Is it wrong that I keep coming here looking for injury updates? I already know the answer. I'll see myself out.

Everything I need to know about Joe Schmidit is that he never missed a snap and only had 65 total tackles this year. That's everything i need to know about him and BVG son treatment with him

And who's fault is it that he can't get anybody else ready for this complex defense? I look all over the country and seeing younger players make greater impacts early on during the freshman and sophomore seasons but BVG can't get anybody ready to roll early on. He needs to look himself in the mirror and realized this isn't working

Maybe, just maybe, Morgan isn't that good. I certainly hope he lives up to his HS ranking but he didn't prove anything last year is that he was an athlete.....that put himself out of position often and took poor angles.

He came in off the bench halfway thru the year and was a freshman All American, it's not like he sucked.

You know for a freshman middle linebacker playing in this awfully complex scheme I thought he played pretty well. Fine, he's not that good but if no other linebackers are good enough to take 38 off the field who is that on?

IMO, it's not that he can't get anyone else ready. Tranquil looked good. Tillery looked good. Crawford was going to start at Nickle. Onwualu looked pretty good. It is possible that Schmidt is just a rare kid when it comes to football smarts.

This issue is that BVG can't seem to understand that Schmidt simply doesn't justify his reps. Its great that he knows what he's doing. And the guys behind him might really be boneheads who make big mistakes. But Joe's lack of athleticism is effectively just as costly. Why do we blitz him? Why do we drop him into coverage? etc...

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Our defense wasn't playing that well with Joe on the field. If the D as a whole was out there making plays and not giving up insanely long TDs then I could understand how the "QB of the Defense" was important. But considering all the crappy plays we gave up there is simply no excuse that Joe played every single snap.

See Tillery hit a fall and was almost an non factor late in the season. Who knows about Crawford but reviews were strong and I don't ever really recall Onwualu looking good or playing consistently any stretch of the season. I think we need to upgrade that spot. If no one is ready then we are in more trouble next year on defense then we have been all season this year.

He definitely gets a pass in my book for his play last year, he was never really put in a position to succeed. But anybody who was watching knew the freshman AA honors were a joke. He definitely did not look like he was game ready from a mental and instinctual level, and we don't have any more information to suggest he's there now than we did after the Music City Bowl.

Is it the coaching staff's fault that he isn't ready? Perhaps. But it doesn't mean Morgan is the answer right now.

For what it's worth, we've seen a lot more from Martini than we have from Morgan, but all everyone seems to gripe about is that Morgan hasn't seen the field.

Exactly how I feel about it right now. I was defending Joe a lot earlier in the season, but in retrospective I was wrong. Defense wasn't near as good as I thought it would be considering the athletes we have on this team. Why would you keep Joe in there if he's not making plays and the team is not executing. At least take him out for obvious passing down. He can't cover...

To be fair didn't Tillery get injured halfway through the year and played with it? I noticed a big drop off after Navy maybe? Pretty sure he got injured then and after that he didn't look the same

I would probably attribute it more to a true freshman playing a starter's share of snaps at a strength position. I've got a feeling that even as special as he is for a young guy, he just plain got worn down towards the end of the season. Would be interesting to see how his strength #s looked down the stretch compared to early in the season. I'm expecting big things from him next year.

Yes he did. He had a pretty bad hyperextended elbow which obviously hurt him a little when it came to shedding blocks, standing up the oline and tackling but I also agree that he probably got a little worn out down the stretch. Hopefully we will see the early season Jerry tomorrow.

Great rep, he tried as hard as he could, can't ask any more of him. Good luck, Joe.

Just a fair warning... Lets not turn this into a celebration of Joe's impending departure from the team. Keep it classy please. Joe gave his all and did way more with his time at ND than any of us did. He was also held in high regard by his teammates.

Thanks for all your effort and representing ND Joe.

Whether anyone liked his playing ability shouldn't matter. He gave 110% every time he stepped on the field and was always positive and uplifting to his teammates. Will be a nice addition as a GA.

I have a feeling that he will be making bank on the Street, next season....

Hate his play but a great man to represent the university.
