Marquez Callaway
Warner Robins (Ga.) high school
Cornerback/Wide Receiver
Signed: Tennessee

“I say Notre Dame,” said Callaway. “You can’t beat what they offer. Not knocking the other schools, but life after football is a lot easier there. I don’t know if that’s his reasoning, but I just feel like that’s the place.”

I still dont understand how this kid didnt end up signing with ND.

Yeah, I'm honestly kind of pissed we didn't offer. Very good athlete, wanted to be here. I always like taking kids that want to be here. Think he could've played on either side of the ball, and I think it was silly to pass on him... but maybe the staff saw something in camp they were iffy about. In general, I just don't really see how you pass on someone like him, but that's why I don't coach football.

Kinda surprised that Loy still has DR going to ND if he thought otherwise don't you think he would change it by now?

Denbrock had a long talk w/ carlos and drob on monday and from all accounts went well

stressed the academics and how it sets him up
stated he could do everything will fuller did in our offense
and we tried to convince him to make the tough decision to leave home

Just read Loys update. Never been more confident he's not coming to ND. The classic ND CALLED him and he'll have a hard time saying no to ND. Just like Caleb Kelly, Justin Hilliard, LB from Texas last cycle, etc.

Wouldn't be heartbreak unless we had a reporter pretending to give us hope.

Let's say Demetris picks Notre Dame. Just for giggles, let's say that happens.

Anyone think he sticks more than a season?

Depends on how things unfold with Stepherson and McKinley. Stepherson looks like the real deal, and McKinley could be a star. Will DRob be cool with sharing the spotlight? Or perhaps he's good enough to get PT over those guys anyway.

Also, if he DID sign with ND and got major PT alongside Stepherson this year, the guy I'm worried about is McKinley.

Loy: Hes going to be a tough pull for the Irish. The staff pushed hard yesterday. Did it work? We'll see Monday.

I think when he doesn't start on day 1, Carlos blows his lid and tries to sue Notre Dame for being unfair.

Can you imagine the angst every time this thread gets bumped - if by some miracle he commits to ND?

I don't think he steps foot on campus no matter what he says on Monday.

If he signs, he signs,.... Let him battle it out with the other Wr's and if the others get more PT for him and he leaves so be it.

If he signs and decides not to come, oh well.. We can give the scholarship to a deserving walk on

I really like Claypool and McKinley, so we'll be fine. I'd rather have Claypool than Drob anyways. All 3 would be awesome, but not going to happen and Claypool could be a monster.

I support Claypool as ND's future Megatron-lite at WR. But landing DRob means he's got some "multidimensional-positionability."

You guys are crazy. Ego aside, I wouldn't take two Claypools over DRob.

I'm excited for Claypool, but I'm not gonna start making crazy talk.

Isn't their 40 speed the same? Or very close? FWIW, ESPN has Drob as 4.64, Claypool as 4.60.

One's 6'5", 205 with large hands and can jump out of the building, one's 5'11" and 170 pounds.

Obviously we'd like to have both but I'd honestly take Claypool over Drob if I had to choose only one.

Are we talking purely in terms of talent? That's crazy talk.

Yes. I don't think it's crazy. Robertson may be more polished because he's been doing it longer and has better movement from side to side, but as far as freak athletes, not many go in front of Claypool IMO.

I could see Claypool being the first draft pick of this ND class, and Robertson having a draft similar to DeSean Jackson in the 2nd round, or Bryce Treggs who isn't even on a draft board I don't think. The NFL isn't breaking down doors for 5'11" WRs.

Treadwell isn't going to be the 1st pick because he has an injury history and is a burner (4.64). But he's big, mean, and catches everything. Claypool will be bigger than Treadwell.

Crazy? I've experienced enough 5-star flakes and busts to conclude that there is no such thing as a sure thing--whether it be off-field issues (Aaron Lynch) or on-the-field (Ishaq Williams).

Trading one 5-star WR for two high 4-star 6'5" stud WRs sounds pretty reasonable to me!

But no, I don't think DRob runs a 4.64! He is closer to 4.40, IMO. Watch his tape, the kid is lightening.

Honestly, besides the fact he's only played in Canada and the sites are afraid to give a 5-star rating to a guy who's played against 5'8" DBs, what physical trait does Claypool NOT have that a 5-star WR would?

Has to be route running and competition, right? He's 6'5" and 200 + already, and can run and jump like a gazelle.

I agree, he's got a lot of Michael Floyd/Mike Evans in him.

Assuming they pan out, it's like asking would you rather have 2 Sharks or 1 Golden Tate.

If I had to choose one for WR, it'd be Claypool. If I had to choose Claypool at WR or DRob at FS, I'd take DRob because we have such a hard time getting FS's. But he's not going to play DB, so I really would take Claypool.

If DRob really wanted to be at ND and had an easy demeanor, I'd probably chose him because that speed is harder to come by. However, the size athleticism that Claypool shows is also pretty hard to come by. I think they are such different players its hard to tell who will be more valuable or who is the better pro prospect.

Whoa now, don't lump me in on that Claypool-over-DRob talk.

I was saying that I really like Claypool's potential to be a monster. But landing DRob means that Claypool could use that size and athleticism at a different position, potentially.

Agreed, definitely on the list of guys that we didn't offer in hopes of signing McCulloch, Kelly, Drob, etc. My only beef with last cycle was, once again, leaving players like him on the table.

On the the Claypool/Drob conversation. I would rather have 2 Claypools than 1 Drob and its really not even close. Provided signing two Claypools means they can play different positions. WR/OLB, TE/DE, etc. That adds a tremendous amount of value.

I look at it the same way as trading back in the first round. I'm still going to get a really good player and now I get a second good player as well. Versus, just thinking that 1 prospect will be a superstar.

With that said, Robertson is one of the best talents in this class. So if it came down to just Claypool versus Drob, its definitely Drob.

Do you think Claypool can be a 'superstar'? Or as likely to become one as Robertson?
