Oh that's right, he did have that foot infection in 2011. Good memory Bogs. He did play in most games that season though.

JUNIOR SEASON (2012): Missed entire season following preseason knee injury.

SOPHOMORE SEASON (2011): Saw action in 10 games ... caught one pass for eight yards and recorded three tackles on special teams ... caught pass in win vs. Navy ... tackles came in wins against the Midshipman, Maryland and Maryland.

FRESHMAN SEASON (2010): Did not see game action during the 2010 season.

I believe he would have three season. He lost two in five; RS and knee last year.

Do you mean to get a medical redshirt? You have to have lost two seasons to injury. The 2010 season was an elective redshirt; he was not hurt that year. The foot injury was in 2011, and it only cost him two games.

I thought we determined it's more than a full season, that doesn't mean it has to be 2 seasons. I mean it could be one full season and a half of another. Remember Slaughter never was out an entire season.

But Slaughter didn't get his sixth year. There's definitely grey area in how close to two years lost to injury you have to get, since this is a matter of a committee voting on whether to give you additional eligibility, but "more than one season" definitely doesn't mean one season and two games in another season. It means two (or substantially two) seasons lost to injury. At least that was how the BGI guys (and their counterparts at other sites, as reported by IE members) summarized the rule when Slaughter was going through the process.

There's also this rule regarding "hardship waivers," which gives some guidance on how much of the season you can play and still be eligible for a medical hardship redshirt. Welch definitely doesn't fit:

14.2.4 Hardship waiver. A student-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition by the conference or the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement for reasons of “hardship.” Hardship is defined as an
incapacity resulting from an injury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: (Revised:
8/8/02, 11/1/07 effective 8/1/08)
(a) The incapacitating injury or illness occurs in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition at any twoyear or four-year collegiate institutions or occurs after the first day of classes in the student-athlete’s senior year
in high school; (Revised: 1/10/92 effective 8/1/92, 11/1/01, 8/8/02)
(b) The injury or illness occurs prior to the first competition of the second half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport (see Bylaw 14.2.4.3.4) and results in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season; (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01,
4/3/02, 4/24/08)
(c) In team sports, the injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three
contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 30 percent (whichever number is
greater) of the institution’s scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or her sport. Only
scheduled or completed competition against outside participants during the playing season that concludes
with the NCAA championship, or, if so designated, during the official NCAA championship playing season
in that sport (e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitation in calculating both the
number of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of
scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition during that season in the sport. Dates of competition
that are exempted (e.g., alumni contests, foreign team in the United States) from the maximum permissible
number of contests or dates of competition shall count toward the number of contests or dates in which the
student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition
in the season, except for scrimmages and exhibition contests that are specifically identified as such in the
sport’s Bylaw 17 playing and practice season regulations. Scrimmages and exhibition contests that are not exempted from the maximum permissible number of contests or dates of competition may be excluded from the
calculation only if they are identified as such in the sport’s Bylaw 17 playing and practice season regulations;
and (Revised: 1/10/92, 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 3/10/04, 5/11/05, 8/4/05, 4/26/07,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Slaughter never missed an entire season.

Yes def some grey area though.

FYI - If anyone is wondering if it hasn't been posted already ---

Tyler James pronounced his name wrong while doing a show.

You pronounce his name as "Wisher"

Nic doing a little recruiting himself. A very strong possibility that "Beneventi to Weishar" will be a connection in a couple years

That'd be a big time pull.

Seems like we have our best shot with:

1) Nelson
2) Smith
3) Bars

And I'd put J.Jones below those guys.

Hard to read that article with a dry eye. I also lost my older brother to cancer when he was just into college and I was only 16. My brother a college basketball player and we got a call from one of his teammates that noticed he wasnt acting normal and was complaining of difficulty swallowing (esophageal and stomach cancer). I can empathize with Nic and have great respect for him and his family. Represent your brother with pride as I know you have done and I guarantee he is looking down on you with pride.

great article and a great kid.
I think you will agree its for stuff like this that we follow recruiting. We need to spend more time realising the great kids ND has and their stories rather than focusing on the likes of EV et al.

I thought I read somewhere that "Wisher" was going to be playing DE and not TE. Am I wrong here? Was there a discussion somewhere about this?

TE. Yes. No.

Are you confusing him with Jacob Matuska?

I ran into a guy wearing a Marist hat at the local watering hole this weekend. Struck me as the teacher/coach type so I asked him if he knew Weishar. He was shocked I knew of him and was very happy I asked. Turns out his son grew up with Nic and plays with him at Marist. He believes Nic will be special. Said he's got all the talent in the world but he's most impressed with his intangibles. He called him a natural leader and the type of player coaches want to coach (he's wrestling coach). He mentioned ND was an easy choice for Nic. He loves the University and has a great relationship with the coaching staff. He was very proud of the kid, and I thought it was somewhat unique. Just thought I would share the story.
