Roma president James Pallotta spoke at the Leaders in Sport Convention in London today:

“Why did I choose to invest in Roma? It’s fucking Rome! We have one of the most passionate fan bases. All they want is transparency and honesty. The team? The average duration of the contracts of our players is 3 and a half years, we do not want to send away our players. The Stadio della Roma? A spectacular area. We’ve been working on it for four years, we got the ‘ok’ six weeks ago. The stadium has 60,000 seats could accommodate the holy war between Notre Dame and and Boston College, and the Pope could flip the coin. It will be open in two years, we would like if there were NFL, NBA, sometimes calcio competitions. I’m excited about how this will change the dynamics and bring Rome to a higher level.”

It will be a cold day in Rome when the Jesuits agree to share the Pope with the C.S.C.

Pass.

For tourist purposes, this would be awesome. For football purposes, ND should stay far far away unless they can manage to line up a schedule of Idaho, Purdue, BC in Rome, BYE, Navy.

If its followed by a bye week and a lesser opponent the week after that it couldn't hurt us too bad...or if it was the last game of the regular season.

If it was not clear in the article, the new stadium is expected to be finished in time for the 2016-2017 Serie A season. That would mean the end of August 2016. Here are a few pictures of what is proposed:

Season opener, with both teams playing cupcakes the following week.

I've been to Rome twice. Great "tourist" city. I'd love to make a third trip.

Fast train to Florence. Short train ride south to Naples and Pompeii.

Let's get this Damn game scheduled!

Agreed, although I'd be concerned about the heat in the late summer. By then the large summer tourist crowds would have waned somewhat.

I kind of like the idea of making it the last game of the season. Since the 2016 season is already scheduled with all dates filled, I would imagine this as more of a 2017 season option. The opening date has yet to be (publicly) filled for 2017, but the second game is at home versus Georgia. Not sure if I like that. The USC game is at home that year, so the last game of the season will be more flexible. Granted, it's a big trip at the end of the semester, but with enough planning...

Not sure if it would be an actual Shamrock Series game, but going forward:

2015: Fenway Park
2016: Alamodome
2017: Stadio della Roma?

Edit: Boston College is already on the schedule for 2017, as well. Yet another reason! Let's do this!

That would be up to Boston College. Fenway is our "home" game in the home-and-home, so they would need to be willing to move THEIR home game to Rome. I don't know if I see that happening. The next time we'd play BC would probably be home in 2020.

2017
Georgia
Michigan State
Miami (OH)
Navy
NC State
USC
Boston College
Louisville
Stanford
ACC (Home)
ACC (Away)
OPEN

My best guess on the open slot would be Shamrock against BYU if we could schmooze them out of the Provo game we owe them.

Rome is easily one of my favorite cities in the world, and as others mentioned, Italy's train system (as long as you are taking the high speed trains, not the slower local ones) makes getting to other cities pretty easy.

This + getting to see a Roma game (didn't get to since it was out of season when I was there last) + getting to see my family in Milan = NO BRAINER. Guess I should start saving up now.

I think 2018 is more likely for Rome. Maybe 2019 if they don't want to be international two years in a row.
