Fuck Michigan.
God I hate those bastards so much. Their stupid wing tipped helmets, their stupid fucking colors, their holier than thou fight song. Fuck Michigoon! Fuck 'em!
The whole state sucks, 'cept for the yoopers of course.
Fuck Michigan, gentlemen.
Fun fact: on this day in 1837 the first person uttered the phrase "Fuck Michigan."
It's 9:18.....
and Michigan still sucks.
Fun fact: on this day in 1837 the first person uttered the phrase "Fuck Michigan."
July 12: Fighting broke out on the border. The deputy sheriff of Monroe County, Joseph Wood, was commissioned to arrest Two Stickney of Toledo (son of Major Benjamin Stickney, younger brother of One Stickney; see above) for allegedly having resisted two Michigan officers by force. Two Stickney notified Wood that the day he set foot in Toledo his life would be in danger.
July 16: (Michigan's department of History, Arts, and Libraries says it was the 15th) The deputy sheriff attempted to carry out his commission. Stickney stabbed him in the left side with a dirk, saying: "Damn you, you have got it." Wood was taken to the nearest inn for treatment and subsequently recovered. Meanwhile fifty to seventy-five leading Toledo citizens, including Goodsell and McKay (former guests of Major Benjamin Stickney), gathered to pledge resistance against any further Michigan arrests, "as long as they have a drop of blood left."
Upon being informed of these developments, Mason immediately ordered the Monroe posse of about two hundred men into Toledo to arrest Two Stickney. When the Toledoans sighted the armed force, a large number fled across the Maumee River, some paddling their way to the other side on logs. Once safely out of the posse's reach, they gave vent to their anger by firing on the intruders. Fonts of type of the Toledo Gazette were "thrown into confusion."In the midst of this uproar Two Stickney escaped. The posse arrested three or four Ohio sympathizers, including McKay and Major Stickney. The Major, on the way to the Monroe jail, was forcibly held on a horse by having his legs tied under the animal's body.
Upon his escape, Two Stickney was in fact heard to say, "Fuck you, AND FUCK MICHIGAN!"
Fun fact : Two Stickney and his brother One, were sons of (Major) Benjamin Stickney, prominent citizen, who was the grandson of Benjamin Franklin. You want some (ill) legitimacy there?
Did not know that about the Stickneys, interesting. I will say that the Boy Governor, Stevens T Mason, had a point in his beef with Ohio. Shady dealings to take the Maumee strip. All is forgiven though; the UP was more than enough compensation.
That said, fuck Meechigan for dragging my beautiful state's name through the mud.
“the period from the 1790s to the early 1830s was probably the heaviest drinking era in the nation’s history.” Mean absolute alcohol intake frose from 5.8 gallons in 1790 (people aged 15 or older) to 7.1 gallons per year in 1810; it held at that level, “with minor fluctuations”, until “at least 1830.”
watching Hoke right now on BTN media day coverage...
this guy is so hard to listen to.

I disagree. I think it's a big game from a national perspective and that it does a lot for both programs. Both programs have had their downs in the 2000's, but I remember some of those games from the late 80's and early 90's when both programs were really good, and man some of those games were just epic. I flat out love playing ND, I love the game and I am upset it's going away.
The two winningest teams in CFB history in terms of total wins and win %. The WSJ did a study on college football fan bases, and ND & Mich were both in the top 3 in terms of largest nation wide fan bases. They are two top 5 programs all-time, and to me it's just a great, great match-up and a game that I really look forward to watching, win or lose.
Maybe ND does get a small boost in recruiting dropping Michigan for other scheduling opportunities. I have no idea. I just know that I hate not playing Notre Dame.

I think it is a rivalry, but I think it means more to Michigan today than it does to ND. For example, Michigan was preparing for ND last year two weeks before their game with Central Michigan, while Notre Dame treated it like every other game and didn't start preparing until the week of the game.
Was it a wise move on the Irish's part given the fact there probably was less to prepare for against Temple than Michigan? Yeah, probably, but for whatever reason I just think Notre Dame doesn't prepare for Michigan like they would or should as a tough rival, they don't get up for the game like they should. I think for his part Hoke does treat it like a big rivalry and puts a lot into the game. It would explain why Michigan has played well against OSU and Notre Dame, but in the following games against lesser opponents Michigan struggled.
Of course Hoke and Michigan care a lot about playing ND-- it's essentially the only game they play in a season where non big 10 fans care or notice.
Hey man, I think Michigan played Alabama in 2012 the week before we played ND, and the Ohio State game always gets pretty good ratings.
Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to see Michigan play more OOC games like Texas, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Oregon, etc., just not at the expense of ND. I don't see why you can't just drop some MAC snack for a real game. I really think the college football world will be moving to that with the power conferences forming and a push for a real playoff in the future. Hopefully the MAC snacks and FCS/D-II will be a thing of the past for the B1G and SEC.

True. But that's a rarity that they play games against Alabama or others of that ilk. That's why I said playing ND is essentially the only game.
I'm not being an asshole here, but honestly, people who live in Nashville that aren't from Michigan or Ohio have almost 0 care about those 2 teams playing. I can't prove it, but from anecdotal stories and conversations, it's like that in many, many other places as well. That's why I said non big 10 fans. Most ratings success that game gets I'd bet is mostly due to both those states being among the largest in population in the entire country, throwing in other big 10 fans, and huge alum numbers. By and large, people in the south, Texas, Oklahoma, and the west don't care all that much about Michigan and Ohio.

Michigan and Ohio State are two of the top 3 biggest programs in terms of national fan base. Notre Dame is the other. I've run into Michigan and Ohio fans just about everywhere that I've been. I think a lot of that has to do with the mass exodus of people from those states to the Southeast and West, also has to do with alumni base. Those schools have ginormous alumni base and it's spread all over the country.
Right. I somewhat alluded to that in my post. Their fan base (like almost all) is made up of people from that state, or alumni. Each state and school is among the largest in both regards.
But people who are born in Tennessee or Texas, separate from familial ties to the state and/or school, aren't growing up as fans of either of those schools.
So while people in Texas may be watching those teams play against other, those people amount to a minute number compared to the rest of the state. The average Texan doesn't give a shit about the game.

Oddly enough, I was born and raised in Tennessee, and always loved U of M. Most bars down here will carry the UM v osu game as their marquee game, and it's normally got a fair amount of interest from the UT fans.

I call bullshit, Clark. The atmosphere in our stadium is frequently (and unfortunately) compared to Wimbledon, and the Irish are legendary for welcoming rival fans and opposing teams. I don't doubt that Michigan players get a frostier reception than most, but there's no way these guys are getting flipped off by a significant number of people.
Maybe he saw me watching the game from my living room.
