Why didn't Kelly have a QB coach previously? Seems like every school has them, even in FCS. I know Kelly probably assumed that role, but I think it's still important to have a dedicated position coach here.

Because Tommy Rees was a QB coach?

I believe it is a role that Kelly had assumed in the past. During 2012, I distinctly remember hearing NBC pump up the Kelly/Golson relationship and his role as the QB coach. They would have dinner dates together and go over tape and what have you.

Molnar was a QB coach no?

I think so, and then Kelly was basically QB coach after Molnar left while Martin got acclimated to the offense, and then Martin was the QB coach.

But yeah, Kelly has done some things that I haven't seen before when it comes to splitting up the staff's responsibilities. On D for example: safeties coach, DC/CB coach, DL/OLB coach, then AHC/DC/ILB coach. I'm used to seeing a DC, a DL coach, a LB coach and a DB coach.

Then on offense we had at one point a RB/Z receiver coach, outside WR coach, TE/ST coach, OL coach, and OC/QB coach. Also a bit bizarre.

But who am I to say what's the best way to divide up the coaching staff's responsibilities? I can think of lots of good reasons for defining the position groups the way Kelly has. I suppose it's a matter of the head coach's style and philosophy.

Pre-gaming and wondering why this guy has gotten a pass on everything that has happened (with golson in particular) this year...hoping to see some better results with Malik!

Go Irish! Beat tigers.

Maybe he never stood a chance of breaking the habits EG developed earlier in his college career. Seeing what he can do with MZ/DK/BW will be much more telling IMO.

Full month of prep as starter for Malik, I think Piombino hits it on the head.

Cautiously optimistic.

Just wanted to let everyone know. Matt LaFleur seems poised to become a HC of a football team real soon.

Washington Redskins (2010-2013) - Mentored RGIII with huge rookie season and had Kirk Cousins for first two seasons of his career (turned out pretty good)

Notre Dame (2014) - Oversaw trio of Golson, Zaire, and a redshirting Kizer. Went 8-5 and Kizer went along to do some good things the next season.

Atlanta (2015-2016) - 8-8 first season followed by a trip to the Super Bowl in 2016!

LA Rams (2017-) - 7-2 team and he's the Offensive Coordinator of the number 1 offense in football! Guys like that get hired to be HC's.

Real soon or maybe in 5 years? He's been an OC for exactly one year?

Q: How many super start DC's or OC's turn out to be flops as a HC?
A: Too many to answer.

Not saying he won't be a good HC, but simply excelling as a coordinator doesn't always equate to success. I blame most of those failures on the GM or owner. They have tunnel vision that a guy has to be a coordinator before he can be a HC and miss on a lot of guys.

Wasn't saying LaFleur would be a big time coach but look at Vance Joseph, Anthony Lynn, Sean McVay. That's 3 new hires with 3 or fewer years as a coordinator. Just seems to be the trend that teams are going for some reason.

Not arguing. My point was more along the lines that they should be looking at more than just coordinators. I don't care if he's got 1 or 15 years as a coordinator. It's really his organizational skills and ability to sell and relate to the players that is most important.

Yes, absolutely. Not all coordinators can be head coaches. And it works both ways. Look at Ben McAdoo. He's an offensive guru but shouldn't be an NFL head coach

Charlie Weis, maybe? Seemed to be pretty good as an O coordinater. Not so much as a head coach.

Matt LaFleur is the OC of the Rams, but the head coach Sean McVay is calling the plays I believe.

I've heard that the NFL interview process can be "interesting" in that some guys interview for HC jobs with the up-front understanding beforehand that they WON'T get the job.

The coach is taking the interview for the experience, because he knows he's on the trajectory to having his own team in the next couple of years, and the team offers the interview on the off chance that they might catch lightning in a bottle, even though they are actually targeting some other guy.

The speculation when it was announced LaFleur would interview for the HC position was that it was for a free consultation and outside assessment for the Titans, which is a tactic that is employed fairly regularly (or at least attempted) in the league now.

The Titans brought in a guy that hadn't called plays before, let alone lead an entire team. So he was willing to play the game because, at the very least, it gets his name out there among other teams and GM's in public. If he blows them away, maybe he gets the head gig. If he does really well, maybe he gets the OC position (which would still be a promotion for him, since he wasn't calling plays in L.A.) If he flops, then he gets to remain McVay's sidekick (or perhaps another OC job); but got a free trip to Nashville to gain interviewing and networking experience, while the Titans got, minimally, an outsider's assessment of their roster and ideas for future use of players.

I don't think the Titans were ever seriously considering him for the HC role, but he was impressive enough to get a true OC position.
