I don't know how I missed this. I guess I should've known a new album was coming after "I" was released.

I enjoy Kendrick thoroughly, though I discovered him in the completely mainstream way (no hipster story here) after his verse on "Control" blew up.

I retroactively discovered/loved "good kid, m.A.A.d city," as well as some of his stuff before that.

I thrive on Kendrick Spotify.

If u liked GKMC this is um... Different. Be prepared.

Ouch I got called sad by some middle aged dude over the internet. I think I'll live. U don't like the genre than the music suggestions thread is always available to listen to Bob Dylan and some shit like that with dshans.

NDPhilly, you're going to be catching the same crap from younger kids once you get a few more miles on you. People have a tendency to listen to music they grew up with. Doesn't make it right or wrong. I listen a lot of stuff from the 60's & 70's, but I jump around. My oldest kids got me into alternative and my youngest had me listening to rap. My parents got me into some Big Band. It's all in perspective.

BTW........No one will ever top Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer.

This chiding would make sense if Philly was in the other music threads making fun of old music, but he's not. He started a thread about rap and is getting sh*t for liking rap.

Damn tough crowd today....to be honest i do like the colab kendrick/j cole cd....the reason i typically will like a rap song is if the beat or flow gets me bobbing..really the only time im listening to music is when im at the gym or at work otherwise when driving i have sports radio( have 4 kids and don't want them hearing curse words)

meek mill, ross, jay, beastie boys, wiz---these are what i mostly listen too

haha I'm just messing with you. Kendrick is my personal favorite as I think good kid maad city is probably the best album I've heard in years. I love J. cole's new album, meek mill is great, hov for sure, I like Kanye when he actually raps (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is up there with GKMC), Freddie Gibbs is starting to do well, Eminem will always be my favorite, T.I., etc. I completely understand the people who like the beat more than the lyrics, especially with kids around haha

Yeah yeah screwed up was thinking dreamchasers 2

Shit When did that Collaborative Chaos with J Cole and Kendrick drop. Arguably my two favorite rappers right now.

Is this Collaborative Chaos thing just a mixup of J.Cole and Kendrick or did they actually collaborate and release this?

I was rolling when I saw this - they matched Earl up perfectly haha. Also, one of my favorite childhood shows, I just barely remembered the show, but I went back and watched some of the episodes a few years ago

The extent of my liking rap extends to Digital Underground Outkast, the Roots. Talib Kwali, Mos Def and Common. Other than that I am meh about the genre.

Once I started playing music though my tastes and appreciation changed drastically.

That being said... Good thread and all you old timers go back inside and stop harassing the youngins. ;)

Random but since this thread just got started:

I listened to The Slim Shady LP for the first time in a long time yesterday while I was on the road. It's such an insanely good album for a first commercial release. Even with tons of 90's references in the lyrics the album hasn't aged a bit. Eminem has an insane amount of venom in his voice and delivery and Dre's beats are still filthy compared to most contemporary mainstream rap.

I'll be honest, I grew up in the rural areas of Indiana blasting rap and thinking I could act 'hood'. I still like anything that has a mesmerizing or catchy beat but my distaste has grown for people who are incapable of putting lyrics together that don't involve gratuitous references to sex, women as objects for domination, cash > everything and self-adulation.

The philosophy that most rapper's grow up with limits their range for create subject matter and that philosophy is not one, I find, capable of being reconciled in a world where love is the penultimate thing to which our lives should be ordered if we want complete fulfillment. Not everyone has to agree with this stance and it's understandable that many who grow up in a socioeconomic situation having to fight for themselves would have a predisposition towards always gratifying their most base and instinctive desires. Even for those not born in poverty, a good number are born in households that were incapable of modeling higher ordered fulfillment, usually due to broken and estranged family relationships.

I don't intend to speak as though all hip hop artists have the above background, but I think it holds for many. I'm still waiting for that point where some truly deep artists come on the scene and are capable of pulling from philosophy, history and higher level concepts to discuss topics in our world - politics (please don't say immortal technique), religion, philosophy, etc. There are a scant few who briefly attempt to wrestle but it's rarely of any substance or, perhaps more damning, it doesn't speak to me at the level with which I grapple with these topics.

