Then you must be smarter than a ton of coaches that disagree with that sentiment. Certain gameplans (spread v manball) dictate the importance of the first possession. There are absolutely a ton of strategy revolved around how you gameplan that changes depending on if you win the coin flip.

Again... if there is really no advantage ever to winning the coin flip, then you must be smarter than a bunch of coaches that include Brian Kelly, Bill Beliceck and Mike McCarthy. All of which opined on specific strategy based off of the coin toss.

For the record, I understand there can be a SCHEMATIC advantage. Just want to make sure we all understand there is no STATISTICAL advantage in that you have equal chances of having an extra possession in the game regardless of whether you receive in the first or second half.

The coaches and players are used to starting the game with the ball. Why the hell would you change that in the biggest game of the season?

We didn't start with the ball against Stanford. I don't think they enter any game thinking they will 100% be on offense to start the game. Obviously Kelly tells the team if they win the toss they'll take the ball, but there's no way of knowing what the other team will do if they win the toss. I don't think Kelly would be messing up anyone's routine if he told them on Monday that we were going to defer if we won the toss for this road game.

Yes, but if the team who kicks off first ends up with the last possession in the first half also has the last possession in the second half (in which they received), then THAT team got an extra possession.

It can go either way. There are 4 possible outcomes for having the ball first/last possession of each half. Two result in equal # of possessions, one results in team 1 with an extra possession and the other results in team 2 having an extra possession.

Someone with a computer back me up here. Doing this from my phone is tough.
Yes. The following scenarios are when A receives the ball first. No scenario involves either team finishing +2 in possessions (which would require an onside kick or some kind of special teams turnover).

Scenario 1:
First half: ABABA
Second half: BABABA
A is +1 in the first half and +0 in the second half, net +1.

Scenario 2:
First half: ABABAB
Second half: BABAB
A is +0 in the first half, -1 in the second half, net -1.

Scenario 3:
First half: ABABA
Second half: BABAB
A is +1 in the first half, -1 in the second half, net +0.

Scenario 4:
First half: ABABAB
Second half: BABABA
A is +0 in the first half, +0 in the second half, net +0.

I highly doubt the gameplan depends significantly on the result of the coin flip. What kind of coach would let their game plan be affected that much by 50/50 chance?

If you read the context, I'm actually agreeing with Kelly, so I don't get what your issue is.

THANK YOU. I wrote this out on a piece of paper to check myself but didn't want to type the whole thing from my phone. Reps once I get access to a computer.

Is Notre Dame better than Clemson?? I think they are. Is FSU better with Winston? Obviously.

Is the collective difference enough for an Irish win? Probably less than 50%, but close enough to have real hope.

That's how i see it.

We are A LOT better than Clemson. Not to mention that Clemson had to bring in a true freshman QB not even half-way through the game. Their offense wasn't all that good to begin with.

I wouldn't bother talking about Clemson. For starters, Jameis didn't play in that game. Second, the transitive property doesn't apply to football. Whether we're better or worse than Clemson means nothing come Saturday as we could either turn the ball over 6 times, smash FSU by 20, or anything in between. That's the beauty of college football. For every '93 FSU vs. ND game there's a '93 ND vs. BC. The game will be decided on who brings the better game plan, who executes better, and who wants it more.

Yep - this is the one fear I had with all this hype. FSU against the world and they play their best game of the year.

Yeah, maybe.

There's a part of me that thinks they won't be mentally skrong enough to do it though.

It all starts and ends with Jimbo Sh-itheel. That guy has the face of a lunatic. He truly believes his own lies, and will convince his players to bring it. Bowden at least had that smirk where he knew BS was coming out of his mouth, Sh-itheel always has this look:

Their true freshman QB is ridiculously good. He hung 70 on UNC.

True. Clemson really beat itself in that game with turnovers and mistakes. We just have to avoid doing the same to have a chance.

I'm not campaigning for Bryant to get more carries, but when he's in there, since he's better in space and FSU corners play man, I'd like to see some quick pick and quick swing passes to him with the WRs blocking in space. I think that would work, especially Darby's way. Darby's fast and great in coverage but he's a pussy tackler.

C'mon man. A LOT better? No. Watson is legit and that defense is fast and athletic.

take this opinion for what it is....an opinion. There's lots of opinions on this website...

If FSU wins, they rallied around him; if FSU loses it will have been a distraction.

On koon's bean bag chair in his living room, snuggled up next to him. Beware of the no shirt and no pant policy though.
