Yea I like option 1 a lot better. And I think most of us have pretty high expectations for next season. That's not the kind of safety situation you want if contending for the playoffs is the goal.

Even if Williams weren't transferring, his name would still be there in green, so it doesn't change much aside from being down a body. But with the freshmen on campus and the redshirts from last year, the numbers are still okay.

Well Williams at least had a year in the system so he wasn't as "green" as the other guys.

At this point we are relying on fragile guys to stay healthy or one of the newbies to step in right away and perform at a high level.

I'm hoping Ashton White was playing safety for the scout team at times last year, that way it off-sets the loss.

My only general hope for the defense is that in a round-about, messed-up way, the lack of experience and injury history end up helping the defense, because BVG will need to tone things down, which hopefully eliminates some of the mental errors.

(I'm mentally preparing myself for a season full of 52-49 scores, though.)

Or that the increase in overall talent and freshman being ready to play has increased as fast in the backend of the defense as it has with some other position groups.

I understand the thought of signing guys regardless of the 85 limit bc of situations like Williams and etc.

One thing that is getting missed in this situation is a numbers perspective at the specific position.

Notre Dame signed 7 defensive backs last year. Perry will get moved to LB, so even if Damar Hamlin was added to the class, that's still 7 defensive backs.

For examples sake, if Hamlin was part of the class it would probably play out like this:

Hamlin - Play
Studstill – Play
Perry – RS
Pride – RS
Elliott- RS
Love – RS
Morgan – RS
Vaughn – RS

You could probably get a couple of those guys on special teams, but it's not fair to that kid to waste a year of playing time for only special teams. Redshirting 5-6 kids is not ideal for a eligibility perspective. It will be harder to recruit talent in future classes and you have an overload position, which hurts you as much as under recruiting a position.

Notre Dame played it right this year with DBs and brought in a heck of a class. It's easy to look in hindsight, but it's a numbers game both ways.

A fast FS 5th year transfer would make my summer. I'd still take a 5th year starting-level pass rusher over it, but FS would be my #2 want.

Is there any word on us looking at 5th year guys? You would have to think with Elmer gone, Williams Transfering, Randolph taking a medical, Jalen Guyton gone we should have 3 spots opened on the roster? We have depth at OL so I would look at guys who could come in and help at LB, DL, or secondary

at this point you'd be waiting on the conclusion of spring ball where many transfers happen as players realise their places on the depth chart.

I love your recent insight to the board and I'm glad you're posting so don't take this the wrong way but I disagree with this. Of all the DB's we signed last year only one of them (Pride) is pegged as a pure CB...the rest have the versatility to play all over the defensive backfield. And as you mentioned, guys like Perry and Morgan are suited well for LB in the future possibly. So that brings the number down to 5 and only one pure CB and 4 swing players who can play anywhere in the backfield. With Hamlin we would have got two of the best CB's in the country...and then the other guys (Love, Elliott, Vaughn) providing solid depth. That's how you improve your defense and win titles. Elite starters and quality depth. And everyone knows we always have the scholarships available to give to elite guys like Damar.

We never know how the position battles will play out but imagine a future with Pride and Hamlin as your starting CB's, Studstill and Elliott as your starting safety's, and Love and Vaughn as your backups or possible nickels. You can swap Elliott, Vaughn and Love to any position you want tho. But it sounds like the staff loves Elliott so I'd peg him as a future starter somewhere...probably at the safety spot opposite Studstill, so strong safety.

And if we're being picky, I'm glad we got Pride over Hamlin anyway. I would just rather have both...since we have PLENTY of room.

So what I'm gathering from this thread is Williams is no longer with the program or enrolled in the school. This may or may not have something to do with GB's ex, her booty, or her mom.

What about Pride? I thought he was close.

he is supposedly right there as well but at least the last i had read from 247/rivals he would likely redshirt...at least if my memory is correct

we are sitting at 84 currently

I was thinking of Pride as more of a nickel corner, moving Crawford to corner, and Butler to safety, if we really were that tight!

I get your argument as well, but you mentioned the main problem yourself in your post. There are too many swing guys that don't have positions. If you move Perry and Morgan to LB, you still have a numbers problem regardless.

There isn't a bigger fan of taking talented kids and letting the numbers fall into place. However, when it comes to 7-8 players in the defensive backfield, that's a problem in that class and future classes. You don't want all your guys ending up graduating at the same time, because that puts you into the same position in 4-5 years of bringing in bigger classes. Notre Dame can play around with eligibility to even it out, but it's still not an ideal situation for any program.

Glad to hear the coaches saw the things I saw when watching Mykelti's film. Plays several positions on his team, in other words, he's the best athlete and player on his Warren Central team (a very, very good program). He was voted Indy defensive player of the year over Asmar. This kid is a damn good player and pick up and there's no doubt in my mind about it.

I truly think when his career is over he will have been a pleasant surprise to everyone.

I too like him quite a bit but Studstill is coming and he's takin some PT, not sure from who but from someone. Hopefully it's Redfield

Lucci don't get a crush on a player. They always leave you.

This is like the trifecta of bad luck here, this kid was doomed from the start...and Koon, your quote is like the pot calling the kettle black

Best of luck to Mykelti on his next adventure.

He did end up transferring to Iowa Western though...should he be moved out of the stickies?

I don't know...seemed like an ironic statement given the grammar errors. Just saw it and thought it was a bit funny.

Wonder why his Twitter pic is still in an ND uniform?

Appreciate it. Can't see the embedded tweets, just the words.

Iowa Western doesn't have the funds for a camera man

I was disappointed that he didn't pan out at ND. He definitely had the look of a safety you want on your team. Guess the skill just wasn't completely there.
