Maybe that was Amir. Those who can't catch play DB.

I'm honestly asking as I saw on twitter earlier some said there was a #3 playing in the defensive backfield at practice and nobody could figure out who. I may have missed it, but have yet to see who it was.

So is he the magic #3 that was spotted in the bowl practice playing D that nobody could figure out?

No. That is Cole Luke. He wears his #3 for practice and changes jerseys to #36 for the game to prevent repeat numbers potentially on special teams.

Eliar Hardy does the same with #4 for practice and #16 for games.

Scout.com: Breaking the Mold

"The physical traits obviously are off the charts from a strength standpoint and an athletic standpoint. He is still continuing to grow and understanding the nuances, the little things, more than anything else that lead to the consistency that we need from that (slot) spot. No. 1, his route running has gotten better. Consistency catching the football has gotten better. There's a pretty good competition going on there." -- Irish offensive coordinator, Mike Denbrock on C.J. Prosise

“I felt like last year I learned how to play the game and how (consistent) your intensity has to be,” said Prosise. “I went out there and made a couple of plays, but I feel like this year there will be a lot more made."
"I would say the speed of the game (was the biggest adjustment). Everything seems to be moving so fast (pre-snap) especially with Tommy (Rees) checking, it was tough on me in the beginning. You have to learn to slow your mind down."
Built like a running back at six-feet, 220 pounds, Prosise's safety skills were nonetheless on display late last fall when he recorded a tackle in four consecutive games in punt/kick coverage. Of his seven receptions, four went for first down yardage highlighted by yards accrued after the catch -- usually because he ran through arm tackles.
His natural strength offers a weapon in the slot the shifty Carlisle and others on the Irish roster cannot provide.
“You’ve got to block the Sam (linebacker), a guy like Jaylon Smith, who’s 235 pounds,” Prosise said. “You also have to worry about getting (re-routed). That was the hardest thing about the position."
Recognize and understand the defensive alignment and coverage scheme. Know who you're going to A.) block, or B.) beat in a pass pattern. Potentially change all of the above after your quarterback audibles to a new play or blocking assignment late.
It's no wonder Prosise prefers operating in space after the initial play breaks down.

Interesting ... did not know that, or had forgotten.

It's clear the latter was an issue for Prosise as a rookie slot receiver last fall, not only because it was later revealed his mis-read of Stanford's defense caused the first of Tommy Rees' two fourth quarter interceptions last November in a near upset of the Cardinal, but from a cursory examination of his opportunities as well.

Yeah, I don't know that I ever heard or read that following the game. Interesting to see it put so squarely on Prosise's shoulders.

If Rees was so singularly gifted with reading defenses, can you really expect a first-year WR to keep up with him? Remember when Gruden kind of cornered Clausen for making a similar mistke with Floyd that cost us the UNC game?

Need to get him the ball in space more often.

Would like to see him and Amir on the field at the same time.

Thought he had a really good year.

Need to get the ball in his hands more often though.

I would like to see him lineup in the backfield along with a RB. He could slip out for passes, carry the ball and most importantly could be a lead blocker.

Think he should've stuck at defense. Good athlete with good size, not the best hands. In a sense, he lost the FSU and Louisville games with drops... I mean, not really, but he had passes in both those games hit off his hands in the endzone. I don't know if that'll ever improve.

Either way, must get cross-trained for safety before the bowl game unless Redfield is going to play.

I hear what you are saying. But, there was a log jam at safety before he moved. And he is just such a weapon in the open field, guys bouncing off of him and he has speed.

Should he have caught those balls against FSU and Louisville, probably but they were extremely hard thrown balls and difficult catches. Amir probably wouldn't have been able to hold onto those.

Murtaught was just singing CJ's praises in his review of the USC game:

I really like C.J. Prosise and loved the way he improved this season. He led the team by a wide margin with 18.54 yards per catch (482 yards on just 26 catches is phenomenal) plus his 51 yards on 7 carries made him a nice jet sweep weapon in 2014. He's someone I'd like to see in the mix on special teams next year, especially at kick returner.

Echoing what Sherm said above, hindsight is 20/20. He got moved because he was buried at Safety and wasn't likely to see the field. Were it not for our ridiculous run of bad luck at the position, moving him back wouldn't even be worth considering; especially since he's produced some very big plays for us this season.

Yes, he's had some particularly painful drops, but so have all of our WRs this season. Comes with having such a young and unseasoned group of skill players.

I thought that Prosise at his best was NFL-good. I'd like to see him as our number one RB/Slot next season, where the slot is actually used as a runner more than occasionally. He seems to have really fine "game-speed", and is powerful. He has, in my opinion, the talent to be a game changer. Prosise, Fuller, and Robinson [and a good dash of Brent] arrayed across the field has me awaiting next year with some optimism.

he's not a very good receiver, in my mind. he has NFL athleticism but has shown very clearly that he doesn't have the hands to be a particularly good receiver at the college level. I'm much closer to Lax' assessment of him. he can be a physical presence and an occasional target, and I think he improved a lot and will continue to improve. but he is not a natural receiver and I've seen no signs that he will become one.

CJ should be the guy that catches the ball on the various bubble/tunnel screens that BK calls... but instead it's our biggest and slowest WR, Robinson, that gets the call a large percentage of the time, especially on the bubble.

Don't get me wrong, Baby Admiral has enough burst to get yardage on these plays, and he's good for 3+ extra yards just by falling forward, but CJ would be a nightmare if he was the primary beneficiary of the screen game. Fuller excels in the WR screen game as well when targeted, but CJ has a size/speed combo that is perfectly suited for it.

The reality is inconsistent WR play has been a contributing factor to the offenses demise. Was it the determining factor, no but there have been a tremendous amount of key mishaps with the WR's that have been drive killers. This goes to CJ, Fuller, Brown, etc. I love what they can potentially do but they are far from "arrived" yet. I think Fuller clearly is the go to guy but that is quite the shaky go to WR that you can't even count on him to catch an easy slant for the 1st down.

Haha my brother and I were actually saying it would be funny to have Saban come watch our team practice for a week and pick which players he thought could actually get PT at Bama.

I said Prosise for sure. He is a FREAK athlete. I honestly would love to see him at RB, but no real point with TF and GB back next year.

I wouldn't be surprised if we let Carlisle go after this season. We have so many WRs, and I'd rather just let someone like Prosise play full time and to get a shot at kick returns.

Only way Carlisle gets asked back for next year is if we're worried about having 3 or less RBs on the roster. He can contribute at either slot or RB in a pinch which makes him valuable from a depth standpoint.

That's what I was thinking as well. I'd rather avoid a 3-headed attack at RB again though if possible and just roll with GB/TF.

It would make sense for us to bring Carlisle back for depth, but I feel like Kelly just doesn't do well when he's got so many skill position guys who he wants to get the ball to. If that makes sense? I'd love to see us just play 2 RBs and 3-4 WRs and that's it to get in some flow for once. Granted the subsitutions were much better this year....I still have nightmares about Daniel Smith and James Onwualu trotting on the field just to run block.

I also keep thinking we'll have a numbers crunch with 5th years, but only if we close well recruiting. Something I assumed we would do until this losing streak....

Been saying this for months now, need to get the ball in his hands more often. Good thing they did that today. Hopefully his injury at the end of the game is not serious.

4Q concussion. Doesn't look to be too serious. There are lots of team pics on Instagram right now of him celebrating in the locker room.

Concussion. If we strike out at RB, he's a pretty obvious "emergency back" for next year should we have a rash of injuries.