With that said, I have a worklist that cycles through a number of songs whose catchy-ness allow me to overlook some of the content. It's also good for zoning out while hammering out technical issues. I find myself lost in code and two hours will have elapsed before I look up. Between this worklist on Spotify and my Chopin station that has been slowly pruned on Pandora, I am able to hammer out some work:

Zhu - superfriends
Zhu - Faded
Zhu - Paradise awaits
Childish Gambino - IV. Sweatpants
Childish Gambino - Heartbeat
C. Gambino's - 3005
Drake - Truffle Butter
Kendrick Lamar - Swimming Pools (Drank)
Kid ink - Be Real
Drake - Energy
Carnage - I Like Tuh
A$AP Rocky - Wild for the Night
iSHi, Pusha T - Push it (great song for running or high paced activities)

First of all, i'm not "middle aged". Second of all, you are pathetically naive if you think that hip hop is the only good music being made these days.

To be fair, there isn't really any good music being made these days
Probably didn't need italics for that.

Surely you've given Lupe Fiasco a try?

I'm sure he's not quite at the level at which you grapple with those topics, as you said, but he fulfills most of the concepts and topics, at least IMO.

I have listened and I enjoyed it for a spell. I wore out his last album in under a month.

I want hip hop with Tool lyrics and I just can't find it. Speak to me in heavily veiled metaphor so I can sift through the songs for 5+ years and still appreciate the content. Sometimes, the more abstract the better, speak to our desire for love, for relating, for belonging, for holding grudges; don't hit me with prosaic cliches, use beautiful allegory.

Take a great, hypnotizing beat and tie in some ethereal background sounds, then smash me verbally with Tool and Joseph Campbell while using Jung's paradigms. I've had enough Freud for one lifetime.

Think I liked GKMC more than Pimp a butterfly just cause it had some bangers on it. King Kunta, U, Blacker the Berry, Hood Politics, and Alright are all great songs but idk if I'll play any of them near as much as I played Backseat freestyle or MAAD City off of GKMC. Think Pimp a butterfly was better produced though.

"King Kunta" is a jam, and I like the different sound of "I" on the album as opposed to the single.

I think, at least after one listen, that I'm with you though. GKMC was more of a statement, whereas this new record feels more like an experiment. The experiment is good, and great for keeping things from getting stale, but if you're trying to jam, it still seems like GKMC is the way to go.

Shocked that Kendrick didn't include either of these two songs on the album. Hoping they will be added on the deluxe addition. This album is going to take a few listens to fully grasp with no distractions going on. Love that we finally got some new Kendrick. Now just need Frank Ocean, and Kanye to drop some new albums this year!

You could give Sage Francis or Saul Williams a try. I think of them both as writers before emcees. I haven't listened to hip-hop music in many years, so I haven't kept up with their careers. Check some of the stuff from over a decade ago first if you want to give them a go.

Nas is my personal favorite rapper.

My top 5 would be (again, just my personal list)

Nas
Biggie
Tupac
Meek Mill/Kendrick are a tie for me. Meek gets me a little more hype though with songs like House Party, Burn, Dreams and Nightmares itself, and ooh kill em. GKMC is always good though.
Jay-Z is always good.

Not a huge fan of rap today. A lot of it is absolute garbage. Then again, I mostly listen to EDM and House so what do I know

I was big into the legitimately good ( and bad, I admit it) hair bands growing up, and the Aerosmith-Run DMC collaboration got me to dabble in hip hop a little here and there.

I really like RDMC, Gang Starr, EPMD, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Big Daddy Kane, and many others from that era.

IMO, when the gangster rap movement started, the music got really obscene and tacky, and the whole genre suffered. My guilty pleasure rap group is the Geto Boys though, who are about as obscene as they come.

Woah I'm from Philly and I don't even think Meek Mill is near that good haha even though half our songs at prom last year were him.

Personally think Biggie is easily the best "rapper" of all time. His flow is just insane. Tupac's flow isn't as good but his message and lyrics are better. Will be interesting to see where the general public thinks Eminem falls on this list in the coming years.
