<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Saban keeps emphasizing ball security, but Alabama keeps fumbling. Change in emphasis coming? <a href="http://t.co/id8zth1qRB">http://t.co/id8zth1qRB</a> <a href="http://t.co/P9o3GUIgM5">pic.twitter.com/P9o3GUIgM5</a></p>— CoachingSearch.com (@coachingsearch) <a href="https://twitter.com/coachingsearch/status/531990481841188865">November 11, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Nick Saban doesn’t know what else he can do to prevent Alabama players from fumbling the ball.

It’s been an issue all season, and a fumble deep in their own territory late at LSU nearly cost them the game, before an incredible game-tying drive and overtime win. A late fumble cost them at Ole Miss earlier this year.

Alabama has lost 11 fumbles in nine games this season. Of teams that have played nine games, only Eastern Michigan (15) has fumbled more.

At his weekly press conference, Saban was asked about the emphasis on ball security, and the coach said there’s no more they can do. Maybe it’s time to change the coaching style.

“We’ve been emphasizing it all year, so I don’t know you emphasize something that’s so important any more,” Saban said. “Maybe we ought to de-emphasize it, because we have emphasized it like crazy. Maybe that’s the problem. Maybe when you tell somebody something too much, they start thinking that. If you say, ‘You’re soft.’ How many times do you emphasize the fact that, ‘You’re soft, and we want you to be tougher,’ and you tell them they’re soft, before they start thinking they’re soft? That make sense?

“We’re doing the best we can in every way to try to emphasize the fundamental things we need to do so that we have ball security, especially at the end of games, which is critical. But you’ve also got to say, ‘We did a pretty good job of overcoming it in this particular game.'”

The Crimson Tide host No. 1 Mississippi State this Saturday.

This can apply to EG as well.

I think he's on to something here. It's 100% in Golson's head right now.

I don't care much about this guy or his team-I don't really watch much pro football these days.

The late fumble against LSU could be forgiven. Yeldon got caught and you could tell from the replay that something serious (ankle, foot, achilles) tore.

Golson not being confident is not the reason behind his fumbling issue. He doesn't make an effort to tuck the ball. Or even keep it somewhat close to his body.

But the point is that it's been beat into his head so much that it could be causing him to overthink. BK admitted that he doesn't know what else to do and it seems Saban has the same problem. EG is a young playmaker, at some point you hope it clicks.

I think the difference, like Beau said, is Ev doesn't even attempt to protect the ball at times. Using the ball to prop yourself up and regain balance... C'mon man. That doesn't sound like a kid that is overly concerned about ball protection.

There were so many drives that at worst should have resulted in flipped field position. It's Everett's nature to try everything before tucking and dropping.

I look at it like the All American RB that cuts back and loses five yards on a carry. Should he have done it? Probably not. But when he breaks the next one for a big gainer, then the five yard loss is a distant memory. Golson is who he is. At some point no amount of "reminding" him about ball security matters. Instead of BK giving it to him like he did in the post game presser, maybe he should use the other Saban approach - stick up for him and the team and give him a vote of confidence. The criticism hasn't worked.... maybe some confidence support would. I think Grahambo's idea is valid.

To some extent I agree. I didn't like BKs approach after the ASU game. But, to be fair to BK, he has gone out of his way to praise EG this year too. After the FSU game he said the ND had the better QB. That's high praise. It seems that BK criticized Saturday evening out of desperation to see if he can get it through EGs head that he needs to be better at protecting the ball.

I agree BK has given EG some praise as well. But, like you said, I didn't care for his approach after the game. Not just with EG, but with the whole team. I think he would have been best served as simply saying that he and his staff just have to get better in preparing each game. He put a lot of blame on the players - not just EG. Maybe that approach will work as well... it is risky though. Too much of that and the players will look at their HC differently.

Maybe some of the insiders out here know more about how EG practices. Does he lay it on the ground in practice? Does he throw needless ints in practice? If so, that's where it needs to be fixed. Hammer it out there... behind the scenes. Not behind a post game mic.

It is most definitely a high risk/high reward scenario.

I am hoping it works.

EG is our guy warts and all-this year and next year.

If Joe Montana was QB today this board would be screaming for Tim Koegel to start.

Montana was a career 52% passer. His career TD to Int Ratio was 1:1.He threw 25 TDs while throwing 25 INTs. He had several memorable 4th quarter come from behind victories but few recall those victories happened after he sucked for 3 quarters.

IF Joe hit 6 in a row in a rally or 8 out of 10 it meant he missed a lot earlier in the game. He was a streaky thrower. When he was hot he was unbeatable but when he wasn't ND foundered. He was 9-3 as a senior with a stellar supporting cast. He didn't have Hegarty at center, he had All-American Dave Huffman anchoring the OLine. He didn't have Folston, McDaniels, and Bryant as RBs, he had Vagas Ferguson and Jerome Heavens. Montana didn't have walk-on Schmidt or true Freshman Nyles in the center of his defense, he had ND's All-time Tackler Bob Crable backed up by Bob Golic.

IF Joe Montana was ND QB today playing the way he did in 1978 the mods would be working overtime to maintain order on the board.

But if Joe Montana had played for Kelly, he'd have won a Heisman, been a First team All-American, and would be in the College Football Hall of Fame. Three things he never achieved in college.

He wears a RED jersey in practice. He doesn't have a 250 pound LB in his grill forcing a throw off the back foot or stripping the ball from his grasp.

The story of Leahy making Lattner walk around campus carrying a football after he fumbled 5 times in a game is legendary but Lattner was getting blitzed in the classroom. Lattner mentally and physically improved his ball security on the field and he won a Heisman.
