Notre Dame extends offer to Top100 OT

Atlanta (Ga.) Pace Academy Top100 offensive tackle Andrew Thomas tells 247Sports's Rusty Mansell that Notre Dame is the latest to offer.

247Sports ranks Thomas as the nation's No. 12 offensive tackle and No. 9 recruit in the state of Georgia overall.

"It's a great opportunity," Thomas said. "Good combination between academics and athletics."

Alabama, Arkansas, Clemson, Georgia, Florida and Michigan State among others have offered the 6-foot-5, 295-pound Thomas.

Harry Hiestand extended the offer for Notre Dame. Offensive line is a big position of need for the Irish in 2017.

This is a very odd situation.

Besides the one 247 release written by Wiltfong, where he passes along what he heard from Rusty Mansell (247's Georgia guy),

Notre Dame extends offer to Top100 OT

there has not been one other acknowledgement industry-wide that this offer happened. It's VERY odd that Loy didn't immediately retweet that... I mean, he retweets Wiltfong's bowel movement schedule.

What makes it even stranger is Wiltfong, Loy and Ivins were all together at a combine in Indy yesterday but yet only the one release from Wiltfong with no follow up tweet. He's tweeted a bunch of stuff since then to boot.

TP... any word?

If he's impressed with UGA's academics, then he'll been blown away by ND's, if we can wrangle a visit.

this is one of those. is he impressed with UGA's academic SUPPORT, or their academics. Kids seem to lump them together as one item, when they arent.

I missed the Scout article earlier when I posted above, here's a little more

“Notre Dame is definitely one of my top schools,” Thomas said. “I don’t really have a top list yet but Georgia, Clemson, Ole Miss, Alabama, Tennessee and Notre Dame are all up there for me.”

Scout, visiting for II:

“Georgia and Clemson are my top two, and Notre Dame is in third,” Thomas said. “I would get the chance to come in and play early (at Notre Dame). Obviously, the education is very good.”

lol like Notre Dame doesn't have one of the deepest Offensive Lines in the country.

What is this kid thinking? If he thinks that he's gonna come in and play early here, then maybe it's not a good fit.

I do think the line is talented but there is opportunity for early playing time at certain positions. Hell, Kramer has a shot to come in and compete at RG as a true freshman.

Everybody plays early... in practice, even when red-shirted.

I think there will be opportunity for kids to come in and play early in this class, especially on the exterior of the line. I'd say Big Mike leaves after this year and that leaves a lot of questions at tackle.

Bars has looked average through the spring at RT. How much of that is injury? Will he fully recover from an injury that severe, and if so, how long will it take?

After the question marks with Bars, there's just more unknown and questions from there. Sure there's talent with Eichenburg, Bordeaux, Kramer, Gibbons, and Lugg but all are unproven and most of those names project as interior players. I don't see any reason why a redshirt freshman tackle can't play if they have the talent. Thomas and Smith both have the potential to do so in my opinion.

I know this is a long shot, but let's say McGlinchey and Nelson both leave for the draft after this year. Not likely, but would anyone be surprised if they both get first round grades at the end of the season? That means the only guaranteed starters in 2017 would be Bars and Mustipher (and maybe Kraemer if he takes over RG this fall). Bars would likely slide over to protect the left side, but it would be a free for all for both guard positions and the right tackle spot. Thomas would be at a huge disadvantage to guys like Eichenberg, Kraemer and Boudreaux who have been in the system a year, but at the very least he would competing with mostly underclassmen for those spots, not incumbent veterans.

EDIT: Got here too late, Irish Man 3 made most of my points.

I understand what you are saying.

I think any player that has shifted from guard to tackle at ND lately has had a problem moving to right tackle. Much different footwork. Everyone talks about left tackle. Right tackle has to do more (drive, run blocking, pulling and in protection on pass plays picking up stunts, etc.) So I think it is much harder to move from anywhere to right tackle, than it is to move from right tackle to left tackle.

I believe it is a combination of coordinating timing and footwork, with more varying job responsibilities and protection packages.

If I weren't so ignorant, I would think that Harry, puts them in at right tackle to train them, and when they succeed, moves them to left.

Surprised to read this but according to UGA 24.7 Thomas visited UGA over the weekend and no commitment but they seem pretty worried about the ND visit coming up and thinks he could commit but the end of the summer but they said watch out for ND in this race.

UGA site also believes he's a plug and play guy right away so they think EXTREMELY high of this kid

At this point with Thomas, Smith & Sarell, I'll take the worst one. First come, first served.
