That is just the "photographer" going crazy with his/her instagram filters.

False. Same green laid in alternating directions. Viewed from the other sideline, the dark and light would flip.

Got ya. I was more alluding to the previous discussion on whether the field was going to have this effect.

Looks like to the two five yard strips that the ND monogram is placed on are going the same direction, while all the other five yard strips are rotating opposite directions to give it the "mowed in different directions" look like others mentioned. Not sure if the two strips in the middle are unique or not but I like it!

I understand what you are saying, but........

modern era? Really? The University made a business decision to replace the sod that they were having to redo multiple times a year. It's not like ND has said, "To hell with doing things right, we'd rather win every game. That way our fans can feel better about themselves as they try to claim some kind of ridiculous superiority over their friends, coworkers, family, and acquaintances, who are fans of some other team."

If it helps with recruiting, that's great. But I don't think anyone should try to characterize this as some kind of fundamental shift in the University's values or priorities.

I think it was more than a business decision though, at least in terms of the field upkeep. We've departed from the days of power football for some time now. For about a decade we've ditched a focus on power running in favor of speedier athletes and pass oriented attacks. While one can certainly be successful playing on a field with poor traction in that kind of offense, it certainly can be detrimental when those speedy athletes can't get traction and are slipping like TJ did against Navy. If we were still running power football I'd say keep the grass, but times are changing. It doesn't just make sense from a business standpoint in terms of maintaining the field, it should help us against the lesser teams who may not have rosters as talented as ours.

While I agree that the University isn't sacrificing it's values or priorities, I think Swarbrick and Kelly have certainly changed the trajectory of the program. They realize it's important to hold onto traditions when we can, but at the same time it behooves us to make some concessions when it gives us a chance to become better: Field Turf, expanding the stadium and it's use throughout the entire calendar year, music in the stadium to liven up the crowd, training table, reducing the athlete's responsibilities in the 24 hours prior to a game...even the StaND (Yes, it's somewhat silly) initiative during the 2012 season was a pleasant departure from the "Sit down, I'm trying to enjoy the game!" mentality.

Is there anyone who's honestly still not a fan of the change to turf?

Looking at you Wizards, even though I know you've secretly moved from anti-turf to on board ;).

Thanks TP!

Thanks to both of you! Can we get a 50 yard line from the top looking down? And maybe a macro shot of the turf itself? And maybe could we have a picture taken with the alternating pieces of turf and some reference green so we can understand how it'll look on game days?

Thanks, no hurry. Make it less than an hour. Cheers.

I'm not so much anti-turf as I am pro-grass. I've given all my arguments and wish they had decided differently, but it is what it is. I don't think the artificial surface is an affront to the university or that Knute Rockne is rolling in his grave, I just prefer the old-school feel of grass and mud. This stuff looks nice and green and it's pretty in pictures but I'll miss images like this:
