USAAAB: WEST DAY ONE DEFENSE TOP FIVE

Josh Barajas - LB - Merrillville (In.) Andrean
The linebackers as a group were very good on the first day and Barajas probably had the best day of them all, showing great closing speed, ability to get in the backfield quickly and making plays nearly every time. He's got quick, active hands and did a good job defending the pass.

This is the most important part to me.

#10 of the stock risers from the Army bowl:

Playing in northwest Indiana Barajas really has never been tested against this level of competition, but the Notre Dame commit stacked up well in the Army Bowl. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker had a fairly quiet game with just two tackles, but was impressive with his range and athleticism all week in practice and now sets up a very interesting discussion between he and Darrin Kirkland Jr. about who is the top prospect in the state of Indiana.

It's not NW Indiana as much as Andrean still plays in 3A instead of 4A, 5A or 6A. The only 6A team they played was a way-down Merrillville. The DAC is better than 90% of the high school football conferences in the US.

To say a player hasn't seen talent like what's gathered at an all star game goes for 95% of the kids in the country. Not everyone lives in the regional hotbeds like parts of Florida, Texas, Georgia, California or even Indy and Cincinnati. Even then, if you're not in certain conferences / classes in those states, the football sucks like you were in Maine. The two closest schools to me here in OC are dreadful, They'd have losing records in North Dakota. The next two closest schools, Mission Viejo and JSerra Catholic have been ranked in the Top 25 nationally in recent years.

I had similar thoughts watching Coney's highlights. He just managed to stay in the hole and blow up RBs without having to build a head of steam. Hopefully they can also generate some pass rush because these would be 2 big hitters out there.

This is very similar to what B. Simmons and Wiltfong were saying about Josh. His 1-2 step punch just prior to contact is very explosive.

Is there any talk about him playing safety for ND or will he most likely fill the Onwualu/turner LB spot?

Speaking for myself, I absolutely love Maine. I actually wouldn't mind living there. Beautiful state---and Acadia is gorgeous. Also has pretty good beer.

I lived in NH last year and was in Maine weekly. Portland is like the east coast version of Seattle...coastal, great food, music and arts are big, hippies everywhere, etc. Summers there are outstanding. All the other months are miserable and depressing unless you're into winter sports. Or ice fishing.

When you get in your car at 7 am and it's -10, it's not gonna be a good day. Great people in Maine, though. Rough around the edges but warm and friendly people. Very blue collar. Dunkin Donuts every quarter mile. They piss on starbucks.

I think he'll play OLB. Saw him live and he's built well so I think he'll gain quite a bit of good weight quickly and easily. He played his best on the edges (especially getting after the QB) and wasn't nearly as impressive against the inside run game or in coverage. Raw skill is there to get better if he works, though.

Thanks. Sounds like he is not built for ILB from what I have read. Also keep reading that his coaches said he will play safety at ND. I like it that he is good on the edge. We need that.

In the "who's next" thread, Panda told us that his HS coach said that he would play safety at Notre Dame.

Yes. My bad, didn't realize what thread I was in. ha

I figured as much, two LBs from Indiana in one class can get confusing...ha.

As long as they're both Irish is all that matters...BK will figure it out from there.
