USC-Stanford is a rivalry too, and Oregon-MSU is a pretty incredible non-conference matchup. Not to mention both of those games will likely both feature two top-15 teams. ND should be top-15 by Michigan weekend, but Michigan will likely be unranked.

This is apples to oranges though. Each of these games brings something different to the table. USC-Stanford has huge conference implications early in the season, Oregon-MSU is a rare (and fantastic) matchup, and ND-Michigan is a the last meeting of a historic rivalry.

ESPN can't lose by picking any of the three, but I'd still be surprised if they picked ND-Michigan. Oregon-MSU is likely to feature the highest-ranked combination of teams and USC-Stanford is on their own network. Free advertising.

Oregon and Stanford will both be top 10 teams in the preseason. Neither Michigan or Notre Dame will be.

This being the final game in the rivalry and a night game, I think it's a special exception.

As much as I'd love to see GameDay there, I don't think it is large enough for ESPN to give NBC hours of advertising instead of pumping up their own game.

I'd bet on MSU-Oregon. Smash mouth, old style football program versus west coast video game offense. Rose Bowl/Big 10 champ against perpetual Pac-12 contender. And, yeah, I don't see ESPN being there to promote NBC's broadcast.

I don't think there's any chance it's Stanford and USC.

It may not be ND/Michigan, but they're not taking USC/Stanford over the Oregon/MSU game. There's no reason to considering the Oregon/MSU teams are higher rated.

The only ratings that ESPN is going to care about, is the Neilsen Ratings. And they are not going to pump up a game being shown on a rival network, if they have a reasonably big game on their own family of networks. They may very well end up at Oregon/MSU, because of the (presumed)Top 10 rankings of the teams, but it sure as hell isn't any lock. And there is plenty of reason to stage Gameday at the site of a game shown by their own family network.
