I think we could punch it in from the goal line just fine without needing to risk it. If our running or blocking sucked and we couldn't I'd understand then. But it doesn't.

He's been much more physical on the inside this year versus last. Its definitely helped the consistency of the run game D.

He is maybe the most impressive athlete I have seen here. The funny thing is that the other guy that I think is closest to that kind of ability is in the same class as him, Max. I hope he turns it on after the bye and we get to see them both play up to their potential at the same time. Could really change the perspective of our defense as a whole.

Can I also add the completely different results that both Schmidt and Jaylon had to that same play. Schmidt ends up 5 yards off the line nowhere near the play and Jaylon is in on the tackle. Doing so while having to go across the formation. This is just a microcosm of many plays.

5 yards would be generous.

What is this, Pile on Joe Schmidt Day?

Glad Morgan is modeling his play after Jaylon and not Joe. Joe has heart, but his play leaves a lot to be desired.

I will add though, that this particular play shows more of what Jaylon can do as opposed to what Joe cannot. It looked like Joe diagnosed the play properly and was there to fill the gap. Jaylon just happened to blow the whole thing up and force the runner in another direction. It's at the point Joe gets caught in a block but Jaylon's athletic ability allows him to still get to the RB as the tackle is being made. So, not like Joe totally messed up or anything. Jaylon is just a bajillion times better.

Cage also got driven completely out of the play..If you watch Schmidt on the play he just kind of sits back absorbs the block and just gets bullied. Jaylon is a man amongst boys out there.

Jaylon Smith Semifinalist for Butkus, Bednarik Awards // UHND

Notre Dame junior linebacker Jaylon Smith has made the first round of cuts for two of the most prestigious defensive player awards on Monday when he was named one of 10 semifinalists for the Butkus Award and one of 20 for the Bednarik Award.

So far this season Smith is pacing Notre Dame with 66 tackles to go along with 6 tackles for loss and a sack. He’s also forced a fumble and recovered a pair of them as well. Smith’s 66 tackles are 20 more then the next closest member of the Irish defense, Keivarare Russell, and 23 more than fellow Irish linebacker Joe Schmidt.

Smith was named one of three finalists for the Butkus Award last year as a sophomore so his presence on the semifinalist list this year is no surprise. The Butkus Award is handed out to the nation’s best linebacker every year. The Bednarik Award, meanwhile, is given out to the best overall defensive player.

One opponent the Irish have already played – USC’s Su’a Cravens – and another they have yet to face – Stanford’s Blake Martinez – also made the cut for the Butkus Award. Almost shockingly after seeing him up close last weekend, Temple’s Tyler Matakevich was left off the list. For as good as Smith is for the Irish, it could very well be argued that Matakevich was the best linebacker on the field last Saturday night in Philadelphia.

Matakevich was, however, one of the 20 semifinalists for the Bednarik Award semifianlists along with Smith. Other Notre Dame past and future opponents on the list include: Cravens from USC and Clemson’s Shaq Lawson.

Manti Te’o was the last Notre Dame linebacker to win the Butkus Award when he took home pretty every award imaginable other than the Heisman in 2012. That same year Smith was named the High School Butkus Award winner as the nation’s best prep linebacker. Te’o also took home the Bednarik Award in 2012.

Found it interesting to see on "A Season With" BVG challenging Jaylon to be a more vocal leader. I mean he straight up called him out in front of the entire defense in meetings. I kinda like it. Also got the impression that BVG looks at him as the defensive leader, not Schmidt.

Plain and simple, your best players should/need to be leaders. Along with the injuries, I think some of the downfall last year can be attributed to the fact that a lot of the "marginal" players were the leaders/captains, with the exception of Day.

Disagree. I don't think being the "best player" obligates you in anyway to be a leader other than to lead by example. HOWEVER, I do think that being a captain obligates you to do so. If Jaylon isn't living up to his part of the bargain, or coaches think he can do more, then I'm glad to see the staff isn't afraid to call him out. And I don't think it's a bad thing. Some people just need a gentle kick in the ass every now and again to get back on mission.

It is convenient when your captains also happen to be among your best players. More than anything I think a captain needs to lead by example though, they don't need to be the best players, but I think they need to have the right attitude and leadership qualities. I think most captains should be extroverted individuals that can bring a team together and motivate. While an introverted captain can still lead by example, they may be less inclined to huddle the team together and raise their spirits when things aren't going well.

IMO-
The best game he's ever played in a Notre Dame jersey.
Always fills up the stat sheet, but this one was littered with impact plays.
