I know I'm gonna catch crap for this, but I was hoping this bump would be transfer-related. Flame on.

Ha. I was hoping the article would say he miraculously gained 15 pounds this spring and was set to compete for playing time in the fall ... but I was kind of expecting it to be transfer-related, I'll be honest.

But it looks like the status quo reigns. Very unfortunate. Let's hope he can stay injury free and put some pounds on.

I understand your sentiment, but Heuerman exemplifies what the 40 year decision is all about. He probably could have gone to a MAC school and started, but he's never going to play in the NFL. He has been loyal to the program and honored his commitment. He should stay at Notre Dame, get his degree, and reap the benefits of his 40 year decision. If he wants to play a year of football, he should wait until he gets his Notre Dame degree and then move on to wherever his best opportunities may be for a 5th year and a graduate degree.

haha.... I don't think you know how Heuerman operates. I doubt any of the thoughts you brought up are even on his radar. I'll just leave it at that.

Yeah, I think Heuerman fell in love with ND during the recruiting process, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him stay at ND and get his degree, but I don't think his decision-making vis-a-vis his college football career was quite as Eddy described it. I never really thought of him as a hardcore 40-year-decision, academics-first kid.

CRYSTAL BALL

Not playing in his first two seasons isn’t necessarily a death blow, but Heuerman’s inability to gain weight or stay healthy are two major ingredients when you’re trying to project the football future of a tight end. Heuerman is a very good athlete who has hands and an ability to run well. But so does the rest of Scott Booker’s depth chart.

I won’t be the first one to suggest that Notre Dame’s staff should kick the tires on Heuerman the defensive end, a position he was dominant at as a senior in high school. Without too many natural pass rushers on the roster, a 230-pounder coming flying off the edge could be a complimentary part of the Irish defense—something that’s hard to see if Heuerman stays at either tight end or jumbo receiver.

Wouldn't mind seeing them try this out. Could be a way to salvage his remaining eligibility.

At this point any kind of positive attempts to get him involved should be welcomed. Would love to see them give him a shot at DE.

If he can't bulk up enough for TE idk how he is going to get to 250+ for DE.

He doesn't need to be 250 to be a situational speed rusher, which is probably his ceiling at this point...

Now, does he have the skills to even be a viable option as a speed rusher after having not done it in a while? Who knows.

But he needs the motivation. Aside from weight issues, he hasn't shown much of that his entire career.

I would tend to agree. If he was "all in", I think he would have beefed up by now.

Agreed. Hill is only 230 pounds. Just a matter of if this kid cares enough or not.

He has also had bad luck with injuries too. Is it possible that the injuries killed his motivation more than anything?

Bruce Irvin at WVU: defensive end, 6'3", 230 --- you can do it at AA levels --- our guy probably doesn't "want it" as bad as Irvin did, but, just like that wildman Nikita Whitlock played NG at Wake at 250, college guys violate the bigger-is-better prejudice all the time.

Let him try it if he wants to.

As to his future at TE, two words: Alize Jones.

Vic Beasley of Clemson was a 2 year consensus All-American DE (2013 and 2014), and he was 6'-2"or3", 235.

And a first round pick as well. Mike could probably do it if he wanted to, but again he will have some competition to hitting the field there. We need to find a way to use him, but I'm just not seeing it right now.

Interesting point.

But I think Hounshell was more an issue of finding a position with less wear and tear after his surgical repair. And I think that conversation about Heuerman was more conjecture on how to find a way to the field!

I thought Heuerman was taking a medical?

What kind of injury would cause him to take a medical? Wish the kid best of luck but I'm not sure he would have seen the field much, this creates another scholarship for this year's class.

He had shoulder problems, IIRC.

Deeb is the one that came out of left-field for me. What were his injury problems?
