Also why can't Day get the D-linemen lined up correctly? That would just leave the 3 LBs and Smith should be able to handle that.

The d-line is basically blinded by being in the trenches, they are not in a position to see formation changes and what not to make proper adjustments.

Perfect world Max would make the calls. Safety's should be making the checks down to linbackers, the backers to d-line.

hints another reason why, at times, are secondary looks like hell and totally out of position. i'm not sure if Joe is able to relay info to the secondary and d-line in a timely fashion, given noise and a wide variety of factors.

Actually perfect world, we stop with the confusing s*** and just play some damn football and let Joe be in on goaline and short yardage. He can be on Kick off too. If he's not already.

I think a lot of the talk of Joe lining players up is blown out of proportion. He's constantly communicating and making calls out there but that doesn't necessarily mean someone else doesn't know their responsibility. It's the job of almost every mike in the country to communicate certain things to the defense, i.e., offensive formation, strong side of the formation, whether he sees pass or run, whether he sees an oddity, whether they'll keep a blitz on or if they'll check out, etc.

So if you see him in Jaylon's ear about something, he may not be telling him what to do. He may just be telling him, hey, Jaylon, they're lined up in trips...watch bubble to your side.

If you see him in Onawalu's ear about something, it may be something simple like the formation is even and I want you on this side of the field b/c it's the short side.

He has to communicate with defensive linemen to check off blitzes. So if he's slapping Day on the ass, he may be signaling, don't slant the gap, we're not blitzing.

If he keeps the blitz on, he may have to communicate which gap he is going through so the linemen knows which gap is theirs to maintain.

He's supposed to dictate to people on the field so everyone is on the same page. It doesn't necessarily follow that the rest of them are idiots. They're just doing what they're supposed to do - listen to their mike.

So put a guy who cant physically handle Navys players on short yardage situations? Listed at 225, i guarantee you he is 218 and looks it. This guy is special teams only.

Joe seems like a great guy but if he's our best option at the position...then the entire coaching staff should be fired.

Hey, you don't have to convince me. I'm just being nice by saying put him on short yardage. He's best in between the tackles, he's not good at it, but in terms of his ability it's what he's best at. So I was going to let him do that. But hey, he can ride the pine for all I care

All I know if I am going to flip my couch over and burn it when I see him getting smoked by a running back in the open field.

Well maybe they make more mental errors in practice. But so did Malik. So do lots of other guys that still get significant PT. I'm advocating that they give someone else a shot. Not saying that I know for a fact that it will turn out favorably.

That's fair enough, but your livelihood doesn't depend on the outcome, so it is a lot easier for you to advocate for "trying someone else". The coaches have to play the odds.

Does anyone besides me think of it this way - what happens if we get to the playoffs and square off with LSU or Bama or OSU in round one? I don't care what happened last year with LSU (when we beat them without Schmidt ;)), this is a whole new team.

Do you honestly believe we'd stand a chance against them with their power running attack? I think we'd get ran over. If our goal is the playoffs, one other reason to try something else would be so we have a chance if we actually reach our goal. What if Morgan gets 15 snaps a game, continues to look good, puts heat on Joe to try to improve, and gets experience along the way, and we find out we have a thumper that we can actually play against power teams (hello, Stanford).

I don't know about tOSU or Bama (Between those two I'd rather have tOSU since they don't seem as hungry this season), but I'd be less worried about LSU personally. Are they a better team this year than when we faced them in the bowl game? Yes, but even with our injuries again this year I think we're better than we were too. We faced Fournette before, and we won. Fournette is their entire offense, they rank 123rd in the country in passing, and our run defense is definitely stronger than our pass defense. We won with a QB getting his first start, and with a rag-tag defense. We gave up some very big plays, but ultimately Kelly kept it pretty simple and cool while Les was calling trick plays just to stay in the game. LSU was playing like they were the underdog, and it's because they were getting beat in the trenches. I think it would be another tough game, but I'd like our chances against them again even without Zaire who was awesome in that game.

Stop it guys. The coaches know better.

That's a bit unfair but I'll accept it. It helps really drive that stake.

To be fair, I'd like to see us try out other players but I'm not going on a campaign about it because I defer to the coaches when I have a difference of opinion. You just assume you're right because it can't possibly get any worse, amirite?

If Im USC, Im running and passing right at Joe all game long

If I'm Wingman Ray, I stop posting on this forum and find a team I can get behind.

so...when did he suffer a concussion?

I think it was against GT on the last onside kick. He basically turned himself into a human missile and used his head to pick off one of the GT defenders. It looked pretty brutal when watching it back.

Side note, because of the respect I have for him as a person its really hard to watch him on the Showtime series and his expectations that he puts on himself. I commend him for striving for greatness but I do think some reality has to set in that he just can't play, physically, at a high enough level. Whether thats just right now or ever.

Coach asked Schmidt why he should ever go out on the field over the other players, Joe said he would play perfect. He hasn't been perfect lately, and I think it's showed. He needs to get back to where he was, or it's time to slowly insert some other players.

It must be a trust issue with D staff and other MLBs.

While I agree Joe's play has been sub par and would like to see more of something else.

There has got to be a reason we keep rolling Schmidt out.

Are the other MLBs doing the "other things" it takes to start for this D?

Maybe Joe is only one that can line the D up because he's only one preparing properly to do so?

I can't imagine it can be too many other things.

Schmidt had a bounce back game? I'm starting to think this guy just thinks his shit don't stink. At least he always knows where the cameras are

Enough is enough. Schmidt has earned his roster and starting spot. That decision is made by experts who are paid to make those very decisions, Kelly and BVG. Btw-their paycheck, their living, is based on those decisions.

Decisions posters make? Do I watch the game on standard or in high def? Do I order pizza or ask the wife to make sausage and peppers. Do I post 50 times today or start a BS thread to obtain vbucks? Do I attempt to shit on a player who has done more for the school I root for than they ever will? Do I attempt to glorify my standing on an internet message board?

Just ridiculous. Keep doing your best Joe and f@ck everyone else.

No one's saying anything to Joe. We're just a bunch of overly-obsessed dudes flapping our gums about what we see on TV. That's part of the fun of sports as entertainment ("armchair quarterbacking ") and there's nothing wrong with it. Now, if someone were berating the student athlete to his face, that'd be different and crossing a line. We're not doing that. We're just bitching about a player in the abstract on a football board because from our limited perspective, he's playing poorly. While it's true that the coaches get paid to make those decisions, our opinion matters precisely dick all to those decisions, so our criticism exists entirely in its own masturbatory echo chamber, as harmless as any other meaningless sports banter. Nor does this mean we don't support Joe or the team. I think everyone would be jazzed to see Joe channel Manti. We all want the team to play their best and criticizing poor play in a harmless forum is both a valid and trivial means of expressing that.

I like Joe Schmidt. We all saw what happened to the defense last year when he got hurt. But I've also seen Nyles Morgan and Tevon Coney play a little football and they do not appear to suck. We could at least mix them in there more.

The bashing, at least to me, seems to be all over the board and it gets old. I understand as fans we are allowed to gripe and moan. In this instance, I feel this horse has been beaten to a bloody pulp. Much like everyone gets to say something, I get the opportunity too. I am serious.

You know what else gets old? Missed tackles get old. Our MLB getting knocked back on blocks gets old. Not being in a position to make tackle in the 1st place because of a lack of speed gets old. That all gets old, too.
