Notre Dame does seem like they are getting some breaks this year so far. Teams are losing top talent to injuries, suspensions, or for just dumb reasons...

Feeling good about the upcoming season

The Pitt game would still make me nervous even if they were down to a towel boy at QB.

Steelhead hit it on the head. Every year people say "Pitt sucks, we'll crush them." It doesn't really happen. Look at our meetings over the last several years:

2014: No game
2013: Pitt 28 - ND 21
2012: ND 29 - Pitt 26 OT
2011: ND 15 - Pitt 12
2010: ND 23 - Pitt 17
2009: Pitt 27 - ND 22
2008: Pitt 36 - ND 33 OT
2007: No game, but it would have been a loss
2006: No game
2005: ND 42 - Pitt 21
2004: Pitt 41 - ND 38
2003: ND 20 - Pitt 14
2002: ND 14 - Pitt 6

Among all those meetings, only once was the score a win for us with more than a touchdown advantage, 2005. That '05 game was the exception, not the rule. That game was an offensive explosion that put the Shark and Brady on the map, in conjunction with other big playmakers like Stovall and McKnight, Pitt had no idea what was coming. History says this game will be close, whether Pitt sucks or not. I sincerely hope we stop a mudhole in them, but these guys unfortunately play their asses off when we face them (Or they play pretty well, we play like crap, and/or the refs give them some help. Some combination there).

Their defense should be better with the new coach. We need to make these games blow outs to help the softer schedule.

Taking it a step further, they've only been embarrassed twice in the last two seasons, a 41-13 loss to FSU in 2013 (Jameis's coming out party), and a 56-28 drubbing at the hands of GT last year.

FSU was undefeated national champs in 2013, and GT Orange Bowl champs last year. Pitt is functionally frisky, and always motivated for this game.

Their defensive roster reminds me of the Holtz defenses, minus the studs he would bring in. A lot of scrappy, hard-nosed 2-3 star kids from New Jersey and Pennsylvania that bring a lunch pail every game.

This game has sucked for a while. I'd love to see some separation start this year. Pitt is always frisky and up for the game, and is typically well coached. I think they've also benefited from PSU's woes of late. One has to think they will decline a bit as PSU rises again.

Part of the problem is Pitt is another Navy in terms of national perception,… it’s a ‘garbage cupcake game’ that holds pretty much zero credibility in terms of resume building and SOS… which of course would be all well and fine, every school has those games from time to time… except Pitt, like Navy, is much better than they are ever given credit for… I would much rather play a directional school and get that real cup cake game while not really losing much in terms of national respect in terms of scheduling...

But then there's programs like Purdue that like to be a pain in the ass too even when they suck.

Eureka: I just caught us making excuses. ND should wipe the floor with Pitt, or at least win walking away. No more excuses.

I'd give us a bit of room with Pitt, but teams like PU, and NW, we should have throttled in recent years.

I hope we dominate Pitt this year. It is one of about a half-dozen things we can do to have an exceptional season!

Especially after reading all the preview articles, my strong feeling is that Pitt, especially when it comes in the season, will be a great litmus test for the growth of ND's defense under BVG, and the integration of the new position coaches. (Each group will have a different coach, if not one new to ND, correct?)

I'm planning on it as long as my Pitt buddy doesn't back out. We took our kids two years ago and had a blast except for the fact we lost.

My son still says Let's Go Pitt any time Sweet Caroline is on the radio. It was motivation to take him to ND and show him how its really done.

They just beat Georgia Tech 31-28 to improve to 5-1. Their one loss was by 3 points to 7-0 Iowa.

They play at Cuse and vs. UNC before the ND game. Would be huge if they were 7-1 and ranked #20 or so for our game.
