I view it the same way as ND-football and IU-basketball fans. It just doesn't make sense to me. Those are two in-state schools that share competitive territory... they don't play every year in basketball (or do they?), and I don't know the last time they played football (early 90's?), but they still compete for local talent at times and are two different programs... I just don't know how you can split your allegiances between two schools based on how good they are at separate sports. It feels like cheating.

I deleted all your kentucky hoopla because fuck them.

first and foremost - I love all things ND, not just athletics. But I follow multiple sports programs (football, basketball (mens and womens), hockey, baseball, lax).

But growing up in Indiana as youth with Bob Knight strolling the sidelines, you didnt dare touch the remote in my house. As I noted above we had season ND football tickets too. So to me it is very easy to separate. I have a love for one University as a whole, and a deep affinity for the IU bball program only (as I grew up with them on in the household all winter long). As a kid do you realize that they may recruit the same kids? umm...no. You dont even know what recruiting is, let alone what the universities stand for etc.

As to your question if they play each other in bball. They didnt for a long period of time until the Crossroad Classic started about 4 years ago. Then they play each other every other year (same with IU/butler) as IU and Purdue cant play each other out of conference.

So really it has nothing to do with how good one program is to the other (for me) as in my life (after Bob Knight of course) I would put their bball programs on par with each other.

So if im "cheating" then so be it. I'll tell my grandpa (rip) when i get to heaven he raised a cheater...

See I can respect that my point more or less was just liking a team because they are good in one sport. My grandpa was a die hard Cubs fan, die hard but I always rooted for the Soxs even though I grew up on the north side. Everyone has a story for why they root for certain teams and I can respect yours.

Yes.

It's different if you were raised into it... I was raised to root for UC despite living in Kentucky. I get that. You can't do anything about it, and you can't set aside that passion (I used to root for UK as well as UC, but now that I'm older, I recognize that UK fans are trash, and so I severed my ties. I'm probably an exception on being able to do that, though.)

Perhaps the past was different. Your grandpa probably had no problem rooting for IU and ND at the same time, because both schools were in-state, and represented greatness in different sports, and probably a little bit because they weren't yearly rivals.

But it still feels like picking and choosing based on athletic success, which I don't think is as acceptable in this age of " the bandwagon." So maybe it's just a generational/age thing that makes guys like GB and I see it differently.

Yes, even more so, but I wasn't alive.

There was some good ND basketball in the 70s though.

You youngsters missed some good times.

73 I cleaned house betting with co-workers. Between ND winning the NC and the run the B-ball team had, I rarely lost. IMO that's the best season in the history of Irish sports.

I'm pretty sure GB is younger than me, and you are a decent bit older. GB just likes razzing on shit.

Me? No way, I am probably the second youngest poster on this board after Philly just celebrated his 13th birthday

I think SW Indiana is heavily German Catholic. I know Jasper has a large population of German Catholics. Roncalli and Jasper had some great head to head games in the semi-state back in the 90's and early 00's. They hated each other even though they only met during the tournament.

Yes we did. Back in the day when we used to win state titles in football on the regular...

I can like ND & IU sports. I'm from the Region and didn't attend either school.

But NO ONE can like ND, SC & Stanford football. They play round robin every year. Someone has to be the bad guy in the group. Don't try to assign equal weight to those concepts, that's a classic case of false equivalency.

I've always just liked the way LSU plays plus Death Valley I don't think there is a better environment for a football game. You could say I jumped on the bandwagon but it's not like I watch all of LSU games or follow their every move.

Maybe it's just me making fun of my buddy who is an Arkansas football and KSU football fan but a die hard Kansas basketball fan. What if someone was a Duke basketball fan but a UNC football fan? Wouldn't give them grief? Maybe it's just me but I know I'm not alone here. If you want to be an IU basketball fan and a ND football fan I am not stopping ya nor should my opinion matter. I just like to give my buddy a hard time about it because he gets so worked up over this convo. Mind you he roots for the Chiefs when they are good and claims himself the biggest Packer fan.

I guess I just don't understand rooting for two programs from the same state because one is good at basketball and the other is good at football.

Growing up in Indy (myself anyways) we always watched IU hoops and ND football. I learned to love the teams before I even knew there was a such thing of higher education. Hopefully that helps you better understand? Think it is like that for a lot of IN grown people.

And then you have those weirdo Purdue fans...a breed to themselves.

Here's something else about ND basketball that a lot of Indiana people had a beef with. Digger was there 11 years before he ever got a Indiana player that he played. In '82-'83 he brought in Joe Price, Kenny Barlow & Scott Hicks. Digger brought in guys from the east coast almost exclusively. A lot of people were ok with the football players being from Western PA, Ohio, Chicago and California but basketball is as everyone knows in Indiana...sacred. There's a lot of pride when it's the name of your state on those uni's being worn by guys from your state. Anyways, that hadn't been brought up so now it has.

“I’m going with B2G for a tournament so we’re checking out Michigan and Notre Dame,” Daniels said. “I’m very interested in meeting coach (Jim) Harbaugh.

“I love Michigan. My dad is a huge Michigan fan. He grew up in Michigan so we’re big Michigan supporters.”

“Notre Dame I love,” Daniels said. “I can’t say I have a top school because I haven’t visited. Being this early, I haven’t checked out many schools but Notre Dame, as prestigious as it is, and I know a couple guys at Notre Dame and who have been through Notre Dame.

I work out with Joe Schmidt and Cam McDaniel, their last running back, and Troy Niklas with (the) Arizona (Cardinals), they all work with my same performance coach so I know them really well and they love it there.

Had a good visit, dad was on campus with him so that's gotta be a bonus. Haven't met a parent who didn't like ND

Dad's from the Detroit area and they spent time in Chicagoland too so they have significant Midwest experience. Dad has coached JT up until last year including national ranked club teams so this is definitely a package deal.

Wiltfong and Loy w/ the cb

loy says he will likely be the #1 rated qb and 5*--obviously if things continue at the rate he has been going

"It was a great honor and a fun time to spend time with Coach Sanford," Daniels said. "He's a great guy."

"Notre Dame is a very prestigious school with incredible tradition, very similar to Mater Dei," DAniels said.

Can't be mad at that news.

Would probably help with landing the two big time receivers from there we're recruiting as well.

2 Things

First it's a little early to be excited about a 19 prospect.

Second It should be interesting to see how the 18-19 recruits think about Sanford leaving because i am pretty sure he is going to get a bigger job then he has now.

Think so?

I bet MS is in it for the long haul at ND.

I would love for this to happen. I think he has built himself as a respectable character guy for being so young on the coaching front. He is obviously very smart to earn the position he has at ND, Along with the coaching ability he show with Kiser was very impressive. I just think it would be hard for someone to turn down a head coaching gig and have their own program at this age.

I have often wondered the same thing.

I feel like the "Future 5-Star" guys, when rated highly or so highly touted so many years in advance, don't ever live up to that billing. But I'm also probably mis-remembering, or not paying attention.

Dylan Moses is the first once I can remember that's hung around as a top-10 recruit the whole time. Who was the QB that committed to USC in 7th grade and was supposed to be a sure-fire, consensus #1 guy 5 years from then?

That would be 3 now. Their LT is next.

Jimmy Clausen turned out OK.
