I think we have a great shot against OSU. They are not running on all cylinders like last year, but they are still a formidable team capable of beating down other teams. We are a good team, who with some injuries is not quite full strength but we are also an up and coming powerhouse.
If you look at recruiting this year and next, the staff is trying to fix the secondary and pass rush and it shows. If we can get those two positions solidified, along with the ridiculous talent we have on offense, ND will be a very hard team to beat for several years. BK has built some really good depth, and it showed clearly this year.
Here are my keys to the game:
1) BVG needs to stop some of the exotic blitzes that force DL to cover the middle of the field, constantly blitz an ineffective Joe Schmidt, and causes our other LBs and CBs to run across the field after the snap to cover the area vacated by the blitz. I think BVG's defense is almost a schematic advantage for the other team every week. I want to see a standard, solidly planned defense that allows our best play-makers to play to their strengths, and not dial up exotic ill-timed blitzes that leave open holes for opposing QB's to easily exploit. Scale it down and be consistent with defensive calls throughout the game.
Let Day and Smith blitz, Schmidt drop back into coverage, and the safeties cover whatever comes over the middle of the field. Make the QB beat you with talent, which I don't think OSU's QBs can do by themselves.
This is by FAR the most important key to the game. We have the talent to compete on defense, but we need to stop beating ourselves with bad schemes.
2) I think Ronnie can handle their Bosa. Both our OTs are future 1st round picks. I am not as worried about this matchup as some. Sure they will apply pressure, but the only way they are getting consistent pressure is up the middle on our G's and C's, and only if they blitz consistently. That means open passing lanes down the middle.
3) Given #2, our TEs, slot WR, and RBs need to exploit the middle of OSU's defense. I think OSU will gamble a little bit to try and rattle Kizer, but I think he stands tall and makes them pay if they do.
4) While Kizer struggled toward the end of the season, he played well against Stanford. He has matured against a tough schedule and I think he will be fine. I am not worried.
5) CJ and Adams give ND some real depth. The Irish should establish the running game early and continue it because our OL quality and the RB depth can wear down any team in the country, in my opinion.
6) I think Butler is good enough against OSU receivers, but he needs to wrap up. What will kill ND defensive backs is not getting burned, but missing tackles and allowing OSU receivers to get big plays from middle passing routes. I am not worried about screens which ND DBs do a pretty good job of covering, but I am worried about crossing routes and outs in which ND DBs whiff on the tackle and allow big plays.
7) Protect the football and do not turn it over. Play safe and win. Play sloppy and get beat by 10-14 points.
8) BK - While I think Urban is a top 3 coach, BK has made strides this year. I think he is much more even in his demeanor and has shown well in the locker room. His team respects him, and his staff is more solid than in year's past. I don't think the gap between BK and Urban is so large as some - that gap shrunk this season.
Go Irish! This is your statement game. Just win baby.
