The best defense ND plays is the one they go up against every week in practice. What has Stanford done? Lost to USC and held the shitty terrible Washington offense to 7 points?

You will be

This, we have the talent to beat anyone on our best day.... But better hope its our best day, I'll just leave it at that.
Their defense is legit but their offense is not. We'll also be the best offense they've seen to date. I'm not saying we'll blowout Stanford or even beat them but if we lose to them it will be a true upset that's all I'll say.

I would have loved ESPN college game day come back to SB for this match up next week. The game was amazing in 2012 and I expect a very close game once again.

Im not any more worried about Stanford then i am for the rest of our games. I cant see their offense doing anything against us and our spread coupled with EGs legs should be enough to get by. I will be surprised if we lose and didn't beat ourselves, thats the only way i see us losing this one.

And im never optimistic.

I am not impressed with Stanford at all.

I would feel a lot more confident in that statement if you O-line did anything worth dick this season. They officially have one week to grow the fuck up. This is going to be a LOOOOOONG day if we can't establish any semblance of a run game. That said, confident our D will give us a chance to win this game, but they can't do it all.

Rewatching their game against Washington, it'll be interesting to see how we come up with offense. The quick screens will be blown up by their corners, who are strong and fast. We're definitely not running on them, either.

From the outside, I'd expect this game to be dictated by:

The ability to generate offense outside of screen passes and Golson keeping his jersey clean. Like others have said, Stanford will blow those up. Golson will have to read their defenses, stay on his feet and take shots down field.

Kelly better be scheming heavily for this game.

Also, Golson's not going to get away with dancing around in the pocket, which he's been really good at. Stanford doesn't over pursue and take bad angles. If he spins out of something, there's going to be someone there to smash him.

Expect more roll outs in this game.

As of yesterday's games, Stanford is #1 in Total Defense, Scoring Defense, and Pasing Defense. They are #41 in Rushing defense. Not a good match up for us to start.

So it sounds like a defensive or special teams score is the only way we score

That or they continue on with their numerous mental errors and lack of discipline. They are not great in the red zone either. I like our chances if they are determined to run the ball. But yeah, we need TOs and field position for sure.

Watching Stanford...
1. It's a horrible matchup for us, because I'm not sure how we move the ball.
2. Stanford looks like they'd be the best team in the country IF they didn't mentally implode so frequently. It's really insane how many mistakes they made against USC/Washington.
3. Will they make the same number of mental mistakes against us? Their skill position players on offense aren't scary and I don't think their OL has been as good as advertised.
4. Their defense last year was as good (or better?) than this one when you look at personnel. We scored 20 points and had a chance to win that game... on the road. I refuse to believe that we can't win this game, even if on paper this is a nightmare of a matchup.
5. I expect Vegas to install Stanford as 3 to 6 point favorites.

That's sobering. But for context:

We are #4 in scoring defense (they are #1), we are #27 in rushing defense (Stanford is #41), they are #1 in passing defense (we are #74), Stanford is #1 total defense, Michigan is #9, we are #38 so maybe their metrics for total defense should be revisited?

They also have played a better schedule to date than us and I think the Total defense metrics are just fine. We give up a lot of yards per game through the air in particular.
According to Football Outsiders and not including this weeks games, it is a wash defensiviely:
FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | 2014 FEI COLLEGE FOOTBALL RATINGS, DEFENSE

Offensively we have a large edge.

Where did you get your info that they've played a better schedule? Is it because of USC? Because they lost their only game to good competition.

UC Davis is 1-3, there win was Fort Lewis

Army is 1-3, with a win against Buffalo.

Washington's only other difficult game was East Washington.

I'd say our schedules so far have been comparable. They lost to the only good team on their schedule so far and almost lost to Washington. We haven't been close to losing and we've played mediocre teams. I agree they are a good team but I'm not seeing the numbers in their favor, I'm seeing a toss-up.

Yep, I am wrong. I knew they had one of the toughest schedules overall this year but to date it is not what I was thinking.

This game is just about focus. We play our game, don't turn it over 5 times and we win.

Will be attending, and I expect a slugfest. ND needs to be able to run, and OL play is concerning. Hope we can get pressure on their QB.

Not the same animal. These guys are salty on defense and play with much greater speed and athleticism than any defense we have seen. I agree with Lax, this is a nightmare matchup for us. I don't see how we move the ball. Certainly don't see how we go the length of the field.
