Best guitarist? Maybe not because the case could be made for at least a dozen guitarists in the past 50 years. Hendrix, Clapton, Terry Kath, Prince, on and on. It doesn't change the fact that he deserves to be in the conversation.

Some people saw him as an androgynous flake but he was a seriously talented musician.

Yeah I don't really care where he stands with the often dumb GOAT discussion(s)... he was super talented and brought millions varying degrees of joy... he also seemed, while rather odd at times, to be a pretty genuine and down to earth guy in a profession filled with a large percentage of ass-hats... RIP

Saw his last concert, last week here in ATL. Just him and his piano. Amazing stuff. It was supposed to be 2 weeks ago, but he canceled and quickly rescheduled for the next week. The night of his concert, his plane home had an emergency stop. Not a lot of info as to why, but they inferred flu reason (the same reason he canceled the original concert).

His last show was amazing. I put it the "what are you listening to" thread the night I got back, but in short I said something like "his voice was as strong as it was in the 80s/90s"... He was running around the stage and very animated bouncing on around the piano. No signs whatsoever of being sick.

Anyway, one of my all time favs. Really bummed. Just got home from a client trip to Bentonville. Fixin' to tell Alexa to shuffle Prince, and crank the sexy mother fucker. GET OFF!

Wooly, if you guys vid your encore/close, send me the link please.

This is horrible news. Prince is one of my all time favorites. Not just a great performer, but also a brilliant song writer. He wrote songs like "Nothing Compares To You" and "Manic Monday" that made other artists stars as well.

My band is playing a gig tonight and I'm working on making Purple Rain or Darling Nikki our encore.

So bummed.

Don't forget Glamorous Life, I Feel for You, Pray, Jungle Love, Jerk Out, The Bird, Sugar Walls, Sex Shooter, Do Me Baby, +++++++

He was an amazing artist. His guitar work on While My Guitar Gently Weeps is so freaking great it brings tears to my eyes. Just heartbreaking news. May he Rest in Peace.

He's definitely in the conversation. So many to consider. It's just so hard to compare Hendrix, Clapton, Slash, BB, Malmsteen, Vai, Page, Chuck, and so many more to each other. I'm sure we could all have a 1A through 1Z...

I loved his music and his on stage talent.

Sad as TMZ is now reporting that it looks like drugs has taken another life. The sudden plane stop for "the flu" was actually to treat an overdose and he should have never left the hospital, but did within 3 hours of receiving the shot to counteract opiates.

Kath is such an underappreciated player by most and it seems that only a few people recognize that he was one of the top 10 guitarists in rock history. He was my first guitar hero and it still amazes me at just how incredibly good he was. I'd put him right there with Hendrix, Beck, Allman, Page, Howe and a couple others.

Sad news about Prince. I always just thought of him as more of a singer/composer/performer than a guitarist, but he really was a very, very good guitar player.

Guy was a legend and a big sports fan. Also appreciated that he continued to live in Minnesota. Just seemed more cool that he lived there and not L.A. or some place like that.

Prince is actually a big deal in MN, especially considering the paucity of famous people from the state (relative to say, Ohio, for example). Wouldn't surprise me to see flags at half staff.

Wooly, you're in the Michiana area, right? Who do you play with? My cousin is in Blammo and has his own band as well. Also friends with Joe, the bassist from The Roosters and OX8. Not sure if you're familiar with them.

Kath died fairly young and some people marginalized Chicago as a rock band because of their use of a horn section. I would put Kath's riff during 25 or 6 to 4 up there with almost anyone though.

Don't want to derail the thread, but don't forget Santana.

I know people had their phones out, I'll see if someone post it on Facebook.

Daddy's drunk, fellas.

Your gig is over and it's only 10:30? Real bands don't start until 10:00! lol

That's cool. They put on an awesome show. I think we might open for them this summer. Small world. I play with a band called Chippewa Project. We play mostly Niles bars and events.

Ha... Real bands don't play small bars on Thursday nights.

I'm pretty surprised at the reaction Prince's death is getting. I know he was hugely talented and influential, but I feel like we're seeing a Paul McCartney-caliber response.

How so? It didn't seem like he got any more attention than Bowie. In fact I saw much less about him on social media than I did for Bowie.

I'm seeing quite a bit more. But I also know a ton of people in Minnesota.

Driving into work this morning, three different radio stations had Prince marathons going. He has over ten headlines on Drudge. A woman in the office was crying. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, I just didn't realize he was *that* big. I think he missed my generation because he was too recent for my dad to get into him and pass it down but too new for me to be into him on my own.

I was never a huge fan (not because I think he's bad, but because I was just never exposed to his music much), but I think he was actually that big. As I understand, he's also largely responsible for the "Parental Advisory" labels on records.

ETA: To clarify, others were responsible for the labels...his lyrics were their motivation.

Fun fact, I turned on the radio today on my way to work and one of the Clear Channel stations was playing an unedited version of "Erotic City."

Someone's in trouble.
