Discuss what? That Urban Meyer punishes players differently than Coach Kelly? I think we all knew that.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk

I'm pretty sure that that is one of the things that Kelly mentioned about how ND is different. I don't think Kelly gets to decide on punishment for players, other than for minor team infractions. I'm pretty sure that the University decides what punishment the guys will get.

Bosa gets 1 game for Marijuana and Academics.

Greg Bryant gets 4 games for Marijuana.

I try and not jump into discussions when it comes to Jalin Marshall as he is a family friend, but Bosa and Marshall are for academics only.

I can tell you that Jalin's parents are not happy with the way the announcement was made. Lumping all four players together with the tag of marijuana and academics has not made for a very happy Marshall household.

Maybe they should worry about their own issues, like convincing young Jalin to take his studies more seriously?

Meh, true, but I can definitely see the point of not wanting to get lumped in with weed considering the stigma attached to it.

Guess you can argue what is worse though.

I'd rather my college kid get a slap on the wrist for weed than to see them being punished for poor academic performance.

I don't partake myself, but I also know that it's not the Great Evil that it is made out to be in the classroom and in society.

depending on age of user and frequency of usage, that is debatable.

It's a bit different for a prospect like Bosa. We can debate which is worse but I think NFL scouts/teams are more likely to scrutinize a "drug issue" rather than an "academic issue". The same could probably be said about future endorsement deals.

I'd be irate if I was the parents - at my child for being a lazy ass and at the institution for not clearly explaining the situation.

I have some close friends and plenty of acquaintances that were/are frequent recreational users through college, and so far they've all turned out like normal, average, working Americans. Maybe they've all just been lucky though.

NFL scouts/coaches might make a larger asterisk next to "weed" than they would "academic issue," but in the end, both asterisks mean nothing to them. They just want ball players. So I don't think a prospect like Bosa really is affected one way or the other. But I could be completely wrong. I'm sure it also depends on the individual NFL team, as well.

My initial point, though, was that I know the risks of weed. In my non-study based, life-experience-anchored opinion, weed is less destructive than alcohol. As long as my kid is working hard in the classroom, I could live knowing they smoke on the occasional Saturday night with their friends. But if they aren't taking care of business in the classroom? I'd be upset.

You can read this and many other reports. I prefer this one because it largely admits that there are many pieces to this puzzle and this study is merely a piece and does provide a balanced opinion.

The overwhelming preponderance of scientific evidence provides adequate rationale
for public policies that deter, delay and detect child and adolescent marijuana use. Our
goal should be to limit access to marijuana for those under 21, to keep youth engaged in
school, to provide schools with resources to identify and help students using marijuana,
to construct a community-based intervention system to evaluate youth under 18 years of
age who are using marijuana problematically and to provide them educational and
constructive interventions, and to provide professional treatment to youth who have
become dependent on marijuana. Deter, delay and detect.

Big10 doing Big10 things
Ohio State football: Joey Bosa wins Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year | cleveland.com

Bosa was named the Big Ten's Defensive Lineman of the Year on Monday night, repeating his honor from 2014. The overall Defensive Player of the Year went to Penn State's Carl Nassib, who is also a defensive end.

That doesn't make sense, but when it comes to Big Ten awards it's not exactly surprising.

Bosa won the award over three defensive linemen who joined him on the All-Big Ten first team - Nassib, Michigan State's Shilique Calhoun and Maryland's Yannick Ngakoue. All three had far more sacks than Bosa, who ended the regular-season with five. Nassib has 15.5, Ngakoue has 13 and Calhoun had 8.5.

So Bosa went one for two. Last year he won both, earning the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and Defensive Lineman of the Year awards. Through 12 games last year, Bosa had 13.5 sacks and 20 tackles for loss. This year, he has five sacks and 16 tackles for loss.

Those sacks tie him for 18th in the Big Ten, while the tackles for loss are fourth and second among defensive linemen, only behind the 19.5 of Nassib.

I guess PSU's scheme has Nassib dropping into coverage a lot ;)

So he's not a social butterfly..

Also sounded like whatever he was doing was not going to help him get to the NFL, so he made a business decision that was going to help him achieve his dream. Maybe there could have been other ways about doing that, but he made his choice and it paid off.

I think that the author chose the most cynical and dramatic take on Bosa's situation. Another take is that here is a conscientious young man with strong family support who chose to stay away from the "distractions" that immature peers present, and focus on his chosen path in life. If he were a poet, or scientist, or aspiring doctor, people would be lauding his decision to focus so sharply on his dream. I do hope, though, that he doesn't continue to isolate himself after school. He is going to have to develop social skills, as well as pass rushing skills, if he wants to be an All-Pro in life.

JJ Watt did similiar things even when he was a millionaire after signing his rookie deal he still spent his offseasons sleeping on a mattress in a friend's basement and he would just work out every day.

Still trying to figure out how Bosa's lifestyle is "everything wrong with College Football". I mean I get that Slate is a shit news organization, but still. They said that he has to be in there to avoid getting red flags that hurt draft stock.... He could also just be a nice humble guy and live a normal life, it worked out for Mariota

I tend to agree. Nearly every player every year manages to live a college life and not get into the kind of trouble that could hurt their draft stock. It sounds like Joey (and more importantly, his family) knew that he had the potential to do stupider things than he'd already done and took steps to ensure that didn't happen.

Probably blame to share on both sides, but this isn't the first 1st round pick that didn't have a contract in place at the start of camp. Get used to it mom. Mom also doesn't realize that the name Bosa doesn't carry the same clout as Manning.
