Sorry to see this happen to such a game player, particularly on senior day where I know he wanted to send his brother out on a high. Stay strong Nick, get well, see you on the field soon.

Has a 'significant' knee injury and is done for the year, per BK.

Depending on what "significant" means, I might be a little worried that he won't be able to play next year or at least not able to play at the beginning of the year.

If that is true I think our O-line might be

Elmer - Hanratty - Hegarty - Lombard - Stanley

Damn. All that good luck from last year has really drained our roster this year. Get better, Nicky, we'll need you next year.

i'm suddenly a bit worried about the timing of this injury...idk how well big men rehab knee injuries these days compared to the skilled position athletes

hope surgery goes well and he's able to get back healthy b/c he really had a great year after being thrust into a difficult position and we seemingly didn't miss a beat up front from last year.

heard a stat from mayock that we're like in the top 5 in the nation in sacks given up....with our extreme lack of mobility at the QB position that's huge props to the OL and coach Hiestand.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Bivin push for playing time next year at Center or Guard.

Sucks. Also sucks that this happened heading into the toughest pass rush we'll face all season. Matt Hegarty's gonna have to step up this week.

I would think it would be more likely at center with Hegarty if Martin can't begin the season. Hanratty has played very well at that right guard position when spelling Elmer, and Lombard should be back and would have first crack at a starting job.

Elmer - Hanratty - Bivin/Hegarty/Martin - Lombard - Stanley

Either way though, the o-line competition is going to be awesome and I have full faith that Kelly/Heistand are going to get the best combo of the best 5 possible out there. The 2014 o-line should be pretty good with the veterans back and the sophmores coming on. The 2015-2016 lines could be down-right frightening though.

Nick Martin awarded Rimington Ribbon for Outstanding Participation

Says Boomer Esiason, "After much deliberation, we concluded that Nick Martin is indeed a starting C on a Division I CFB team, so he's clearly deserving of this honor."

Irish A-to-Z: Nick Martin | Inside the Irish

FUTURE POTENTIAL

Those in the NFL prognosticating world are keeping their eyes on Martin. And even though last season he didn’t play at his best, they still believe Martin has the type of ceiling that usually comes with a lengthy NFL caree.

Where he gets drafted will likely depend on how well—and how healthy—Martin plays in 2015. Because there’s all the pedigree you’d want in an interior offensive lineman. Throw in the performance of his brother at the next level and Martin has the chance to be a Chris Watt type, a mid-round pick that should be among the most consistent performers on the roster.

CRYSTAL BALL

I’m fascinated by Martin’s place on the roster. The returning captain isn’t the best lineman on the roster, with Ronnie Stanley taking that honor. Yet the ‘C’ on the jersey indicated that Martin was the team’s most respected—and while his performance in 2014 didn’t grade out at the top of the heap, the fact that he played through multiple maladies likely only made him more admirable in the linemen’s meeting room.

But respect from your peers won’t turn the Irish offensive line into the unit that it has the potential to be. And after Matt Hegarty walked away from South Bend because the coaching staff wasn’t moving Martin from center, it’s essential that Martin makes that decision look like a smart one by Harry Hiestand and Brian Kelly, and plays at an elite level in 2015.

Martin is a fifth-year player. He’s always been a mature one, who saw elite leadership by his brother when he took charge of the Irish offensive line in his final seasons. So if Martin is fully healthy, it shouldn’t matter if Stanley is the lineman most likely to be a Top 10 pick after the season, Martin is a team leader who should also be an elite performer.

Surprisingly to me Todd McShay and Scout Inc. have Nick Martin as the 5th best OL draft eligible prospect. Could be looking at the first center off the board and a second round pick. Not bad for an undersized unathletic 3 star recruit.

Watching Nick play healthy last night was fantastic. I said it in another thread, but whomever passes on Nick in the first round will have a decade of regrets. Best center in college and its not close

When you watch a game where are your eyes? I tend to watch the ball so besides upfield blocks, I miss team play. How do you watch the lines, I would like to be able to see more of the the game.

Pat Kirwin explains it far better than I could , but i would highly recommend his book "Take your eyes off the ball" It is a short read.

I see things better and more objectively the second watch the next day too.
