Pleased

Secondary miscommunication

Schmidt extension of BVG on the field

Golson electric

Like play of DLine

If Front 6 continues to hold up we'll be in great shape for the season

Q&A
Collinsworth grade 2 MCL. Will be out next week. Could be back in 2-3 weeks.

Turf helped players get good plants to make cuts.

Good: we won

Bad: our own network seemingly dropped us multiple spots in the overall title count... Why??

Shumate seems to have a lot of talent but it's frustrating to see the mental game has not caught on. Next week we have to get after Gardner. Funchess scares me on their offense and could cause a lot of problems. I wish Kelly would give GB the majority of the carries but I don't think that will happen. Great win!!!

Yeah I don't think I heard Cole Luke's name once during the broadcast. Sign that a cornerback played great.

Golson spread the ball around. Which I like. He had a tendency, in 2012, to stare down WRs and depend on just one. I think he's vastly improved with that. I don't think, even with DD, today a #1 WR would have been dominant. Fuller had 4, and Koyak 3, of Golson's passes. That's 7 of his 14 completions.

What I would like to see is more RB screens. I think we had 1, to Cam. And he's obvious not the fastest in the stable.

They were able to utilize Prosise and Carlisle as weapons. Not having to rely on 1 WR and 1 TE should benefit everyone.

"We won't say who went the wrong way on that TD run"

The off field matters haven't been a distraction. The players care about their teammates but they focused on what they needed to do.

Punt Returns 70 yds versus 120 last year. Riggs was gassed. Bryant fearless. We've got a 1-2 combination.

Starting Field position in recent years was around the 20. Today it was around the 40.

I believe he made the tackle that knocked the ball lose. CB play was great overall. Hopefully KVR will be back next week meaning one of Luke or Riggs will be able to cover the 3rd WR instead of a safety.

We got confidence today but need to pay more attention to detail.

I can't remember a game when I only had 2 penalties.

I didn't want it to be sloppy.

??? (couldn't hear the name) was a Harry's pregame decision.

Q. In the past Golson wasn't strong over the middle. He looked good there today.
Kelly agreed

Q Multiple receivers.
Kelly. There won't be A GUY. We've got multiple guys so it will vary each week.

If they are going to use Michigan's 11 they could have done the unofficial 13 that many say we should claim.

- Secondary misunderstandings were understandable.

- Baratti never ran a 4.4 laser 40. Ever.

- Riggs and Luke looked great.

- Farley's still a major liability in tackling (shoulder must not be recovered).

- Schmidt was impressive.

- As I predicted, Fuller >>> Chris Brown IMO.

- Jaylon is a star.

- Heisman is now spelt Golson.

- Thought OL was unimpressive in first half. All passes were made by Golson making a play for himself. Not a lot of running holes. Much better on the ground for the OL in 2nd half.

- DL was average to me. Not impressed.

- Greg Bryant is our #1 back IMO and should get most of the carries against Michigan.

- BVG looks like an axe murder.

- Overall, very happy with the big win. Expectations remain the same until I see more from the defense.

- Fuck Michigan.

would disagree with Farley assesment based on first look...I might have missed some things, but he looked ok to me. BETTER even.

I guess two things stuck out to me....Rice was not "fooled" by our defense...they seemed to have an outlet receiver etc. every time we got cute...thats a little spooky to me.

Yea we'll have safety coverage play all year that will make us all nuts...but the thing I'd like to see is less hesitation on some things like bubbles...our contain was good, but broke down at times too...got caughgt flat footed I guess.

these things as applied to Michigan bug me because gardner is mobile, they will go over the top, but they also will get the ball in play makers' hands crossing and on bubbles...alot. Need consistency.

- Golson is extending plays better than two seasons ago. He still has the same arm talent and he is still a one read QB. Excellent performance tho.

- Bryant is really good as any RB in the nation not named Melvin Gordon or Todd Gurley. Folston is nice too and Mcdaniel always produces.

- Elmer with a solid day but was beaten for an ugly sack. Stanley with a lot of problems against a former walk on. Nick Martin with two penalties. Very solid game for both guards.

- Decent, good job by receivers.

- Sheldon Day is unbelievable, shame he is undersized because he would be a top ten draft pick. I mean, he DOMINATED the trenches. I love Okwara, he is really good. As expected, we did not miss Ishaq, at all.

