scUM could end up with a grand slam hire and it could be a no name or less recognized guy. Ever since Holtz left the word was no one could win at ND. Academics were too high, no kid wants to play in sub-zero temps. Small campus not a big party school, etc..

I always maintained that it was simply a string of poor hires when it came to the HC. You get the right AD in there and look what happens. Kelly has proven that. He was known, but not recognized as an elite D1 coach, but he has the skill set and has proven to be one of the elite coaches. scUM could do the same thing. Hope not, but they could.

I recently mentioned that the recruiting process for 2016 four-star linebacker Daelin Hayes, an early USC commit, may have a chance to get interesting now that he was moving back to Michigan. His move, plus the arrival of several big-time offers over the last month, has definitely accomplished this. A few of the new offers that have caught his attention at this time include Notre Dame, LSU and Oklahoma, but it is the Fighting Irish who are most on his mind. While he remains a USC commit, some sources believe that Notre Dame is actually his current leader. Expect more and more visits to South Bend for Hayes over the coming months.

We say this a lot but this class truly has a chance to be special, imagine:

QB- Henry
RB- Tuff to say right now but I believe we will get a good one
WR- Mack( real struggle with OSU right now but I believe we snag him), Kid from Michigan forget his name
TE- Hausmann
OL- Kramer, Liem, and one more
DL- King, Robertson, Cooper and Prince are all options
LB- Land Hayes

All kinds of elite talent on that list and this is just getting started

QB- Henry
RB- Tuff to say right now but I believe we will get a good one - Walker or McCall
WR- Mack( real struggle with OSU right now but I believe we snag him), Kid from Michigan forget his name (Corley) or Layne from OH
TE- Hausmann
OL- Kramer, Liem, and one more GUARD like Merritt or Davis
DL- King, Robertson, Cooper and Prince are all options
OLB- Land 2 of the following: Hayes, Youngquist, Tuckey, Borland or Burks
ILB - Ferns

All kinds of elite talent on that list and this is just getting started

is Mack really that elite? his film looks ordinary to me

I'm glad you said it, I've thought the same thing when I watch him. None of my friends have seen him play in person so I'll reserve judgement. To be fair, we've all seen unimpressive tape on great players before. Fort Wayne has been good to the Irish, hopefully he and Robertson keep that going.

im wondering a bit is Mack getting the benefit of the doubt from the supply line of recent talent from FW/IN in general. Kid's still a junior I guess and has time to develop. Would love to get Robertson though, kid would be like the Corey Robinson of the DL, tons of upsaide

That's fine for all those guys but you'd be better off asking yourself what Jaylon weighed when he was a junior, 195-200-205?... once again, if Hayes is 225 right now as advertised (I believe he is bigger than that from seeing him in person) he will have a hard time not being a 250lb human being in 4 years. Forget Longo, forget ND's training table, dude has a grown man's body already at 16 and he's got 22 months before he will get to a college campus. I stand by what I said, he's most likely gonna have a WDE's body. That doesn't mean I think he won't be able to play LB at the larger size. Larger guys have done it before.

.

How can an OLB not be 250? I am not seeing this as an issue...my best lb I ever coached is 250 playing OLB.

There is always exceptions to the rule but a 250 lbs for a 4-3 LB is huge. Weight is weight and there is always going to be a threshold that is different for every person but that said the more weight added there more likely the less athletic one is going to be.

Top 4-3 0LB's are usually between 215 and 235 depending on the system.

4-3 DE's will usually weight in the 250 to 265 range.

IMO at 250 lbs he's going to be a DE. straight line speed at that weight might be fine but the dropping in coverage and the athleticism to do so will be effected by the weight.

Top 3 NFL OLB draft picks last year were 237-255. Top two were over 250.

Hayes will grow into a player that I want in a golden helmet, that is all I care about. They say his athleticism reminds them of Jaylon, I'll take that at any position every day of the week, twice on Sunday.

Soooo what? You just proved my point Mack and Barr are 3-4 OLB and 3-4 OLB are bigger/heavier than 4-3 OLB.

3-4 OLB are more like 4-3 DE's hence why it's not very often that 3-4 OLB stay at LB when switching to a 4-3 they become DE's.

Maybe he could play OLB in a 4-3 at 250 but even good weight at a certain point is going to effect athleticism, speed and whatnot and they most likely scenario is that size and with speed he would have at that weight he would be better suited to being a Rush End than a OLB who needs more athleticism to constantly be changing directions and covering TE and WR and RB's.

Bruce Irvin - 6-3 248
KJ Wright - 6-4 246
Jaime Collins 6-3 250
Akeem Ayers 6-3 253
Donta Hightower 6-3 270
Vontaze Burfict 6-1 255
Von Miller 6-3 250

Just a short list of 4-3 LBers in the NFL...I could go on.

Of course there are always exceptions as everyone is build different but once again you're proving my point as you are talking about a handful of NFL players and we are talking about HS/college players. Bruce Irvin played what position in college? He was a DE.

Wright is technically a 4-3 OLB but Seattle 4-3 isn't the average 4-3 and they have over sized players at most positions.

Hightower might be listed as a OLB but he's just a freak, an exception to the rule as he's a just a playmaker and he gets moved all over. He plays all over the place from DE, DT, ILB, and OLB in both the 3-4 as well as the 4-3.

Collins is a hybrid DE-OLB and the Patriots play 3-4 defense hence why they just traded for Akeem Ayers because they need more OLB for there 3-4 defense.

Burfict is one of the players that best backs your argument but I've never said that there aren't any or that one can't. I've said the majority is that 4-3 OLB are in that 235 range.

Von Miller is truly an exception but yes he's a 4-3 OLB with Denver but remember in college (and we are talking about HS kids that are going to be college players and not one of best LB in the game today) he was a 3-4 OLB. Von Miller is a freak of freaks and can play just about every position on defense except CB. That said while he is a OLB the way they actually use him is as more a Rush End then anything else.

The point is and we have to get back to is Daelin Hayes in this thread and hopefully in the end he's Irish as he's a helluva HS talent and maybe in the end if he is 250lbs + that he is more of the exception play and stay at OLB but the more likely scenario is that as more weight is added the more athleticism will wane more so than speed so a move to DE would be better suited the majority of the time.

Thought we would have made some traction with him, I am surprised he hasn't taken any of those speculated visits.

He will, he almost showed up a couple times this year

We keep hearing that but he never shows. He has been speculated to visit Michigan, Michigan State and us numerous times and never shows. He may be more firm to USC than we give him credit for.

We had something come up he was only suppose to visit for Louisville. He will be back, I doubt his pledge sticks especially if he never moves back to Cali.
