- Stating the obvious: Golson and the RBs were great
- Field looked nice
- It is nice to have a punt return game for once
- Most of all, it was refreshing to see BK and Golson have a conversation on the sideline and not just BK screaming at Golson about what he did wrong.

- How was the music for those that went? Crazy Train again this year?

You can spit out those stats all you want. Golson was superb at extending plays on the run. When it comes to running QB's I feel he is elite at running around. He may not be a burner but his arm is incredible. Get fellows I am not trying to argue, but I like our QB!
My problem is that he extends plays that don't NEED to be extended. It's like he has his first option and if it's not there he goes to "screw it, let's improvise" mode. In this case, almost every improvisation panned out, but we can't know how much that has to do with the quality of the athletes on the other side of the ball.

Not sure why there is all this Farley hate. I thought he played well today.

12 carries for 41 yards is a 3.4 yard per carry average. That's absolutely average, if not a little below average.

^^this^^

I wasn't meaning to be overly critical of him, I was just stating my opinion that, as a pure runner, he is pretty average. He'd be the 4th tailback on this team, without a doubt. But he doesn't have to be a great runner, to influence how other teams prepare.

The thing is he's not a pure runner. He's not a tailback. He's a throw first QB with scrambling ability.

That stuck out to me. BK even approached him after he threw behind Koyak (I think), when it was almost intercepted. He responded and BK listened and walk away seemingly not angry. No purple face, no yelling. It was a good thing to see.

My problem is that he extends plays that don't NEED to be extended. It's like he has his first option and if it's not there he goes to "screw it, let's improvise" mode. I thought at times he looked like he slid to a spot in the pocket where he was more comfortable and probably had better vision. The o-line is new, and him being back there is too. I'm hoping this gets corrected as the season progresses.

Not sure why there is all this Farley hate. I thought he played well today.

I thought he was a little out of place and slow for the first series or two. After that he looked better.

That was an incredible performance by Mr. Golson! All this distractions and these kids came through like nothing happened.

Luke and Riggs are special and if Russell comes back we are in great shape at the position.

Will Fuller!

Greg Bryant is everything we thought he was and more!

I think CJ is an exceptional athlete, and if he can be more sure handed watch out!

I liked what I saw from Trumbetti and Blankenship on the edge for being so young.

Really liked Jones and Day's game yesterday. Will need another good performance next week especially though.

Just overall was very pleased with all three phases of the game! I think if we can get some closure form the academic situation and gain a few of the kids back, we will look very strong moving forward. Biggest issue right now is on the back end. Need Collinsworth and his leadership back on the field. Great game fellas, everyone should be very happy today!

Yes, that is exactly the point.

I'm not the one who said they are the No. 1 team in the country.

Wait, all you talked about was how much bigger, faster and stronger FSU is than ND. Then someone mentions how an unranked team is making FSU look very average, and you say "thats exactly your point"????

Color me confused.

Great game with plenty to be happy about. Golson, WR's, decent tackling, Bryant/Folston, a return game. Kelly obviously happy=me happy. To nit-pick:

OL could do with some improvement in pass blocking.

DL needed more pressure.

Obvious comm issues in secondary.

Tappen, although polished, is not cutting it for me-missing that little something.

LOL. Come on bro. Your bias against Golson knows no bounds. Dude plays a lights out came and you still find something to criticize smh.

BTW, he did a great job of going through his progressions today for the most part. Re-watch the game and you'll see what I mean...

That was kind of my point, I guess. I heard quite a bit of chatter(on TV, not in here), yesterday, about what a great runner he is. He scrambles really well, but he is NOT an exceptional runner. Guys like Mariota at Oregon, and Miller at Ohio State; those guys are outstanding runners! As a runner, Golson is not even in the same neighborhood as those guys.

That doesn't mean that I don't want him as my QB, or that he is not a damn good football player; it's just my observation that some folks around the country may be getting a little giddy, and putting the cart before the horse, when they talk about Golson being an elite running QB.

I'll be pissed if Bryant/Folston don't get 90% of the carries against UM next week.

Because they ARE bigger, faster and stronger than ND. And we will experience this in mid-October. That is all I am saying.

I never said they were the best team in the country. That is what someone else said.

So why are you confused? It is a pretty simple point.

Didn't look through the whole thread to see if this was mentioned yet but the few plays Nyles Morgan was in he was around the ball/ in on the tackle.

Maybe. But all it proved is that FSU isn't untouchable and ND absolutely COULD play with them.

I was at the game and had my eyes glued on him as well when he was in. Such a physical player. There's no doubt in my mind that he'll be taking more and more reps from Schmidt as the season progresses.

Never believe I'm the one confused when you converse with me. It'll either be a faulty assumption, failed logic or hopeful presumption but they'll all be attributable to you.

Golson looked very good and controlled the offense. I would have love him to get 300 yards passing but oh well.

The runningbacks looked great particularly Bryant and they all know their role.
The recievers are adequate though it would be great if we got Davaris back.

The offensive line allowed the team to run the ball but they struggled some in pass pro. This is slightly scary but it was only the first game.

The defensive line was not terrible. Sheldon Day played great playing his natural position. Jones played physical. Rochelle was physical and Trumbetti and Okwara were fast. Not much depth.

Linebackers looked good. Jaylon flew around the field in an impressive game. He was much more physical than last year. Schmidt has some impressive tackles and got run over as well. He will be a plus on this team. James Onawalu was ran over in some of the plays I saw. This scares me.

The defensive backfield did exactly what I thought. They made quite a few plays but also busted some coverages. I love Shumate out their if he knows what he is doing. It would be great having Austin out there though. If we could get Kei back we would be in really good shape with the versatility.

We did not show much on offense or defense. I think we will throw the ball much more this week. Greg Bryant will play much more right now. Also with the game play we will get much more pressure this week.

Let's be honest- ND isn't on FSU's level yet. Could they hang with them? Yes. Should ND beat them? Prolly not. That said, FSU isn't in another stratosphere like some on this board though/think, and I feel a lot better about that match-up than I did 24 hours ago.

With any luck. Schmidt has all the heart in the world (and great instincts), but without the tangibles to go with it, doesn't really mean scratch against the better half of our schedule.

I read as far as I could so I apologize if already covered. Our OL and DL is horrible! We played rice yesterday and both Elmer and Stanley got made fools. Pressure from the defense? Not this defense. We are screwed next week unless BK kept most of his secrets hidden. Michigan will attach the edges and destroy us. Again, this is uness BK has secrets he hid for this game.

Regardless... the OL has a job that can never be hidden and they are not anywhere NEAR what some have expected. Gonna be a long long season fellas!

If FSU's defense looked bad and the offense good, I'd be more optimistic about our game against them.

But their defense is great, I have no doubt about that after watching yesterday. Physically imposing. Gotta think their offense will come around by game 6.

This throw and the one that CJ dropped were the 2 best passes I've seen a Notre Dame quarterback make since Jimmy Clausen.

I liked the pass to Koyack I believe over the middle. He fit that ball on a rope and with ease in the tightest window. It was beautiful.

CJ's drop was a duck that was very slightly under thrown. Hell of a play to even get the throw off and reach him, but it wasn't "top two passes since Clausen" caliber. Obviously should have been caught though.
