TheLead Sports » The Surreal Story of StubHub Screwing Over a Kobe Fan

Jesse sent us an incredible email that recounted the entire story in his own words and provided all the evidence we could ever ask for: his entire email chain with StubHub customer service, ticket receipts, a semi-incriminating voicemail from a FlubHub supervisor, you name it.

Below, Jesse details his fiasco, and convinces us to never, ever, ever purchase tickets on StubHub again. At the end of this piece (if you’re compelled to do so), we ask that you share Jesse’s story on social media, and force StubChub to issue a statement and honor Mr. Sandler’s original purchase. What they did is complete bullshit, and the online ticketing giant deserves a PR nightmare…

meh. sucks, but not like SH purposely tried to dick over the kid. the seller is the one that dicked them over. the kid should have got the 20%, and perhaps they should have banned the seller. the kid still would have bitched about SH...

Basically, he bought a bunch of tickets for fair market value. And then the seller... a month after the transaction... realized he could get more money. And by more money, I mean the value went up 1000%.

So then StubHub refused to give him the tickets or comparable tickets, after he had already paid the money and been told he had the tickets for a month.

Per social media, StubHub is now going to accommodate him thanks to the bad PR.

They've already taken to the Twitters to "right their wrong."

They "don't condone market manipulation" [if they get caught, that is]

And they "airballed this one" [aka got burned by the PR nightmare]

I hope the guy says "thanks but no thanks" and gives the press to another company.

Most of the comments at the bottom of the article are right on. The seller of the tickets on Stub Hub should be required to send the tickets to the buyer within 48 hours. The system is set up for failure when ticket sellers can sit on tickets and then back out of the deal if the tickets appreciate significantly.

Lots of people saying use Seat Geek. I've never used them, but I will certainly check them out now.

The kid certainly sounds like a Kobe fan. He got screwed and certainly should be angry, but damn son. Learn to type without using the caps.

Stubhub's system is flawed but they aren't the one's who backed out of the deal.. The seller backed out.. I don't know what you expect Stubhub to do.. fork up 10 grand for 4 new tickets? Doesn't seem logical.. If anything the seller should be getting Hammered and Shamed for being a rat

I agree that the seller is actually the one that screwed this guy of his tickets, but it's stub hub policies that allowed him to do it.

Stub Hub should require tickets to be delivered withing 48 hours. Instead sellers sit on their tickets, waiting to deliver them until maybe a week before the event. If the value of the tickets increase in the mean time, they simply cancel because they know they will get little more than a slap on the wrist while they make a lot more money.

In all honesty, I believe Stub Hub does little to fight these kinds of things from happening, as they end up making more money when all is said and done. They charge the seller a 20% fee for backing out of the sale, then the seller simply relists them at a higher price and Stub Hub makes even more money on the second sale of the same tickets.

Exactly. Stub Hub basically enabled and encouraged the fraud.

I do agree with this 100% Stubhubs system is flawed... they don't care either

How exactly is a seller able to renege on a sale 18 days afterwards? Wouldn't the buyer just have the tickets already?

Had a similar situation for a ND game, although not nearly as bad or purposely deceitful. The seller sold me the tickets, but he wasn't the direct owner. He was banking on getting them from someone else (not ND directly), who he allegedly always bought from. It was a Fn mess that came down to literally getting the tickets the Friday before the game, although we purchased them at least a month a head of time if I had to guess. He offered us different tickets with about a week to go because he hadn't yet received the exact tickets we purchased.

Seller is only required to deliver the tickets in time for the actual game. In this case the game wasn't until April 13th. I'm guessing if the tickets hadn't appreciated at all, the seller would've probably sent them to the buyer sometime around April 1st.

Stubhub pisses me off - when you list you can put in delivery dates. Be sure you have immediate delivery or don't buy. These are extreme situations but also exactly where flaws in the system are exposed.

The ultimate BS - if I found better tickets I could not back out of a purchase like this. There are plenty of times you can get cheaper tickets later (or can't make the event) and would gladly take a 20% haircut to dump the old ones. Sellers would never go for that so they get protected - buyer beware!
