ECU firing is dumb because he almost beat florida plus he went to bowl games the last 3 years plus losing starting QB prior to season, what the hell do they mean update program?

Bronco Mendenhall to UVa?? Amazing hire for Hoos

WOW. That is a crazy good hire. He's LDS, so leaving BYU period is really shocking.

The ACC has hired Richt and Mendenhall, if I would have told you that before the season started, would you all have thought it would be to Miami and UVA?

"Basketball conference" my arse.

I still don't understand why this thread (that was originally the hot seat thread) is now doubling for the other thread.

Bronco Mendenhall Hired to UVA ?! woah totally unexpected

Yeah, that's out of the blue. Some had said they were intentionally using smoke screen (re: Sanford, etc.) and it would be a name that no one was talking about. They were right.

Not a classy move at ECU.

Teams with lower talent levels than ours are usually not playing the kind of schedule we play.

But I feel ya. I can see the frustration, but I've also seen a lot of positives out of our defense, I think it will be BVG, I see no benefit in firing a guy after 2 years, where one year we were decimated with injury and the second year played good enough to be 12-0 (2 plays away)

We played some horrible offenses with this tough schedule. 5 teams finished 80th or lower, so almost half the schedule was pretty garbage offenses. With that said, I do think he should get another year but mainly because I want to see how this class closes.

He had said some things over the last 2 seasons indicating he was feeling less than loved...

Welp BYU, careful what you wish for...

All that said never saw this as a real possibility...crazy.

Is BYU higher in the pecking order than Utah? I know that Whittingham is an alum of BYU but I don't know if there'd be a big reason for him to head to BYU other than that

As a student at BYU (yes, I am a Mormon. My father graduated from Notre Dame and I grew up close to South Bend so Notre Dame is in my blood.) I can honestly tell you guys that Utah is a much more attractive venue in almost any sport. Only in Baseball is BYU better continually better. That being said, most football players here were not huge fans of Bronco nor were BYU fans. BYU fans have the insane idea that they should be an "elite" athletic team. I'm not surprised that he left. Plain and simple.

i'm going to say no here, but its close i think, BYU has some history/tradition. although independence may be a tricky road to navigate for byu, utah being in a conference has a clearer path to the playoffs.

I think whitingham stays at utah unless its a big time top level opportunity.

Thats hard

...I think Whit would view Utah as the better gig, because he's already made that decision. I think anyone outside the BYU family would view Utah as the better gig.

...Every time this thing comes up Andy Reid comes up. I think if both jobs were open and he was considering the college ranks, his decision might surprise folks.

Does anyone think the Mendenhall thing has to do with the playoffs? I think it would be relatively hard for BYU to get into playoff consideration with their current schedule. I have heard that they have had a hard time getting big name opponents, and aren't having any luck joining a conference either. I think he may have seen the writing on the wall and was looking for a way out to possibly have that opportunity.

Doubtful that Virginia is making the playoffs any time soon. BYU probably is more likely to make the playoffs than Virginia, and the Cougars' chances are slim as it is.

More importantly not all shoved together into the Silly Season thread. Or non ND football threads posted in ND Football section. Mods be slackin.

Pretty surprising IMO. Did Mendenhall think he had hit the ceiling with BYU with them being independent? Too hard to get top notch recruits? What does he expect to accomplish with UVA that he couldn't with BYU?

Virginia hires BYU's Bronco Mendenhall as next coach - CBSSports.com

While this move comes as a surprise, Mendenhall did mention in April that he felt BYU needed to be in a Power Five conference within three years. It appears that with no momentum toward that happening, Mendenhall decided if BYU wasn't going to be a Power Five program, at least he could be a Power Five coach.

Surprising to me as well. I don't see him replicating his success at BYU at UVA in the ACC. Nor do I see Polynesian LDS recruits heading all the way to the Atlantic Ocean to play.

The ACC is stacking coaching talent. Considering we are quasi-affiliated with them and you throw BK into that pool it might be the most talented coaching conference in the country. The B1G would probably be #2.

I consider BYU to be a better a job than UVA. Sure UVA is a "power 5" school but I think the ACC is a conference that will be on the upswing over the next few years and UVA is a bad program. BYU has a unique recruiting advantage (Polynesian LDS recruits) that he won't be able to replicate at UVA.

I think Mendenhall, if he was frustrated at BYU could have found a better job if he waited a bit. He was a coach I had my eye on in case BK decided to leave for the NFL.

Rutgers football to hire Ohio State coordinator Chris Ash

Ryan Dunleavy 3:20 p.m. EST December 5, 20

PISCATAWAY – Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash is set to become the next Rutgers football coach, two university officials said.

The hire is pending formal approval from the school's Board of Governors, which is set to meet at noon Monday, according to posted public notice.

An introductory press conference is expected to follow.

Ash, who is replacing Kyle Flood, has coached against Rutgers each of the last three seasons – twice under Urban Meyer in the Big Ten and once under Bret Bielema in his previous post as defensive coordinator at Arkansas.

It will be the first career head coach job for Ash, who reportedly pulled out of contention as one of two finalists at Syracuse earlier this week.

Ash also coached under Bielema at Wisconsin, where former legendary football coach Barry Alvarez is the athletic director.

Alvarez is close friends with Rutgers Board of Governors chair Greg Brown, who had a major say in the hiring process, along with new athletics director Pat Hobbs and BOG Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics chair Ken Schmidt.
