My guess is the strategy will be as follows. Run the zone read option with Zaire. As long as its effective and our D holds up he probably stays in the game. If we are not capable of stopping them (get down early) or Zaire isn't able to move the ball. Then Golson will come in and they'll attempt to chuck it all over the field.

I'm not sure. I mean, I am sure that Kelly will run MORE zone read than normal, but that could be twice a quarter. I think Kelly is going to try to bait LSU into loading the box, then try to hit them over the top for a couple of quick scores. It would absolutely help the Defense, to turn LSU into a one-dimensional offense by putting them into a hole early.

Man... I am totally shocked. I thought for sure it was 95% gamesmanship and Golson would start.

Credit to TP though, he said the younger guys wanted Zaire to get a shot. Apparently more willing to throw with anticipation into tight windows and run the offense as prescribed. Much better at the zone read. And a better leader.

Never thought Kelly would actually give him a shot though.

Kid you looked better than Golson against USC. You're starting.

I think he's sending a loud message to Golson about 2015.

He lost his starting job and it's now Malik's. You want it back? Hang onto the ball, don't throw INT's and get better at your reads!

(wtf does that mean?)

I think it means they don't get much of a say

I'm not sure, but I read it as there was some push to give Zaire a shot, and also some push for Golson, but when he makes a decision they get behind it. But who knows wtf a "limited democracy" is lol... it sounds suspiciously like the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

I would've lost a ton of money had I had the opportunity to lay it down on Golson starting. I like the call, though. Kelly wants to see what Malik is made of and what better spot than in a bowl vs LSU. I'm pulling for Malik to rise to the challenge. I really like his passion and perceived leadership.

First lefty to start at ND?
Yep.

Malik Zaire believes he'll win starting quarterback job for Notre Dame Fighting Irish - ESPN

If Zaire wins the job, he would become the first starting left-handed quarterback in Notre Dame history. Michael Bertsch, Notre Dame's director of football media relations, said a search of school records found the only left-handed quarterback who had played in a game for the Irish was Art Parisien, a backup under Knute Rockne who guided the Irish to the game-winning touchdown in a 13-12 victory over USC in 1926, the first meeting between the schools.

Me as well. I always thought EG would start with Malik getting about 40% of the snaps..

The team was practicing at Father Ryan here in Nashville. Wasn't able to get out there but a couple of friends of mine did. Said the team sounded fired up.

These guys plus Day..... maybe we look more like early season Irish D?? LSU is not a good offensive team and their run game is their whole enchilada. With these guys beefing up the middle I see a slight ray of hope on the horizon.

Offensively, I think the troops rally around Malik (or you could say Malik gets more out of his guys). I think we put up some points and come to play on both sides of the ball.

I would hope that our guys give the same effort regardless of who starts at QB, but you have to wonder if the current starters (Many of whom are Sophomores) aren't a little more excited with Malik under center. Malik was kind of a driving force during his recruitment that tried to rally players to ND, which kind of showed us early some of his leadership qualities. I'm excited to see how he does tomorrow, although he certainly didn't get any favors with LSU's defense when it comes to first starts.

Could be from the chicken!!!!

Only thing about practicing at Father Ryan is the field is artificial turf and LP is grass and only two days removed from Titans and Indy. Compile that with the weather we have had here, the field will play slow....could be to the Irish's advantage - maybe.

Go Irish!
