This is what I've been told.

As I stated a couple times in this thread, a mutual friend told me he was struggling all last year with grades but eventually got them up but it was definitely tough for him.

I wasn't sure how close my buddy was with him but he tipped me off the day after he announced he'd transfer that he was in talks with Michigan so I have decided to trust him from now on when it comes to Jhonny haha. Also said he was talking to Miami (FL) and a JUCO in Mississippi. And since then I've heard Toledo and Missouri also. I believe he was committed to both Toledo and Mizzou before he ultimately chose ND.

Whatever school Jhonny chooses...I hope the best for him. He seems like a great kid despite a childhood that could have doomed a lot of kids...from everything I've been told.

If that's all accurate Michigan makes a lot of sense. It's still pretty close to home, which seems important to him. He'll get a good degree (I know, I know), without quite the classroom rigors of Notre Dame. And if he has dreams of big-time football he can certainly achieve them there. Too bad for us, but probably a better path for Jhonny than Toledo or some JUCO in Mississippi.

Certainly it's not an academics issue. Michigan is the Harvard of the West! ~ND Nation circa 1880

Really wish he could have continued to tough it out and stay at ND. That said, I wish him the best. But F... Michigan.

what was the issue then?

Maybe he hates South Bend. Maybe he's not a fan of the Catholic culture on campus. Maybe he doesn't like gold or green. Maybe he's not making as many friends as he thought he would. Maybe he can't describe it very well, but he knows that he doesn't "fit."

if it was any of those reasons would it not be common knowledge. Why all the secrecy?

Not sure I'd want to get into it. Would you want to tell people that you don't like their city or religion? I know that I'm speculating in order to say that we shouldn't speculate...which is a bit goofy. I just think we should let it go and wish him well.

I could see him feeling that way about Catholicism, as he went to a public school. But Berrien Springs is practically a suburb of South Bend. His high school is literally 25 miles away from Notre Dame's campus. So if he disliked South Bend, he should have already known that before showing up.

No info. Just saying that there are lots of reasons to think you're a good "fit" in a place or not.

There is a poster at ISD who is very well connected at ND and knows a ton of stuff before the media does (for example, he knew before anyone else that James Onwualu was moving to defense. TP is my witness on this...the guy is beyond legit). I've heard some crazy stuff from him at ISD lunches and it always comes true. Anyway, when this all went down and people were typically overblowing it and losing their minds, he posted a simple,

"Has anyone ever thought that maybe it wasn't his choice?"

That was his way of telling everyone that JW was about to be kicked out so ND allowed him to make it look like he wanted to transfer. Mike Frank basically confirmed that this morning.

There's a great story about JW I heard at the spring game that I'd love to tell you guys over a beer. When I heard it, I knew he wasn't long for ND. "Not a great fit" is an accurate statement. Not wishing him the worst...I actually won't mind if he ends up at Michigan, as it doesn't bother me that a kid who was 3rd string at the spring practice I was at (behind pass rushers that ND fans keep saying aren't very good) would end up at our rivals. He MIGHT turn out to be a stud, but he's far from it right now (looks like Tarzan, plays like Jon Ryan) and we need the scholarship.

if anybody wanna PM me the story that'd be swell but no biggie, otherwise my memories of JW at ND will be consigned to the X Files with Davonte Neal :D

Will not be transfering to Michigan. Many believe due to scholarship limit reaching maximum density on the UM squad.

People need to know that once JW joined Davonte Neal in the ND X-Files there is no going back

Is the reason something we (and everyone else) will be well acquainted with because of its magnitude when the details surface?

As an in state kid, wouldn't you pay the one year out of pocket and go PWO if they were gonna pick up the next 3 years???

If he ends up at a Michigan Directional, I call BS.

he needs to head to toledo. it'll give him an opportunity within driving distance from home. the MAC competition will be decent. they'll coach him up. might make something of himself football wise. can still obtain a degree from a legit school.

regardless-i have no idea what's best for him, only he can decide.

best of luck JW

Plus Toledo is poised to go on a tear through the MAC in the near future. They could be Top 25 this year.
