Loy posted that ESB's dad told him at the opening that it was a USC/ND/Stanford battle and Stanford "just about out of the picture" and it was down to USC/ND.
So, Loy has a pretty good source.
With that being the case I tend to like our chances. He has always claimed to be an academics first kid with Stanford in the mix, so I think that puts as maybe a 55/45 favorite at this point. Hope the coaches make the push and finish out the WR part of the class with him.
It'll be a collection of guys. LaFleur is the West Coast guy, Denbrock will be in on it as well since he's the OC, but BK has apparently taken over ESB's recruitment himself.
All the GSR stuff is true as far as it goes. But recruiting is a sales job and USC is a good enough school that coaches can sell the academics with a straight face and kids/parents can allow themselves to be talked into it. The place may not be Stanford or Notre Dame, but it ain't Auburn or South Carolina either.
Either way, good to hear we're seriously in the hunt here. Would be great to land him. One case where I do feel like we'd be better off if we had a top-tier QB in the class though.
I think more important will be if we have a sexy offense on the field this year. Damn it, we better have a sexy offense on the field this year. If God himself wanted to invent an offense that was as boring as Diacos defense, he couldn't have done better than last year.
Met a Trinity League football official at BWW last night in Orange Co who said St. Brown is a lock for ND. He said he believes he would have announced with Waller had Waller chose ND (but Waller didn't wanna sit till his senior year).
He is looking at the locals out of respect. Really likes ND, always has.
He repeatedly compared him to Samardzija. I got all tingly each time he did.
A few other things from our chat...
He said he has heard that Lucier-South is a real possibility for the Irish but that he will need 30+ lbs and a redshirt before he's ready physically.
He spoke VERY highly about two OL PWO's from the conference, Bush and Killander (sp?). Said Bush has prototype OT size at 6-5, 300lbs and that Killander, although only a 6-1 (but 290lbs) OG is a monster. He was All Conference two years in a row. Killander decommited from a Cal full ride for PWO status in South Bend. He said he thought his Dad played at ND but was at least an alum. The name doesn't ring a bell from the 80's-90's for me.
I haven't fact checked any of this so take it for what it is... Two guys drinking Skulpin IPA's and talking ND-SC football. Yes, he was an SC fan, but the intel was good so I endured.
.
And one thing I forgot....
I was told that ESB's father was Mr. Universe back in the day. Sure enough...

So Pops might have his son looking more like Equanimeous St. Niklas by the time he gets to South Bend.

Good Lord, maybe we should be talking LB/DE with those genetics.
In all seriousness, ESB is elite, and I really hope he picks ND.

His Dad had more TO body than DE/LB body. His waist looks like a 29. ESB is slight too. Gotta have the frame to hang that muscle on.
It must be tough to be a slightly-built guy like his Dad. Hard to go outside without getting picked on. I would't know, guys look at my waist and back off.
can anyone provide quick update on where we are with him?

his mother has made it clear that she wants him to end up at Stanford.
Equanimeous St. Brown: Meet college football's most interesting recruit - College Football - SI.com
I recommend the entire article but for the short interesting recruiting tidbit:
He's a VERY bright kid. Has already taken the SAT in French and Spanish and reports are that Stanford has fallen out of good graces with him and he has flirted with Northwestern too. Sounds like the proverbial RKG talked about so often by the staff.
