Top shelf Indy talent is nothing to scoff at. If Coney wants to come, I'd be psyched, he's a great player. But I'd love to lock down the state.

Agreed DN. The MIC is big time football that can compete with anywhere in the country.

If all things are equal, I'd rather have Kirkland that way his family is close by and hopefully fellow Indy LB, Bilal will join him. It's nice to have teammates to travel with during the down time.

I think its smart to think about pipelines when breaking ties (think Gorman).

That said, my #1 priority is kids who want to play for ND. If Coney decides to forget Florida and come fight for the Irish, then I'll be his #1 fan!

Even if Coney decides to pull the trigger for us soon, there will still be a non-negligible chance that he flakes out in favor of UF later on. Kirkland > Bilal >>> Coney.

Do we really only have room for one more LB??? For real B???

Haha I know. It is hard to believe.

People keep bringing up Schutt/Day. The worst part about that is that, in hindsight, we absolutely had room to take both players. I just can't help but worry that the same will happen here ... We will turn a guy away and then end up with a spot to spare anyway.

Agreed, I didn't mean commits to us temporarily, I mean plays for us!

I also agree that Bilal has a little bit of a weird vibe.

^^^ This x 1000^^^

To me, the biggest mystery of the Kelly era. Why not both? There had to be a reason, a reason that fell apart as they were under 85.

Think of all the threads that were born from a lack of depth at DT. Schutt would have silenced a lot of that.

Schutt allegedly tried to commit to Michigan, but they pulled his offer around the same time we gave Day that ultimatum. IIRC, a couple other programs dropped him like a hot potato as well. We'll probably never know the why, but our staff (along with several others) heard something like they really didn't like.

My theory has always been that Urbie shrewdly loaded up on any 4-star recruit that would come during that first recruiting cycle to create some buzz. A lot of those guys are either gone or not contributing much.

Not saying that it couldn't happen but I wouldn't expect too much traction there. Some may recall that TJ mentioned last summer that the staff wasn't too happy about his public statements regarding the commitment. Also, when it really boiled down to it he wants what OSU is and not ND.

What did I miss? Don't recall anything of the sort. I remember Cornell being a doucheknozzle, but not Hilliard.

This is the vibe I had for about the last 3 months of his recruitment. Justin always seemed to say the right things about ND, and I do believe it was his dad that really wanted him to give ND the closer look, but I never got the vibe that he wanted to do the extra things that ND requires of its student arhletes. tOSU allows him to get an education without having to put much work onto it, and I wouldn't be surprised if "the social scene" played some role here. Either way, I don't really care one way or the other, good luck to him, and we'll be fine with whomever wants to play for Coach VanGorder!!!

I got the impression that he appreciated ND, but that OSU's social scene is what drew him in . . . Big school, lots of action, in contrast to the smaller school he came from.

Per II will decide two weeks after his OV to UF this weekend. Also, it's likely that he OV's to Miami for the FSU game.

Yeah, probably closer to what I really meant......I just don't feel like he wanted the ND experience. Social life as well as the academic side.

Hey guys. I'm long time viewer here. Check it daily awesome stuff you guys do. I'm from Columbus so over the summer I was down at OSU out with some friends and saw Justin. My buddy was friends with the older brothers of a few kids Justin was with. We started talking to him and so on about OSU vs ND. Had great things to say about ND, but he said he just found a place better for him. It's pretty much that simple. Came down to the relationships he had with Urban and the players at OSU. Another thing I took away from the conversation was you could tell he was really into the OSU social scene. He brought it up multiple times. I'll leave it at that. Seemed liked a great kid, like Nostra said he appreciated ND, but he was just set on OSU for many reasons that ND could not match just because ND is what ND is.

That's funny because as a track athlete coming out of high school, I was choosing between Notre Dame and OSU (my dad's from Ohio), and when I got accepted by ND there was no question which school to choose.

It's not even close. Seriously.

I also would have picked ND, but from everything that was posted and read, I got the impression he wanted to "enjoy" (if you know what I mean) college life, because once it's over we all know it's time to buckle down for the next 40 years.

I could imagine there being a lot of temptation for a guy there at OSU. All those women and so much attention to the athletes. One really has to have his priorities in line to go to an ND over a place like OSU or FL or FSU. Hats off to the young men that are able to choose post football life over present football life. Wisdom beyond their years.

Nothing definitive. Still a two team race.

Personally, I think he's going to pull the trigger on the Irish soon, and I think he'll stick if he does (helps that he's an EE).

Sampson from II just posted that ND appears to be in great shape with Coney. Have won over the dad and people close to Coney thinks he should leave Florida for college. Even talking about retaking entrance exams to improve scores even though he's already qualified for ND.
