The episode that he was on the sideline phone with the coaches and said "who do I need to 'coach'" rubbed me the wrong way. If anyone needs coached, it's Joe.
I'm also surprised at the complete lack of cursing during games or in the locker room by both the coaches and players. It's probably just great editing by Showtime, but I can't believe Kelly hasn't dropped an eff bomb during a speech.
Last post in Joe for me, you saying this is a lot different then saying his douchey or some sort of fakey leader. He's rubbed me the wrong way but he was also voted to be a captain by his teammates and that's enough evidence to me that he is liked and respected by his teammates.
Btw I love the show!!!! I wonder what the bye week show is going to look like? Will all players be off campus, limiting our access? Will they follow them away? Will they follow coaches on the recruiting trail?
I don't think there's a set rule. There's probably some voting and some nominating and some eligibility requirements, but I'm 99% sure Kelly can declare "Joe Schmidt is a captain, deal with it." He may have been voted into the role but I think it's a mistake to assume so.Is that how the team does it? Serious question. I always thought BK just picks them.
Kelly and BVG have cursed several times.
Wasn't it during the week of the GT game where he was talking about being an underdog at home and Kelly says, "Are you sh**ting me?"
Stop the talk about Joe. He may not be the best player, but he's giving it his all. It's not his fault if the coaches use him over Morgan. I think Joe is sincere. Maybe he's trying a little too hard, but I think it's genuine. He's talked more than once about this being his last hurrah. I think he just wants to get the max out of this last season and enjoy it as much as possible. Jaylon certainly seemed interested when they were talking. Joe eating with his mom and Tranquill is not a problem. There were about another 60 guys who weren't at the little camp fire get together.
Love Max's hair.
Love that Corey sees there is life after football.
Love that Sheldon has taken Terry Jillery under his wings (JT gets ND).
Much admiration for Denbrock. Great with the kids.
Chris Brown can yap all he wants. I like it.
I liked the conversation between BK & KVR while at practice.

Running back C.J. Prosise and wide receiver Chris Brown were locked in an intense game of video soccer. Just then, the Showtime camera crew following Notre Dame players this season started talking to Prosise. He wasn't happy.
"Of course, while I'm answering questions, Chris scores," Prosise said. "So I'm like, 'Dude, I can't talk anymore!'"
Too late. Brown won 1-0 and taunted his roomie.
The headaches have become part of the deal for players-turned-reality-stars for the cable series, "A Season with Notre Dame." The show is similar to HBO's "Hard Knocks," which followed a single NFL team through training camp.
Fighting Irish players have had to adjust to a crew of about dozen following them daily. That number grows to more than 50 on game days. The 11th-ranked Irish (6-1) say it was awkward at first.
Even for coach Brian Kelly. He says he has been in the bathroom and realized he's still miked.
Still, they are enjoying the attention.
"At times it can be a little much, a little bit of a hassle. But it's kind of cool to say you have your own TV show and you're part of a TV show," Prosise said.
Showtime has shown Notre Dame in a positive light, though Kelly wasn't happy it aired a teaser with him telling the team that tackle Ronnie Stanley was not able to accept being a captain. The scene wasn't included in the program. Stanley later revealed the reason he couldn't was because of parking violations.
Stephen Espinoza, executive vice president of Showtime sports, said the network apologized. He also said Showtime works with the university on story lines and putting the show together and retains control over program content. The school is aware of what scenes Showtime plans to use, but doesn't see the full program until it airs. Espinoza said the network also understands it is about student-athletes and doesn't want to embarrass anyone. Players had the option of signing releases and can ask not to be filmed when they choose.
"This show can only be produced in collaboration," he said.
Viewers have seen some lows, including the raw emotion of quarterback Malik Zaire after he broke his ankle to end his season.
They saw the stress of players studying for midterms while preparing for rival USC.
But they also saw the team being rewarded with a meal of porterhouse steaks and crab legs after beating Navy.
"I like crab legs," linebacker Joe Schmidt says. "It tastes like victory."
They've eavesdropped on Kelly's impassioned locker room speeches, telling players before USC: "If you want something bad enough, you've got to go take it. That's how we're playing this game. We're gonna go get it."
The Irish won 41-31.
Viewers also have seen the close relationship between defensive captain Sheldon Day and freshman Jerry Tillery, including Day hazing Tillery a bit by ordering him to wear his helmet during a preseason practice when going to a portable toilet.
"To go to the bathroom?" Tillery asks.
Viewers have watched linebacker Jaylon Smith bowling, receiver Corey Robinson playing the ukulele and singing and Day and cornerback Cole Luke coaching a women's flag-football team. During their off week, crews accompanied some players home.
Espinoza said the network is pleased with the weekly 30-minute show.
"There's been a lot of drama within the program. Some unexpected injuries, some come-from-behind wins. We couldn't have scripted it any better," he said.
The first three episodes averaged 663,000 viewers across all platforms. That compares favorably with Showtime's most popular sports series, "Inside the NFL," and is the third-most watched program through its streaming service, Espinoza said.
The program has followed the emergence of quarterback DeShone Kizer, showing how dorm mates covered his door with sticky notes of support, saying: "You're a stud," "You seem like a nice person," "Wow," and "Thank you."
It aired a talk Kizer had with fellow student Jac Collinsworth, whose brother, Austin, was a Notre Dame safety and whose father, Cris, was a three-time Pro Bowl receiver and now an NBC analyst. Kizer talks about how dramatically his life changed after Zaire was injured.
"There's no transition at all. Coach Kelly looks at me differently. He just expects me to be the starting quarterback at Notre Dame. Everyone just expects it. No one really understands ... All of a sudden I have all this pressure and all this obligation that you have that I never really prepared myself for," he said.
KeiVarae Russell admits to Kelly before the USC game that one reason he's been struggling after being suspended from school last season was he hasn't been working hard enough at practice.
"What, were you being a prima donna?" Kelly asks.
"Yeah, kinda," Russell replies.
"Seriously? Kelly asks.
"Yes sir," Russell responds.
"Get the hell out of here," Kelly says.
Russell had an interception against USC and deflected another pass that was intercepted by safety Max Redfield.
Miked up conversations also turn out to be amusing.
"I wonder if the pope watches our games," Schmidt says to roommate Jarret Grace.
"I know," Grace responds.
"He should, if he doesn't," Schmidt says.
Stanley said despite being disappointed that the reason he was not allowed to be captain got out, he thinks the show is a good idea.
Espinoza said Showtime is interested in doing another show next year with Notre Dame or another school.
"What we're looking for is a top-notch program with compelling stories and a really interesting coaching staff," he said.
Is that how the team does it? Serious question. I always thought BK just picks them.
I saw it in a video sometime this season that the players voted the captains but I haven't been able to find it
Edit: Brian Kelly names five team captains for 2015 team | Inside the Irish
10 were approved by coaches and university and 5 were voted captains by the players
Last week, Brian Kelly mentioned that ten candidates were approved by the faculty board for the vote, a large group that says quite a bit about the leadership on this team.
From the above article:
Now I'd REALLY like to know the story about Ronnie Stanley not being able to accept his captaincy. According to this, Stanley was approved the faculty board. So what happened in the (presumably) short time between the approval, and the results of the vote? Or was it a team issue vice a University issue?