- Schmidt playing very aggresive but he only make plays when he is unblocked. Good not great game by Jaylon.

- Shumate is bad. Cole Luke will be better than Keivarae, good game for Farley and Riggs.

- Redfield plays too deep to be in position to make plays but i do not see a wow factor in him. Not against Rutgers, Spring game or today. He makes his homework but i do not find him impressive but he is too early to tell.

- Very impressed with Tranquill, he EXPLODES through ballcarries and has some serious closing speed. Just flashes but i never felt that feeling with Redfield or other players.

Did we show all our cards on offense here or do we still have something up our sleeve?

Specifically, what was troubling about the o-line? They opened holes in the run game, gave Golson time, avoided pressure and I think they had one penalty all day. Elmer gave up a sack on a nice speed rush. Wasn't good but it happens. I thought they played well and it was a perfect tune up for Michigan.

Golson spread the pill, man. Good luck trying to game plan against the offense if we have this much distribution. I understand wanting a clear cut number one receiver but how do you defend us if everyone can make plays. I had no idea who was getting the ball today and it was fun to watch.

Defensive line didn't play great but it's not like Rice was taking 7 step drops either. I'll take the same type of game plan against Gardner. Keep him contained in the pocket and avoid mental breakdowns.

Jaylon is unreal. He's just so damn smart. I have a man crush on him.

The secondary should make some adjustments. One obvious breakdown on the first score. I'm not sure the play that set the TD up was a mental mistake, though. Looked like someone, I believe Schmidt, just got caught in some traffic. Maybe I'm wrong. I'd have to re-watch.

Good game. Built some confidence, I'm sure. Let's kick michigan's dick in next week.

On the "NFL Blitz" nobody even looked at the RB coming out of the backfield much less covered him. It was a defensive bust. Credit the Rice QB and RB but it should have been a short to medium gain not a big play.

On their last TD in garbage time, Barrati bit on nice play action and was beaten.

Those two plays were 90 yds of their 220 on the day.

ND's two most experienced secondary were out. There were communication errors as would be expected in Game 1 with a full complement of players.

One of the things I didn't see were LBs with arms flailing running 8-10 yds behind an open receiver shouting imploringly, "Somebody get my man!"

^I thought the Oline did a mediocre job of protecting Golson early on.

On one play earlier on Golson was able to elude the defender where Rees would have been creamed. It wasn't a missed block. NOBODY picked up the defender.

I was just about to post this.

Way to keep your head in the game boys!

Outside of a fluky Brindza miss, Special Teams was a WIN!

Haven't said that about the Irish in a long time.

The first punt return the Irish I about jumped off the couch. Special teams play was a huge and much needed improvement.

Golson played marvelous. CJ Procise redeemed himself but still needs to make that catch.

O line played very well opening the running game for McDaniel, Bryant, & Folston.

The thing that concerns me is secondary. I'm sure many agree.

- Offense looked great. Golson was on the money with the majority of his throws, and consistently made good decisions. I understand the level of opponent must be taken into consideration, but I believe we could be looking at one of the best 10-20 offenses in the country this season.

- All of the RBs looked good, but Bryant obviously stood out. Kid is going to be a stud, no question about it.

- Jaylon Smith is a future 1st rounder. Just a blue chipper. Not much else to say.

- Sheldon Day had some disruptive plays.

- The defensive line, in general, was bad. Very concerning day. I understand there's been a lot of attrition there, but they got little to no pressure all game and were constantly getting pushed around by a weak offensive line. I'm very concerned about this area.

- The DBs made a lot of mental mistakes, but they're correctable.

- Riggs looked great as a returner.

Sonic Raider's write up

-Welcome back Everett Golson, we missed you. Malik Zaire could be a Golson 2.0

-Our running back corps is loaded, Cam McDaniel, Greg Bryant, Tarean Folston, oh my!

-William Fuller gives us a deep threat, our receivers do need work catching the ball as well as tight end Ben Koyack

-Offensive Line is young and will get better with time, we were fortunate Zack Martin and Chris Watt stayed as long as they did.

-Sheldon Day is fast and athletic for his size, holy shit

-Jaylon Smith is an animal of a linebacker, also loved Schmidt.

-Secondary needs a lot of work, this will be our weakest area this year
