so he's definitely on scholly for the season? I would have thought his status is still undecided depending on what happens to ishaq?

I don't know than anything is definite; but didn't Kelly say they probably wouldn't know until the last minute?

I still think that there will be room for both in a few weeks.

I read on ISD that there will be two medicals. I'm assuming that's how he'll get his spot?

There was some talk in Deeb's thread about an injury and him not seeing field this year. Suppose he could be candidate if true.

Interesting to listen to Mike Frank and Bill Reagan on the ISD podcast they reckon due to Chase's size and underrated pass catching ability he could be the best all round Tight End on the roster

Don't think he stays at ND though. Love the kid though, such a warrior.

Why did we ever switch him away from DE? I thought he was pretty good as an underclassmen before injuries. Our lack of pass rush from our defensive ends this year has been disappointing.

I think it was shoulder injuries preventing him from keeping on enough weight to play on the D line. Am I remembering correctly?

What, his shoulder injuries didn't allow him to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? Just kidding

I think he would surely be welcome back at ND for another year given how much he has played this year.

Because Okwara is always in pass defense.

bring him back next year for sure, its a no brainer

This I agree with 100%!

If you watch play in the trenches, he and Tyler Luatua have been a 'big part' of the resurgence of our offensive line.

In other words, the real problem was with defensive scheming against zone blocking, always getting seven men on our five. Rhule and Temple were MASTERS at this!

They did as well as Clemson, with players way down on the measurables chart.

And if you watch. Chase and Tyler started banging on people when given the chance!

Smart football people say moving to two tight end sets is a great counter for defensive line schemes and stunts. And once you have established the superiority of your wide receivers (think Fuller), whether your running game steps up full throttle right away or not, you have created a matchup nightmare, because on any given play that big old hoss can go out for a short pass to an empty flat, or to loose coverage by a much smaller defender.

If I were Kelly, I would keep Luatua and Hounshell forever. And just have off season wet dreams about them with Jones, Weishar, and Smythe healthy!

I thought it was. He is a Senior, right?

Wish him the best going forward. Not sure if he has a fifth year but hope he gets to play somewhere.

I wouldn't bring him back. He's a nice story and all but the TE position is so ridiculously stacked to me it'd be a waste of a scholarship. I'd rather use it on someone else on the team or get another '16 recruit.

I understand!

But it is a great way to get an extra blocker on the field that has proved himself. He has played well this year against some really good defensive players.

And the reasons I am bullish on taking him this coming year, more so than say a player at another position of need such as Avery Sebastian,
  • is that '16 becomes that hole before we get 'the tight end haul' for '17.
  • and Chase has demonstrated that he is really good at it, being more durable (now) than most of our tight ends.

In other words, is it worth risking re-injury to Smythe, Weishar, or Luatua, all of whom have been pretty banged up, when you can bring Hounshell in to take plays and cut the risk of injuries for the whole pool of tight ends. Besides, after watching Chase, he has an inherent ability to block speed rushers, or at least does better than most outside of Ronnie or Mike!
