I don't have the replay, but #74 for Michigan State early in that game laid out a Oregon defensive back on the sidelines. I am shocked that kid popped up so fast.

Yes! Wow that was awesome. I'll see if I can find it. He surely popped up real quick but I think he laid down on the sidelines after he got up.

Anyone notice how none of the Michigan players came to Gardener's defense after getting laid out?

Looks like Onawalu was ready to lay the wood to Gardner then pulled up when he saw Max. I believe Frank Stams hammered Rodney Peete just like Max's hit in the Coliseum when Smagala returned a pick six just before half.

Stams did hammer Peete but he did so from Peete's right front and was legal (and vicious). Stams should have been in Peet's peripheral vision BUT Peete was focused upfield at Smagala returning the INT. As Smagala returns the INT and comes closer to Peete, Peete moves to HIS left to pursue Smagala and WHAM! HELLLLLLLLLLO STAMS!

Here's a video interview with Stams. The Peete hit is 11 seconds into the vid.

There are clips of Smagala's return where you barely see Stams in the upper left of the video. This one in up close and personal.

And I suspect in today's environment Stams would be flagged.

Particularly when after knocking Peete down, he dove on top of him making sure he couldn't pursue a play which was 20 yds downfield by then.

On Stams' play it would qualify as targeting today. Redfield's wasn't that.

Guys on mgoblog call Redfields hit on Gardner an awful bush league play

I concur, not like he had to go across the field and out of his way to get to him. 38-0 rolls off the tongue a little sweeter than 31-0.

What I don't understand is Gardner was running towards Shumate ( no matter if its a jog or sprint). To me, as a defensive player, thats an attempt to tackle my player. Why is it illegal to hit that player?

He did what you are taught to do since the middle school.

Personally, I thought it was a bit bush league play. Cost us a TD that would have been an awesome way to end the game. Gardner wasn't in the play, the game was over, and honestly it was a pretty dangerous play as far as they go. I don't think it was a big enough deal to take anything away from an awesome game or take anything away from Max, who had a nice night. I just would have preferred he didn't do that. I think if the shoe was on the other foot, people on this board would be saying similar things to whatever the people on mgoblog are saying. It definitely wasn't the hit of the year; it isn't hard to take someone out when you blindside them running full speed.

Sorry but I wouldn't. He was clearly jogging towards the play, and was near the narrow sideline where the return man needed to go. Also he was the only "defensive player" within Redfield's reach when the interception return began.

EDIT: I'm sorry but another thing. Look at that gif. Really look at it. Redfield uses his arms and body to push Gardner over. You don't think he could've completely killed Gardner on that play if he had wanted to?? I mean all it would've taken is a lowered helmet to Gardner's head.

This the play players look for! If you don't keep your head on a swivel, be ready to get clocked. He hit him legally and as stated, he didn't go out of his way. Gardner looked to be trying to make a play to me. IMO, Gardner should have just stayed where he was and not half assed his way into the mix.

31 or 37, doesn't matter because FUCK Michigan, we shut them out and Bo still hasn't won shit!

I was "a little" disappointed that Redfield was all smiles afterward...the call cost his bro a a pick-six and his team 6 points. Anyway, I hope Gardner and Funchuss are both OK.

Redfield's hit was so mundane. No helmet to helmet, not even shoulder pad. He more or less just pushed him hard, it just seemed worse because Gardner didnt see it coming and played dead for a while after getting hit.

Instead of responding to everyone, I'll just give one general response: I don't think it is a huge deal. I'm not calling Max dirty and I'm not upset about it. Just, all things being equal, I'd have preferred the six points and didn't think it was really necessary. I didn't have a huge problem with it, and if the penalty hadn't been called I'd have had even less of a problem with it.

So many things that were great happened on that play.

1. Gardner got crushed.
2. Pick Six
3. Game over
4. Can't end game on D penalty
5. Michigan had to come back out

It was exciting in the moment but I'd make sure our guys know when it is appropriate and when not. That TD didn't mean anything but if it did...

I don't want anyone to be injured but it happens when you play football. They don't give you a helmet and pads to look good. If the ball is live you better be aware of what's going on and where everyone is.

Gardner:

I totally get all of that, and agree with some of it. But, the play was called for unnecessary roughness. And that is exactly what it was. Just because guys are wearing gear doesn't mean you have to take every opportunity to try to decapitate someone who has no prayer of being involved in the play.

An awesome hit isn't cleaning someone's clock who doesn't see you coming and you are away from the play. This is the type of hit that is the hit of the year:

clowney2-1-1-13.gif

That is a football play and a BIG hit.
