  All I do is provide picks and occasionally cut to the basket for a layup (hopefully).

My roommate geeked out with 2k. Ran plays, changed scheme all the time. I ran zero offense...occasionally switched up my D, and beat the living shit out of him 4/5 times we played. Don't complicate it too much!

I'm currently playing as a SF in MyCareer mode. I got picked up by the Magic after my Rookie season. I'm about halfway through my first season and we're a .500 team (Which is a major improvement over last season apparently). The Magic's Center is supposed to be decent, but seems to be atrocious on defense. He constantly is giving up easy buckets inside. Kinda makes me wish I would have rolled a Center instead. Unfortunately I don't think the MyCareer mode lets you change defensive assignments up, otherwise I'd swap guys/spots with my Center and do the job myself. Kinda frustrating, but it's been fun building a player.

Offensively they're not much better. I'll try to run the plays they call out, but the guards often hold onto the ball until the shot clock is about to run out and then they take a wild shot. I'll make cuts to the basket and call for the ball. Sometimes they get me the ball in time and I'll take an easy dunk/layup. Sometimes they get the pass in late and it gets picked off. I've still got a bit to learn. I've gotten pretty good at setting picks, but I struggle to make use of the picks my teammates set for me.

High level Overwatch streaming right now on GosuGamers Twitch channel. Seagull on Luminosity (currently playing Pharah on the red team) is incredible.
I've been reading a lot about the differences between PC and console gameplay and it's left me much less impressed with high-level play. It's still a crazy amount of skill, but I don't have anything to compare it to because there's no PC baseline in my brain.

Some examples: Torbjorn is a viable hero in console play, but PC players handle his turrets easily. A flying Pharah is very difficult to shoot on console, but PC players can take care of her no problem.

PC gaming presents it's own set of problems/challenges vs. the same game on console....especially with RTS and shooters.

I'm not saying it's universally harder or easier, but for Overwatch specifically, it's just fundamentally different. Not better or worse, I just don't understand the nuance like I would if I were watching a console match.

Really? To me shooters have always been easier on a PC over a console, yet sometimes I'm forced to play them on console. I can't think of any drawbacks/challenges in comparison honestly. Payday 2 comes to mind, I've played it extensively on both console and PC. I have no problem getting headshots on everything in Payday 2 on PC, but it's a lot harder doing it on console because a mouse allows for far easier precision than a joystick. That's true for most shooters I would think. Unfortunately I rarely play Payday 2 on PC anymore because a lot of my buddies don't have gaming PCs.

The same is true for some other genres imo. Diablo 3 was far more enjoyable on PC over console, it's so much easier setting up actions on a keyboard as oppose to the limited inputs of a controller. However, there are some exceptions where I prefer certain games on consoles. Sports games come to mind, I can't imagine playing NCAA Football with a keyboard/mouse (Although you could plug a controller in). I prefer platformers, like Mario, with a controller too for obvious reasons.