From that wall of words I posted:
So how was he cleared by the faculty board, if he was in trouble for parking? I'm just not sure that I'm buying it.
Prior to the show, I was indifferent on my feeling towards Denbrock. Now? I really like him. His conversation with CRob at the Clemson games was really great and obviously CRob responded well.
BK congratulating CRob after the TD is one of my favorite scenes so far. BK was really genuine in that conversation and you could see the pride he had for Corey redeeming himself on what has been a subpar year for him.
I agree. I like this coaching staff so much more after watching the show. I never knew much about Denbrock but love the way he interacts with the players. The only exception is BVG. He seems like a smug ass who only yells. Haven't seen him teach anything.

I'm actually surprised how little yelling and condescension there is in this show. I spent 9 years inside D I locker rooms and it was never this cordial. BVG would have been in the top 5 nicest coaches I was ever associated with. Times they are a changin'.
Think my favorite part was the look Denbrock gave to Fuller after his TD against Southern Cal. Somehow that look said 1000 words....kid is such a baller.

Oh also gotta say I lost little bit of my infatuation with Terry Jillery when I saw him rocking a Hillary 2016 shirt.....yuck
I really hope they continue this series with Notre Dame and don't move onto another university. I know I definitely wouldn't be watching if this was a show about Cal or LSU or some other random school.
It's going to suck when they go to a different school because 1) version 2.0 is likely to be improved, and 2) they'll paint kids at other schools as student-athletes (instead of just athletes) and Notre Dame won't look as unique. Every program can find six guys who know where the library is, they'll get the air time.I really hope they continue this series with Notre Dame and don't move onto another university. Didn't mean to get the Joe Schmidt hate train going lol. I just know that I had teammates like him, obviously not to the same scale, but as good of guys as people like him may be in the heat of the moment they can rub a lot of people the wrong way.
Also, how can you hate Breezy?? My favorite quote of the whole show is after Prosise scored a TD in one of the early games when he got in his face and went, "You're a savage man." The way he said it with the combo his Chris Rock-esque voice had me cracking up.
